In addition to the access to our professional studio\, Residents will have the opportunity to meet with Artist and Director of Andrew Rafacz Gallery\, Emma Robbins during a guest studio visit\, and present their completed project during solo exhibitions during the spring of 2016. \nWe invite our students\, members\, and community at large to join Spudnik Press staff to help us congratulating Julia\, Devin\, and Lisa and kick-off the Fall Residency. Please join us on Wednesday\, September 2\, 5-7pm for an Open House. Guests will get to learn more about each resident and their artistic practices while enjoying light refreshments\, compliments of our studio.

SUMMARY:Ten x Ten 2015 Release Concert & Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 12\, 2015\, the Ten x Ten 2015 Collection will be released with a concert and exhibition at Elastic Arts. \nThe Ten x Ten 2015 Collection is the manifestation of a year-long collaboration involving ten unique partnerships between musicians and visual artists. Producing organizations Homeroom and Spudnik Press along with Guest Curator Elastic Arts highlight the Chicago free jazz community to investigate how artists across media interpret improvisation. \nEach of the 20 distinct contributors have explored their artistic practice in a cross-media collaboration with another artist in a series of live visual art and music performances including a Working Performance at Constellation and a live Recording Performance at Elastic Arts. Working within the genre of jazz and improvised music\, the musicians each composed and performed new work in collaboration with a visual artist. Working in tandem with their musician counterpart\, each visual artist developed a new screenprinted artwork. The final product of their collaboration is a limited edition LP and a full-color publication featuring each print\, statements by each artist/musician pair that illuminates their collaboration\, and a digital download link. \nTicket Options\nThe Ten x Ten 2015 Collection is $40 and includes admission to the September 12th release at Elastic (a total value of $55) or $50 for the Collection and two tickets to the release event. SUMMARY:The People's Pamphlets–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Pamphlets is a risograph edition of 25 tri-fold pamphlets by contemporary artists. Brochures are not thematically oriented\, rather they animate the interests of each individual artist in a wildly disparate\, fantastically in-cohesive manner. \nWhile digitally distributed media has fast usurped pen and paper as a means of communication\, certain public spaces remain deeply hospitable to the dynamism and efficacy of print media. Festivals\, welcome centers\, information kiosks\, transit depots\, shopping hubs and the like remain stocked with brochures\, bi-folds\, tri-folds\, pamphlets\, fliers\, and circulars—all free for the indiscriminate taking. \nAs a curatorial endeavor\, the People’s Pamphlets is situated within of history of the artist-brochure in the broader context of artists’ books and ephemera\, and considers the continued relevance of print within sites of spectacle\, tourism or travel – particularly as these spaces themselves continue to digitize. To that end\, the project also operates within the broader history of cultural “festivalism” which has deep roots in grand tours\, world’s fairs\, biennials and\, more recently\, trade expositions and art fairs. The name is a nod to the Chicago Cultural Center\, which was once coined the “People’s Palace” and remains central a destination for culture and…pamphlets. \nCurated by Jessica Cochran. DESCRIPTION:This November\, in lieu of a “traditional” member meeting\, Spudnik will be hosting a Member Meetup at the Roger Brown Study Collection. We’ve arranged for a tour of the collection just for Spudnik Members! The staff at the Roger Brown Collection have been kind enough to extend a discounted rate ($5/person instead of the normal $15/ person) to our group. \nHaven’t Heard of the Roger Brown Study Collection? In their own words: \nHomes\, studios\, and collections sometimes overlap. The Roger Brown Study Collection (RBSC) is one such place. It is a house museum\, archive\, and one of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) special collections.  \nPreserved in SAIC alum Roger Brown’s (BFA 1968\, MFA 1970) former home and studio\, RBSC is filled with objects from the far corners of the world of thing-making. You will find works by Chicago Imagists and nonmainstream artists\, folk and tribal art\, material and popular culture\, costumes\, furniture\, and things found wandering here and there as well as Brown’s Ford Mustang still parked in the garage. \nThere is a limited number of spots available as space in the collection is tight; so please RSVP to info@spudnikpress.org if you are interested in attending and we’ll add your name to the roster. SUMMARY:Discipline and Distraction–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Discipline and Distraction is a body of work by Devin Owsley-Aquilia inspired by her transition into Chicago\, into isolation and a new understanding of what it means to be present. “To accept challenge and change\, I use material to guide myself through these mental obstacles to reach a place of poise and clarity. Layered images of abstracted landscapes derived from personal experiences\, place\, relationship\, behavior and interaction are inscribed into copper plates\, informing the basis of which my work manifests. The importance of line and act of carving speak to a growing dialogue between material and my person as well my emotional attachment to place.” The image transferred into a physical print serves as an artifact\, a portrayal of momentary consciousness that nurtured self-discipline and potential. \nDiscipline and Distraction will kick-off with a Gallery Talk with Devin Owsley-Aquilia at 6:00 p.m. on March 4\, followed by the Opening Reception. \nDiscipline and Distraction is one of three Residency Exhibitions\, a series of solo exhibitions that feature the 2015 Spudnik Press Resident Artists and the new work they each produced through the Spudnik Press Residency Program. \nDevin Owsley-Aquilia is a visual artist with great interests in printmaking\, drawing\, fibers and painting. Originally from Dayton\, Ohio\, she moved to Milwaukee to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where she received her BFA in printmaking  in 2015. Her work in print involves various abstracted representations of anatomical form\, material and growth that are used as personal symbols of progression and transition of identity. She has recently relocated to Chicago to further challenge her work in printmaking. \nThe exhibition runs through March 26th\, 2016. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5pm\, or by appointment. \n

It’s a chance to hang out with fellow print people and help whip our letterpress area into shape. We’ve recently acquired a whole new type cabinet of lead type\, bags of unsorted spacing and brand new type still wrapped up in brown paper and twine. We have new california job cases to replace drawers that don’t fit in our cabinet. And after hosting dozens of classes and workshops\, more than a few drawers are a little out of sorts. Literally. \nMany hands make light work. This Type Sort Party will allow us to tidy up our supplies and pave the way for a letterpress studio that is more efficient and easier to use. \nWhy should you join the fun? First of all\, it is an opportunity to get to know fellow Spudnik friends and family. DESCRIPTION:Spatial Collage: Getting Wacky Wit It is an exercise in taking the collage format of assembling ephemera on paper – and transferring that practice to a larger-scale. “Spatial Collage” is an experiment rooted solely in self-expression and freedom\, while simultaneously toying with ideas of formal exhibition and product placement. \n\nSelf-empowerment is a main focus of Julia Arredondos work\, specifically in the realm of publications and zines. SUMMARY:New Demands?–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:New Demands? presents silk screened posters\, digital prints\, cloth banners\, and a neon sign inspired by historical demands of the American labor movement\, from approximately 1890 to the present. Drawing primarily on archival research into flyers\, posters\, placards\, and advertising produced by the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU)— historically the largest and most important union representing workers in the women’s apparel industry — this exhibition explores the struggle for better working conditions in the garment industry\, the winning of rights and benefits by the ILGWU\, and the eventual demise of the entire American textile industry. \nNew Demands? connects past and present struggles for workers’ rights\, and reminds us that there was a time when American workers fought for and won historical rights including the right to a regulated\, eight-hour work day and the 40-hour work week; vacation and overtime pay; collective bargaining rights and the right to freedom of association; and pension and health care benefits. These rights have been dramatically curtailed; since the 1980s\, hundreds of thousands of full-time\, well-paid\, unionized positions have been lost here in the US\, yet workers continue to fight for living wages\, better working conditions\, and the right to organize. This exhibition is part of a larger\, ongoing series of work under the title New