During the pandemic\, and mass movements for revolution\, this exhibition asks: What kinds of physical and relational structures will we need\, or need to build\, in order to survive? How will the warmth and softness of our bodies guide us? \nIn Audre Lorde’s 1978 essay “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic As Power\,” she defines the erotic as “…a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Somatics for Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Blake Nemec\nThis workshop will use somatic (body-based) prompts as a portal into new ways of drawing. Somatics focuses on what lies beneath thoughts or emotions in our physical bodies and can be a powerful method for self-exploration and abstraction. Using words from some preliminary somatic exercises\, this session will help you translate sensory experiences into narrative imagery. Please come with items that you already use for making art\, some kind of raw food\, and an item from your bedroom. We will use abstraction as a visual prism that lets us translate and transform sensory observations into maps\, images\, storyboards\, and more. Whether you enjoy drawing\, writing\, or comics\, this workshop will playfully guide you from your present physical realities into new imaginings. \nBlake Nemec is a writer\, teacher\, sound recordist\, and community health care worker. He is the author of Sharing Plastic and ongoing articles supporting abolition and the decriminalization of unprotected bodies. \nSuggested Materials:\n\nAn item from your bedroom\nSome kind of raw food (i.e. fruit\, vegetable\, dried nuts)\nAny kind of writing and drawing materials\nA familiar creative tool\n\nOptional Materials:\n\nBig paper\nColorful drawing materials\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 932 6168 3227\n\nDrink & Draw [VIRTUAL] is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to staying creative from home.
