DESCRIPTION:Event Registration Online for The 2015 Hashbrown Chili Cook-Off powered by Eventbrite\n\nOnce a year\, a dozen unique contributors to Chicago’s innovative cultural landscape come together under Spudnik’s roof for food\, games\, celebration\, and healthy competition.\nThe Hashbrown brings a democratic “pay-it-forward” approach to fundraising. Organizations who place first through third each receive a cash prize. Spudnik Press Cooperative\, which presents The Hashbrown\, invites organizations that work in many different fields and neighborhoods. “Directly or indirectly\, these organizations support and contribute to each other’s missions. By working together\, we create a more vibrant city\,” says Angee Lennard\, Spudnik Press Founder and Executive Director. \nThis year’s competition\, taking place on February 28th at 6:00pm in the Hubbard Street Lofts\, invites back “2014 Best Chili” winner Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) to defend its title as well as Corner Farm\, who placed second. Other past chefs that are returning for another chance to take home the golden ladle are North Branch Projects and Homeroom Chicago. \nSeven organizations are competing for the first time. Latitude Chicago is a community digital media lab and is the newest tenant in the Hubbard Street Lofts houses Spudnik Press Cooperative and many other creative businesses. MAKE Magazine and The Perch both support the literary community through unique publishing projects. Another new competitor is The WasteShed\, a recently opened “upcyling” center in West Town. Eyeworks Animation Festival focuses on abstract animation and unconventional character animation and occurs every November. While many of the participants are relatively new organizations\, The Hashbrown also welcomes two well-established organizations known for their exhibitions and innovative programming: Chicago Art Department and Woman Made Gallery. \nGuests are able to taste as many chilis as they desire\, then vote for their favorite recipe. Admission starts at $10 and includes 4 tasting tickets. The VIP package is $22 and includes 5 tasting tickets\, a drink\, and entry in the drawing. The Royalty Package covers two VIP passes\, and a special edition tote bag for just $65! Tickets may be purchased at spudnikpress.org. \nNew in 2015\, The Hashbrown will include dessert tastings from area restaurants\, a drawing\, and printmaking-themed carnival games. SUMMARY:Double Opening: Crush\, Gush (Kate McQuillen) // Sequestered Spaces (Adrienne Miller)
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 28\, Spudnik Press Cooperative host an Artist Reception for two concurrent exhibitions: \nIn The Annex:\n Crush\, Gush: A solo exhibition\nA solo exhibition at Spudnik Press\nThe printing press is a tool that creates its product through extreme pressure. The works in this show cite materials that are also results of extreme pressure: namely\, oil and diamonds. Themes of crushing and erupting are depicted as natural\, yet violent\, processes that are tied to these valuable elements within the earth. \nBouncing light\, angled surfaces\, erupting forms and petroleum products are presented throughout the show in prints and printmaking materials. Tympan grease\, a facilitaing material for press operation\, becomes the markmaking material in images of erupting crude oil spindletops; in other pieces\, the crushing action of the printing press reworks images into fractured\, compressed surfaces. McQuillen considers the value we place in these materials that come from deep within the earth\, the human fascination with them\, and the extreme conditions under which they are produced. \nKate McQuillen is a Chicago-based artist working in print and installation\, and is represented by O’Born Contemporary. She has shown in Toronto\, Chicago\, Montreal\, and Boston\, and has works in public and private collections in Europe and North America. Writings about her work have been included in such news outlets as The Chicago Reader\, Time Out Chicago and Rabble.ca\, and in publications by Columbia College Chicago and Rutgers University. \n\nIn The Printshop:\n Sequestered Spaces\nNew Work by Adrienne Miller\nWithin the tradition of landscape art\, the term picturesque refers to a view where the human presence is apparent. Adrienne Miller uses this history to create print works that communicate an exploration of human psyche through constructed space. Open land represents possibilities while the more confined environments allow for Adrienne to communicate tension or anxieties that we encounter on a day to day basis – literally at times feeling as though the walls are moving in on us. Adrienne uses holes as absences or earth being dug up\, displaced\, or tunneled through to reference the retrieval and archival of memory. In her constructed world\, fences demarcate areas in this uncharted psychological territory. Through shifts in perspective and unrealistic coexistence\, Miller’s work encourages the viewer to address their own environments as well as themselves. \nAdrienne Miller\, a southerner by birth\, just survived her second year as an official corn-eating\, snow-shoveling\, midwestern resident. After graduating from Murray State University in 2007 with her BFA in Studio Art\, she found her way from Kentucky to Nashville as a summer intern for Hatch Show Print\, a world famous\, 130+ year old letterpress shop. She also spent time working as the Studio Manager and Gallery Coordinator for Vanderbilt University’s Department of Art.

