PAST TENSE: A Zine Workshop (WI2015)

Guest Presenter: The Perch

The Perch exists as a creative platform for free learning through the process of connecting a variety of people to share and hear one another’s ideas and stories.

Past Tense is a community workshop in which participants will begin the day by exchanging stories over the course of several creative exercises. Perch Founders, Matt Austin and Jeff Austin, will introduce their views on education and the architecture of space and conversation. With the help of group discussions, jazz music, oral presentations, and time to write independently, participants will investigate prideful interests, passions, hurdles, and haters.

Shifting gears in the afternoon, participants will develop a zine utilizing their own narratives and written pieces from the morning session. Similar to a newspaper club, the class will divide up responsibilities, and work as a team to determine layout, materials, final copy, and binding. The culminating zine will be archived in the Spudnik Press Small Press Library and the Read/Write Library, and distributed to participants and local bookstores.
