SUMMARY:Bred Box #1 Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Bred Press is an artist books\, comics\, and zine publishing house located in Chicago. Started by Brad Rohloff in 2014\, it provides a platform by which to support contemporary artists working within the medium of printed and published matter. \nBred Box #1 is a printed suite of work by comics artists invited and published by Bred Press. The inaugural release of Bred Box will have Abe Lampert\, Alabaster\, Andy Burkholder\, Ben Marcus\, Danielle Chenette\, Inés Estrada\, Michael Olivo\, Natali Koromoto\, and Nicole Ginelli all with new offset lithograph prints. \nBred Box comes in an edition of 150\, packaged in a screenprinted envelope and numbered. Bred Box #1 will be for sale at the opening as well as individual prints from the artists.

SUMMARY:The Wrong Story—Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Wrong Story is a solo exhibition of relief and silkscreen prints made while Aschman was Artist in Residence at Spudnik Press from March through May\, 2014\, and an accompanying stop-motion animation created from the printed works. Aschman employs symbolic motifs such as ropes\, braids\, ladders and hands\, which through intuitive association form a fractured narrative about moments of convergence and separation between individuals. She embraces incoherence and ambiguity to communicate the fragmented and uneasy experience of encountering another person’s reality. Limbs detach\, bodies open to reveal hidden objects\, peculiar figures gather among stepped archways\, hesitating to touch\, in an endless loop with no discernable climax or resolution. The Wrong Story wavers at the frayed edges of a narrative\, unraveling the artist’s desire for both connection and solitude.

SUMMARY:Recombinant Stare: a Stare Magazine Retrospective–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Recombinant Stare is an exhibition that pulls together strands from Kevin Riordan’s Stare Press\, particularly Stare Magazine\, a publication focusing on irreverent and arresting graphic art and writing that ran from1976-1991. The show consists of issues of the magazine as well as books\, posters\, press sheets\, photostats\, and photographs. It also brings together recent and selected publications and works by some of the many Stare contributors\, including Wayne Bertola\, Mike Brehm\, Elroy Christy\, Peter Hannan\, Bradley Lastname\, Jean Riordan and the late Fritz Wolfmeyer. The show will be accompanied by the publication of a printed book that is part catalog and part transgression against the encrypted order of cataloguing. Stare steps on toes and gets up your nose by throwing its flyweight around without leaving the ground. \nKevin Riordan is a lifelong Chicagoan and long time staff and faculty member of Columbia College Chicago. A former art museum security guard\, sock salesman and comic book production slave\, he attended 6 post secondary schools including vocational training at the Boys Club\, 1975\, in printing\, which he used to subvert American culture throughout the next few decades\, through the publication of Stare magazine and other seditious editions and exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Lucha Lives—Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lucha Lives is an exploration of the generational realities and mythologies experienced within immigrant communities\, particularly those of Mexican Americans in Chicago. Using the iconographic imagery of Lucha Libre\, artist Ricardo Serment pivots around the struggle\, mirth\, and quotidian by shining a spotlight on the spectacle that the everyday can be. \nRicardo Xavier Serment was born in Chicago to Mexican immigrant parents. In 2007\, he graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BFA\, concentrating in printmaking. He currently works in drawing\, relief printing\, and screen-printing; he also creates handmade books and portfolios. His inspiration draws from an array of collaboratives and movements including: the Taller de Gráfica Popular\, Japanese Ukiyo-e prints\, Contemporary American printmakers\, and the Mexican Muralism movement. \nLucha Lives is curated by Salvador Andrade Arévalo\, Studio Fellow

This year\, our public programs and events have grown to welcome over 2\,500 visitors through our doors. To continue this important work\, we hope to raise an unprecedented $10\,000 to support our expanding infrastructure. \nThe silent auction is the highlight of the benefit. SUMMARY:Fall Member Meeting: Field Trip to Platen Press Museum
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, our member meeting hits the road and we head to Zion\, Illinois! \nThe Platen Press Museum is the personal press and print paraphernalia collection of Paul Aken. With an entire room full floor to ceiling with miniature and toy presses\, a Gutenberg-stype screw press\, functioning linotype  and ludlow typograph machines\, and complete set of lead Chinese type\, this studio is a must see for the print enthusiast\, regardless of one’s experience as a letterpress printer. \nWe’ll convene at noon sharp and car pool to the suburbs. At 1pm we’ll get the grand tour of the Platen Press Museum from proprietor and print master himself\, Paul Aken. The caravan plans to return  to Spudnik Press by 4pm. \nThis event is for Spudnik Members only – the only catch is that there are a limited number of spots available so you must RSVP to info@spudnikpress.org no later than September 27th in order to guarantee your spot on this trip! \n