SUMMARY:Community Carving Kick-Off Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Push & Pull: A Streamroller Spectacular is a community based printmaking project that will culminate at Printers Ball 2015: Push & Pull on Saturday\, June 27\, 2015. Spudnik Press Cooperative\, in collaboration with William Estrada\, invites artists\, community organizations\, and art teachers to contribute over 300 hand-carved woodblocks. These contributed blocks will be printed onsite using a steamroller to create oversized collaborative banners. \nThe project aims to create a dialogue with multiple voices from various communities through the development of a large scale printmaking project that engages various community stakeholders to reflect how communities “push and pull” physically\, metaphorically\, and politically. \nCommunity Carving Events are opportunities throughout the city for participants to meet and carve together\, with guidance from an experience printmaker. The series of community carving events begins Saturday April 4\, 1-5pm at Spudnik Press Cooperative.Artists who signed up online to receive a block to carve independently are encouraged to pick up their block during this kick-off event. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Free Comic Book Day with CAKE and Spudnik Press Cooperative. Join our drop-in workshop\, open to all people of all ages and identities\, and all experience levels. \nWant to make your own comics? Not sure where to start? Start off the workshop by making your own “Comics Handbook”. We’ll provide templates and drawing prompts\, a lavish selection of papers\, and our resident photocopier. Select the prompts that strike your fancy\, pick out papers that inspire you to draw and design your own cover. Then bring these elements together with a spiral binding\, staples\, or hand-sewn butterfly stitch\, and trim to any dimension you like with our fun and friendly electric guillotine. \nAttendees will also get to collaborate with friends and strangers to create a one-page jam comic\, using all sorts of mark making implements (pencil\, pens\, ink\, and more). Then learn how to reproduce this work using a Risograph machine\, one of the many unique tools housed at Spudnik Press Cooperative. Everyone who contributes will get to take home a limited-edition jam comic. \nThis is a drop-in\, all-ages donation-based workshop. No RSVP required.

SUMMARY:Push & Pull: Steamroller Spectacular–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:At times\, we pull in our community. At times we push out our ideas\, our visions\, and our inclinations. This summer\, Spudnik Press\, and artist William Estrada\, has brought together 200+ artists\, students\, and creative thinkers through various Chicago communities to reflect on how they and their communities “push and pull” physically\, metaphorically\, and politically. Each contributor hand carved a wood block\, with imagery inspired by the Push & Pull theme. These blocks were then brought together to create banner-sized collaborative prints as part of Printers Ball 2015. These oversized prints\, featuring art by as many as 84 artists\, are much too large for a typical printing press. Instead\, the pressure of a commercial steamroller was used to print each banner. These banners represent and pay tribute to the push and pull that is integral to a dynamic community. The culminating exhibition features a selection of the printed banners\, as well as select individual prints. \nOn Saturday\, July 25\, Spudnik Press will host an opening celebration with live printing\, a toast to the artists\, and the opportunity to purchase the commemorative banners as well as individual prints. \nThe exhibition runs through August 12th. SUMMARY:Ten x Ten 2015 Release Concert & Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 12\, 2015\, the Ten x Ten 2015 Collection will be released with a concert and exhibition at Elastic Arts. \nThe Ten x Ten 2015 Collection is the manifestation of a year-long collaboration involving ten unique partnerships between musicians and visual artists. Producing organizations Homeroom and Spudnik Press along with Guest Curator Elastic Arts highlight the Chicago free jazz community to investigate how artists across media interpret improvisation. \nEach of the 20 distinct contributors have explored their artistic practice in a cross-media collaboration with another artist in a series of live visual art and music performances including a Working Performance at Constellation and a live Recording Performance at Elastic Arts. Working within the genre of jazz and improvised music\, the musicians each composed and performed new work in collaboration with a visual artist. Working in tandem with their musician counterpart\, each visual artist developed a new screenprinted artwork. The final product of their collaboration is a limited edition LP and a full-color publication featuring each print\, statements by each artist/musician pair that illuminates their collaboration\, and a digital download link. \nTicket Options\nThe Ten x Ten 2015 Collection is $40 and includes admission to the September 12th release at Elastic (a total value of $55) or $50 for the Collection and two tickets to the release event. SUMMARY:The People's Pamphlets–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Pamphlets is a risograph edition of 25 tri-fold pamphlets by contemporary artists. Brochures are not thematically oriented\, rather they animate the interests of each individual artist in a wildly disparate\, fantastically in-cohesive manner. \nWhile digitally distributed media has fast usurped pen and paper as a means of communication\, certain public spaces remain deeply hospitable to the dynamism and efficacy of print media. Festivals\, welcome centers\, information kiosks\, transit depots\, shopping hubs and the like remain stocked with brochures\, bi-folds\, tri-folds\, pamphlets\, fliers\, and circulars—all free for the indiscriminate taking. \nAs a curatorial endeavor\, the People’s Pamphlets is situated within of history of the artist-brochure in the broader context of artists’ books and ephemera\, and considers the continued relevance of print within sites of spectacle\, tourism or travel – particularly as these spaces themselves continue to digitize. To that end\, the project also operates within the broader history of cultural “festivalism” which has deep roots in grand tours\, world’s fairs\, biennials and\, more recently\, trade expositions and art fairs. The name is a nod to the Chicago Cultural Center\, which was once coined the “People’s Palace” and remains central a destination for culture and…pamphlets. \nCurated by Jessica Cochran. We’ve arranged for a tour of the collection just for Spudnik Members! The staff at the Roger Brown Collection have been kind enough to extend a discounted rate ($5/person instead of the normal $15/ person) to our group. \nHaven’t Heard of the Roger Brown Study Collection? In their own words: \nHomes\, studios\, and collections sometimes overlap. The Roger Brown Study Collection (RBSC) is one such place. It is a house museum\, archive\, and one of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) special collections.  \nPreserved in SAIC alum Roger Brown’s (BFA 1968\, MFA 1970) former home and studio\, RBSC is filled with objects from the far corners of the world of thing-making. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist.