Demands? initiated in 2011\, and incorporating public performances\, text based installations\, neon\, printed works\, and participatory workshops. \nNew Demands? will kick-off with a Gallery Talk with Lisa Vinebaum at 6:00 p.m. on May 6\, followed by the Opening Reception. \nNew Demands? is one the last of three Residency Exhibitions\, a series of solo exhibitions that feature the 2015 Spudnik Press Resident Artists and the new work they each produced through theSpudnik Press Residency Program. \nDr. Lisa Vinebaum is an interdisciplinary artist\, critical writer\, and educator. Her studio practice incorporates text-based installations and work with neon\, performance and site specific interventions\, textiles\, video\, photography and protest tactics. Current research and artistic investigations explore labor\, performance and collectivity in the larger context of economic globalization and cutbacks to workers’ rights. Lisa Vinebaum holds a PhD in Art from Goldsmiths\, University of London (UK); an MA in Textiles also from Goldsmiths\, and a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal. \nThe exhibition runs through May 28th\, 2016. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5pm\, or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Temporal Tantrum–Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The passage of time is a universal yet highly subjective experience that can be measured in countless ways. From time travel theory\, to poaching an egg\, to sleeping\, all have vast temporal implications. In art\, time is often addressed through the medium of film\, but how does one confront it in a static medium such as printmaking? Temporal Tantrum examines the concept of time and how time is perceived. \nThe exhibition features a print portfolio of the same name that include new artworks by ten Chicago artists. Each printmaker has examined the universal\, yet highly subjective\, experience that is the passage of time. Dana Johnson’s illustrative print depicts a missed opportunity\, waiting in anticipation\, and the let down or frustration of this experience through the typical urban experience of just missing a bus. Other contributions utilize time as a material in the art-making process. Stan Shellabarger began his print by repetitiously walking on a wood plank. Over time\, his footprints left grooves worn into the wood. Through the process of inking then printing from this block of wood\, Shellabarger was able to create a record of both this activity and a discrete unit of time. \nIn addition to the print portfolio\, the exhibition includes a series of etchings by Jeremy Lundquist\, Notice – Closed. Using only a single copper plate to create his entire body of work\, the plate itself has been transformed into a physical representation of memory. The prints created from that plate are a documentation of memory as an active entity. Through depicting fragments of historically significant landmarks\, Lundquist calls attention to how remembrance evolves\, and previously significant events become obfuscated\, buried\, or re-contextualized across time. Calling attention to the fickleness of memory and our susceptibility to the present and its affect on our perceptions of the past\, Lundquist’s 21 prints will not simultaneously be on view. Instead\, each of the 21 states of Notice – Closed will only be displayed for a limited time. SUMMARY:Finding Your Audience; Gaining Recognition
DESCRIPTION:A discussion of resources\, individual drive and what it means to be a part of the emerging artist scene in Chicago.\nIn the academic setting\, the classroom acts as a vehicle for constant critical discourse. On campus galleries provide students opportunities to exhibit artwork\, often in a “white cube” gallery space. Parameters are provided\, as are peers to attend the reception\, and professors to provide feedback. \nWhat happens when you leave the institutional bubble and continue to make artwork that should be seen? How do you find your audience within a city of roughly 2.7 million people? Who should you be reaching out to? How do you create opportunities for yourself? What are your available resources? \nWe’ve brought together three contributors to the Chicago art scene to take a close look at our city in particular. What are Chicago’s strengths within the “emerging artist” scene? What are Chicago’s weaknesses or challenges? There are many platforms for exhibition including apartment galleries\, coffee shops\, neighborhood festivals and local boutiques yet few direct avenues to gallery representation. How can artists navigate this unruly network of opportunities? How can artists best utilize continuing education\, professional development programs\, residencies and collaborations to further their career and their place in the Chicago artistic community? \nJoin Spudnik Studio Manager\, Nicolette Ross\, in conversation with Britt Skaathun\, MK Meador\, and Michael Ryan to investigate possible road maps for emerging artists to find their audience and gain recognition. \nPresenter Bios:\nBritt Skaathun is the cofounder of Open House Contemporary (OHC). OHC gallery focuses on young\, new\, and emerging talent whilst providing a unique opportunity to display artwork in an outstanding\, lofty space in the bustling neighborhood of Chicago’s River West. \nMK Meador is a writer and curator living in Chicago\, IL. \nMichael X. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: August 2016–Collage Night