SUMMARY:CPG 5 Year Anniversary Exhibition + Horrifically Obvious—Double Reception
DESCRIPTION:In The Annex:\nEstablished in 2009\, the Chicago Printers Guild (CPG) supports and fosters the work of printers and seeks to bridge the gap between commercial printing and fine-art printmaking. \nThe CPG 5 Year Anniversary highlights the collaborative nature and collective ethos of the guild by presenting both individual collaborative works by members of the guild. As the CPG reaches a five year milestone\, we celebrates the exemplary work in print media being produced in Chicago and showcase the impact the guild has on its members and the Chicago printmaking community alike. New collaborative works are by featured artists Jaclyn Jacunski\, Kate McQuillen\, Matt Bodett\, Megan Sterling\, Justin Santora\, Zissou Tasseff-Elenkoff\, Todd Irwin\, and Maggie Marlin. Additional prints will be on display from the CPG Archive\, house by the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College. Additionally\, the exhibition will include a free takeaway designed by Troy Lehman and printed on Spudnik Press Cooperative’s newest equipment\, a Risograph 3700. \nThe CPG 5 Year Anniversary Opening Reception will be held Saturday October 18th\, 6-9pm and is a Featured Chicago Artist Month Event. In addition to the Annex at Spudnik Press\, the 1821 Hubbard Street Lofts are hosting their Fall Open House. Participating venues include Platform Studios\, Tsubo Salon and the private studios of Gerda Meyer Bernstein and Doug Fogelson. \nMore Details \nIn The Printshop:\nTate Foley’s new body of work\, Horrifically Obvious\, elaborates on the theme of duality and doubling\, a focal point of his studio practice. The series consists of individual prints and drawings hung side by side in pairs—a reference to the spread or gutter in a book. Foley utilizes the spread as a device to force previous unrelated pieces into relationship and dialogue. Each element\, informed by its counterpart forms a more complete whole. Yet even as we set out to discover and understand the connections between them\, Foley’s use of office supply hanging mechanisms (metallic tape and binder clips) and varied techniques (drawing\, risograph\, screen printing\, and digital printing) remind us the current status and the meaning of the work is in flux\, playfully subject to influence and change. \nMore Details

DESCRIPTION:Join our community as we share a selection of artists books and collaborative project produced at Spudnik Press. \nSpudnik Press Cooperative boasts a unique collection of book arts resources. We host traditional printing presses\, binding equipment\, unique processes like Risography\, classes\, workshops\, exhibitions\, and a library. The library emphasizes books\, both self-published and from micro-publishers\, that consider the printing process an integral part of the artwork. \nArtists Charlie Megna\, Veronica Siehl and April Sheridan will all be on hand to discuss their publications. The Perch will lead a book making tutorial and discuss their efforts to create free opportunities for artists to develop unique book-related projects. DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press Cooperative\, a community printshop and crossroads of enthusiastic driven artists\, is hosting their third annual holiday sale. This year the theme will be Prints from Paradise: A Holiday Shopping Getaway. On Friday December 5\, 2014\, Prints from Paradise will be showcasing items made by over 20 artists consisting of Spudnik Press members and local Chicago artists. Goods for sale will include handmade prints\, crafts\, cards and more. The Spudnik studios will be transformed into a tropical oasis. There will be a cash bar including tropical cocktails and a potluck provided by the artists—all set within a luscious green landscape. Prints from Paradise is a celebration of friends\, artists\, and the handmade. Proceeds directly benefit Spudnik Press and the featured local artists that create Chicago’s rich art community. SUMMARY:Double // Crossed–Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press Cooperative presents Double Crossed\, an exhibition of new works by Chicago-based artists Salvador Andrade Arévalo\, Kim Morski\, and Brad Rohloff completed during their 2014 Studio Fellowship at the print shop. Double-crossed hones in on the artists’ desire to poke and prod the perception of trickery\, be it slight misgivings or outright deception. Collectively\, they employ a wide range of printing techniques including etching\, relief\, screenprint\, letterpress\, risograph\, and offset lithography. \nSalvador Andrade Arevalo will display a series of etchings of phosphenes printed from a single plate\, reworked over time. His repeated attempts to capture the fleeting qualities of a visual phenomenon are documented across variations in each print\, in which the surface of the plate was changed or the color of the ink altered. \nKim Morski will present three new artist books that explore the duality of language and behavior. Varying in format in media\, each book’s content is related to secret biological weapons tests that began in the 1950s\, in which military-contracted scientists tested the dispersal of zinc cadmium sulfide in St. Louis\, Missouri. \nBrad Rohloff ‘s studio practice includes comics\, editions\, and drawing\, as well as printing the work of other artists via his Chicago-based publishing house\, Bred Press. Working with the multiple\, Rohloff will include editioned objects and prints that question the autonomy and authority of objects.