SUMMARY:Discipline and Distraction–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Discipline and Distraction is a body of work by Devin Owsley-Aquilia inspired by her transition into Chicago\, into isolation and a new understanding of what it means to be present. “To accept challenge and change\, I use material to guide myself through these mental obstacles to reach a place of poise and clarity. Layered images of abstracted landscapes derived from personal experiences\, place\, relationship\, behavior and interaction are inscribed into copper plates\, informing the basis of which my work manifests. The importance of line and act of carving speak to a growing dialogue between material and my person as well my emotional attachment to place.” The image transferred into a physical print serves as an artifact\, a portrayal of momentary consciousness that nurtured self-discipline and potential. \nDiscipline and Distraction will kick-off with a Gallery Talk with Devin Owsley-Aquilia at 6:00 p.m. on March 4\, followed by the Opening Reception. \nDiscipline and Distraction is one of three Residency Exhibitions\, a series of solo exhibitions that feature the 2015 Spudnik Press Resident Artists and the new work they each produced through the Spudnik Press Residency Program. \nDevin Owsley-Aquilia is a visual artist with great interests in printmaking\, drawing\, fibers and painting. Originally from Dayton\, Ohio\, she moved to Milwaukee to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where she received her BFA in printmaking  in 2015. Her work in print involves various abstracted representations of anatomical form\, material and growth that are used as personal symbols of progression and transition of identity. She has recently relocated to Chicago to further challenge her work in printmaking. \nThe exhibition runs through March 26th\, 2016. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5pm\, or by appointment. \n

DESCRIPTION:Calling Spudnik Members! Volunteers! Type Enthusiasts! Spudnik Press Cooperative is hosting the “Type Sort Party” of the century. \nJust what is a Type Sort Party? It’s a chance to hang out with fellow print people and help whip our letterpress area into shape. We’ve recently acquired a whole new type cabinet of lead type\, bags of unsorted spacing and brand new type still wrapped up in brown paper and twine. We have new california job cases to replace drawers that don’t fit in our cabinet. And after hosting dozens of classes and workshops\, more than a few drawers are a little out of sorts. Literally. \nMany hands make light work. This Type Sort Party will allow us to tidy up our supplies and pave the way for a letterpress studio that is more efficient and easier to use. \nWhy should you join the fun? First of all\, it is an opportunity to get to know fellow Spudnik friends and family. Second\, we need your help in making Spudnik the best it can be!Third\, we are making this the fanciest Type Sort Party be providing plenty of drinks and a smorgasbord of snacks! Finger foods and lead type don’t play well\, so we’re getting creative by making sure ALL of the snacks are on skewers! DESCRIPTION:Spatial Collage: Getting Wacky Wit It is an exercise in taking the collage format of assembling ephemera on paper – and transferring that practice to a larger-scale. “Spatial Collage” is an experiment rooted solely in self-expression and freedom\, while simultaneously toying with ideas of formal exhibition and product placement. \n\nSelf-empowerment is a main focus of Julia Arredondos work\, specifically in the realm of publications and zines. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: April 2016–April Showers\, May Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Usher in the spring with an evening of botanical drawing! Guest illustrator\, Keara McGraw\, will lead guests through various approaches to sketching and illustrating flowers and native plants. We will provide lots of fresh flora to look to for inspiration as well as pro tips for incorporating the best of scientific illustration with whimsical doodling. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.