DESCRIPTION:It’s Summer-summer-summer time\, and we invite you to join us for a night of doodling\, cutting & pasting\, layering and creating experimental “drawings” from magazine clippings\, photographs\, fabric scraps\, discarded print ephemera\, image transfers and much much more! \nMulti-media artist\, Emily Moorhead\, will lead guests through various approaches to assembling found material with handmade doodles on paper. We’ll stock the studio with mark-making and collage materials\, but guests are more than welcome to bring their favorite magazines and printed ephemera to cut up and share! \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

DESCRIPTION:Artists respond to the Whole Earth Catalog with various media and teach-ins.\nSpudnik Press Cooperative presents “Rules\, Tools\, and Fools\,” featuring Chicago-based artists ACT Collective\, Alberto Aguilar\, Jesse Malmed\, Jaclyn Jacunski\, Jason Pallas\, Ryan Thompson\, Hui-min Tsen\, and national artists Sarah Hotchkiss (San Francisco)\, Jen Smoose (Seattle)\, and Leah Wolff (New York). This exhibition will feature the artists’ various responses to a key piece of printmedia – the Whole Earth Catalog. \nWhole Earth Catalog is a counter-cultural touchstone that presaged many of today’s artistic and social modes of engagement. Rules\, Tools\, and Fools serves as a vehicle for artists to be provoked by and respond to the Whole Earth Catalog using a range of materials and conceptual strategies. The exhibiting artists all have a relationship with at least one of the themes explicitly embedded within the Catalog–alternative education\, off-the-grid living\, self-sufficiency\, do-it-yourself culture\, ecology\, utopian ideals\, communal action\, holism\, and access to tools.  All of the artists are crafting new responses and activities to the Catalog for the exhibition. \nThe show is presented in The Annex\, an educational and exhibition space within the non-profit printmaking studio\, Spudnik Press Cooperative. The show is not only a response to all that the Whole Earth Catalog embodies\, but is a visual manifestation of the role that Spudnik Press plays in the Chicago ecosystem. \nThe organization of Rules\, Tools\, and Fools mimics the strategies that drive Spudnik Press as a collectively managed and cooperatively run printshop.  The progressive ethics used to bring the artists together and create programming mirror the spirit of the Whole Earth Catalog.  This equitable effort puts trust in artists’ voices to shape how the show manifests.  Rather than a nostalgic revisiting of a bygone era\, the show offers poetic and practical solutions from our contemporary relationship to the Whole Earth’s problems. \nStay hungry\, stay foolish. \n\nThe Rules\, Tools\, and Fools Reading Library\n\nThe artists and exhibition organizers have collaborated to compile a selection of books and related ephemera to augment the exhibition with a reading library. This reading area\, currently on view at Spudnik and continuing  throughout the exhibition\, serves as a public resource for deeper investigations of the source material and other scholarly works.  As part of the opening reception\, a short artist talk will feature many of the participating artists discussing their practice and contributions to the exhibition and their reflections of the Whole Earth Catalog. There will also be additional programming associated with the exhibition\, including a film program hosted at The Nightingale\, and a series of teach-ins with community partners at Spudnik.  All events are free and open to the public. \nRules\, Tools\, and Fools is organized by participating artists Jaclyn Jacunski and Jason Pallas in collaboration with Angee Lennard\, Founder and Director of Spudnik Press. \n\n  \nRules\, Tools\, and Fools will kick-off with an Artist Talk featuring a panel of exhibiting artists at 6:15 p.m. on August 12\, followed by the Opening Reception. \nThe exhibition runs through September 24th\, 2016. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5pm\, or by appointment.