SUMMARY:CHASING POSADA: A Macabre Populist in the City–Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:19 printmakers have responded to the artwork and ideas of José Guadalupe Posada (1852 – 1913)\, a popular illustrator-printmaker who had a unique working relationship with the urban environment of Mexico City. Posada observed the city from the window of his street corner studio\, as he produced broadsides and periodicals to be circulated in the streets. In these\, Posada trafficked in a “macabre populism\,” giving his audience what they wanted—disasters\, freaks of nature\, social scandals and scenes of fantastical and everyday violence. It was a vision of an unstable and violent world but also an act of honoring the daily struggle of living. For this exhibition\, a group of artists have created limited edition prints and another group has contributed to a limited edition newsprint tabloid publication\, keeping in mind Posada and his presence in the city as a “macabre populist.” \nCHASING POSADA: A Macabre Populist in the City is a Rotland Press Exposition and is curated by Ryan Standfest. \nFeatured Artists:\nMarie-Pierre Brunel / Tom Carey / Stephen Cavanagh / Sue Coe / Bill Connors / D.B. DESCRIPTION:Ten x Ten 2015 kicks off Sunday\, February 8 with a free afternoon lecture\, Graphic Notation 101 featuring Jordan Martins and Katherine Young\, at Spudnik Press Cooperative. The artists and musicians of Ten x Ten 2015 will also be in attendance. \nSince the early 20th century\, artists have found inspiration in the pure abstraction of instrumental music. There has been a rich history of synaesthetic approaches to relating color to timbre and tonality in both scientific and highly subjective ways. More recently\, music notation incorporating graphic elements outside of the traditional staff have served as a way to travel the territory between improvisation\, chance operations\, and non-traditional composition while negotiating the balance between the interpretive power of the performer and the single-sourced autonomy of the composer. With the help of composer and bassoonist Katherine Young and visual artist and musician Jordan Martins\, Graphic Notation 101 will explore the history of some of these practices as well as underline the compositional and interpretive techniques as play.This is the first of four opportunities to experience the eight-month process of creating the next Ten x Ten. DESCRIPTION:Join our community as we investigate contemporary prints that tackle social and political issues. \nSpecial guest\, Instituto Gráfico de Chicago (IGC)\, will provide an overview of Latino printmaking\, sharing historical influences as well as contemporary artists and groups working in Chicago and internationally. IGC is a network of printers that preserves the art of printmaking by fostering solidarity amongst print artists. \nPrior to the conversation\, guests may meet local artist and IGC member\, Ricardo Xavier Serment. Ricardo will share his artwork and artistic process\, and original woodblocks used by the IGC to produce prints. In our print studio\, Spudnik members will be producing our signature line of shirts created from carved woodblocks. \nThis open house aligns with Chasing Posada! SUMMARY:Improvised Music Series: Ten x Ten Working Performance
DESCRIPTION:The long-running Improvised Music Series from Elastic Arts makes a guest appearance at Constellation as part of Ten x Ten 2015’s eight-month production pairing ten musicians with ten visual artists to create collaborative recordings and fine art prints. The Improvised Music Series: Working Performance is a rare opportunity for the public to witness the creative and collaborative process as it happens. Relying heavily on improvisation\, each musician-artist pair will workshop their ideas and experiment with how to translate ideas from sound to image\, and vice versa. Each musician will direct the ensemble as they develop their compositions. At the same time\, the audience will be able to watch projections of the artists visually responding and refining their designs in real time. \nTen x Ten is a collaborative project between visual artists and musicians under the curatorial guidance of three distinct Chicago organizations: Elastic Arts\, Homeroom\, and Spudnik Press. Now in it’s fourth iteration\, the project has expanded to include four innovative events. With Elastic Arts Foundation as guest curator\, the project highlights the genre of jazz and investigates how artists across media interpret improvisation. Curators Dave Rempis and Paul Giallorenzo have selected ten musicians to create an ensemble that will perform the new works commissioned through this project. Each musician will compose one track\, each created in partnership with a visual artist. Homeroom curator Colin Palombi has invited ten visual artists to design a corresponding 18” x 18” artwork that will be produced in an edition of ten hand printed serigraphs. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 28\, Spudnik Press Cooperative host an Artist Reception for two concurrent exhibitions: \nIn The Annex:\n Crush\, Gush: A solo exhibition\nA solo exhibition at Spudnik Press\nThe printing press is a tool that creates its product through extreme pressure. The works in this show cite materials that are also results of extreme pressure: namely\, oil and diamonds. Themes of crushing and erupting are depicted as natural\, yet violent\, processes that are tied to these valuable elements within the earth. \nBouncing light\, angled surfaces\, erupting forms and petroleum products are presented throughout the show in prints and printmaking materials. Tympan grease\, a facilitaing material for press operation\, becomes the markmaking material in images of erupting crude oil spindletops; in other pieces\, the crushing action of the printing press reworks images into fractured\, compressed surfaces. McQuillen considers the value we place in these materials that come from deep within the earth\, the human fascination with them\, and the extreme conditions under which they are produced. \nKate McQuillen is a Chicago-based artist working in print and installation\, and is represented by O’Born Contemporary. She has shown in Toronto\, Chicago\, Montreal\, and Boston\, and has works in public and private collections in Europe and North America. Writings about her work have been included in such news outlets as The Chicago Reader\, Time Out Chicago and Rabble.ca\, and in publications by Columbia College Chicago and Rutgers University. \n\nIn The Printshop:\n Sequestered Spaces\nNew Work by Adrienne Miller\nWithin the tradition of landscape art\, the term picturesque refers to a view where the human presence is apparent. Adrienne Miller uses this history to create print works that communicate an exploration of human psyche through constructed space. Open land represents possibilities while the more confined environments allow for Adrienne to communicate tension or anxieties that we encounter on a day to day basis – literally at times feeling as though the walls are moving in on us. Adrienne uses holes as absences or earth being dug up\, displaced\, or tunneled through to reference the retrieval and archival of memory. In her constructed world\, fences demarcate areas in this uncharted psychological territory. Through shifts in perspective and unrealistic coexistence\, Miller’s work encourages the viewer to address their own environments as well as themselves. \nAdrienne Miller\, a southerner by birth\, just survived her second year as an official corn-eating\, snow-shoveling\, midwestern resident. After graduating from Murray State University in 2007 with her BFA in Studio Art\, she found her way from Kentucky to Nashville as a summer intern for Hatch Show Print\, a world famous\, 130+ year old letterpress shop. She also spent time working as the Studio Manager and Gallery Coordinator for Vanderbilt University’s Department of Art.

SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: April 2014—Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:Gain inspiration from Kate McQuillen’s solo show\, Crush\, Gush on view in The Annex. Then\, with Kate’s guidance\, experiment with a variety of materials and approaching to creating non-representative art. Collage and layer abstractions to create unique artworks that push the boundaries of drawing. \nKate McQuillen is a Chicago-based artist working in print and installation\, and is represented by O’Born Contemporary. She has shown in Toronto\, Chicago\, Montreal\, and Boston\, and has works in public and private collections in Europe and North America. Writings about her work have been included in such news outlets as The Chicago Reader\, Time Out Chicago and Rabble.ca\, and in publications by Columbia College Chicago and Rutgers University. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key event devoted to drawing practices. There is no teacher and no pretensions. Spudnik provides a theme for the evening\, props\, and festive drink. Attendees provide a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and are encouraged to bring friends. Drawing nights take place the first Wednesday of every other month.

SUMMARY:Community Carving Kick-Off Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Push & Pull: A Streamroller Spectacular is a community based printmaking project that will culminate at Printers Ball 2015: Push & Pull on Saturday\, June 27\, 2015. Spudnik Press Cooperative\, in collaboration with William Estrada\, invites artists\, community organizations\, and art teachers to contribute over 300 hand-carved woodblocks. These contributed blocks will be printed onsite using a steamroller to create oversized collaborative banners. \nThe project aims to create a dialogue with multiple voices from various communities through the development of a large scale printmaking project that engages various community stakeholders to reflect how communities “push and pull” physically\, metaphorically\, and politically. \nCommunity Carving Events are opportunities throughout the city for participants to meet and carve together\, with guidance from an experience printmaker. The series of community carving events begins Saturday April 4\, 1-5pm at Spudnik Press Cooperative.Artists who signed up online to receive a block to carve independently are encouraged to pick up their block during this kick-off event. Additional dates and locations will be announced via www.printersball.org. \nAll carving events are free and open to the public.
