This exhibition will feature the artists’ various responses to a key piece of printmedia – the Whole Earth Catalog. \nWhole Earth Catalog is a counter-cultural touchstone that presaged many of today’s artistic and social modes of engagement. Rules\, Tools\, and Fools serves as a vehicle for artists to be provoked by and respond to the Whole Earth Catalog using a range of materials and conceptual strategies. The exhibiting artists all have a relationship with at least one of the themes explicitly embedded within the Catalog–alternative education\, off-the-grid living\, self-sufficiency\, do-it-yourself culture\, ecology\, utopian ideals\, communal action\, holism\, and access to tools.  All of the artists are crafting new responses and activities to the Catalog for the exhibition. \nThe show is presented in The Annex\, an educational and exhibition space within the non-profit printmaking studio\, Spudnik Press Cooperative. The show is not only a response to all that the Whole Earth Catalog embodies\, but is a visual manifestation of the role that Spudnik Press plays in the Chicago ecosystem. \nThe organization of Rules\, Tools\, and Fools mimics the strategies that drive Spudnik Press as a collectively managed and cooperatively run printshop.  The progressive ethics used to bring the artists together and create programming mirror the spirit of the Whole Earth Catalog.  This equitable effort puts trust in artists’ voices to shape how the show manifests.  Rather than a nostalgic revisiting of a bygone era\, the show offers poetic and practical solutions from our contemporary relationship to the Whole Earth’s problems. \nStay hungry\, stay foolish. \n\nThe Rules\, Tools\, and Fools Reading Library\n\nThe artists and exhibition organizers have collaborated to compile a selection of books and related ephemera to augment the exhibition with a reading library. This reading area\, currently on view at Spudnik and continuing  throughout the exhibition\, serves as a public resource for deeper investigations of the source material and other scholarly works.  As part of the opening reception\, a short artist talk will feature many of the participating artists discussing their practice and contributions to the exhibition and their reflections of the Whole Earth Catalog. Moving to Chicago in 2005 he earned his MFA in Interdisciplinary Book & Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago in 2008. Stephen’s photographs and artists’ books have been exhibited internationally including at the Seoul Artist’ Book Fair\, Printworks Gallery in Chicago and the Kinsey Institute. His work is included in the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection and the University of Iowa Library Special Collection. As Director of Academic Initiatives at Columbia College Chicago\, his responsibilities included special projects including exhibitions of student work and conferences\, and is the advisor for the Art + Activism program and student organization. \nIn Stephen’s words: “Having spent thirty-four years as a freelance photographer\, during my eleven years living in Chicago I’ve become a huge fan of the environment\, facilities and the passionate support Spudnik offers.” \nBert Green\nBert Green has pursued a path that has focused on fine art marketing\, sales and curation\, with an emphasis on art’s role\, impact and interaction with trends in urban economic development and revitalization\, technology and culture. His gallery\, Bert Green Fine Art represents and exhibits emerging and mid-career artists. Her practice combines short stories and experimental comics with book design and printmaking. She is interested in narratives that reveal something more felt than understood.  Her work explores how little can be given to a reader while still establishing meaning. Alex received an M.F.A. in visual communication design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her B.A. in English literature from the University of Chicago. \nViraj Viral Mithani\nViraj Mithani is an interdisciplinary contemporary artist. His works derive from historic artistic cultures and worldly traditions. His practice floats between print\, painting and sculpture. Native of Mumbai\, India\, he began with a traditional background in the arts. He graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. He also holds a diploma degree from Chelsea Camberwell Wimbledon College of Art and Design (CCW) of University of Arts London (2012). Viraj Mithani currently works and resides in Chicago\, IL pursuing his art practice and teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nJake Saunders\nJake Saunders is a Chicago artist working in printmaking as well as drawing and painting. Hailing from Muncie\, Indiana\, Jake grew up with a love for a variety of narrative based art forms\, which became his focus in his art practice. After becoming fascinated with the unique aesthetics of woodcuts and etchings and their aptitude for seriality and multiplicity\, Jake earned a BFA and MA in printmaking from Ball State University and went on to earn his MFA at the University of Connecticut. Since then\, her artwork has responded to simliar little-known histories as well as broadly addressing the underlying themes of willful deception and complicit action. \nDoubling and duality is a central visual and conceptual device throughout all of the work. In Populace Mechanics\, doubles occur in the form of repeated symbols and motifs\, divided compositions\, as well as text or imagery with inferred double meaning. \nIn several prints\, insidious clouds billow in the background of isolated figures engaged in various kinds of work. A looming planet-like orb in one print echoes the crosshairs of a large\, white circled “X” from another. Bricks\, which appear in 2D and 3D form\, specifically refer to secret military testing done in St. Louis\, but they also represent a psychological burden. Join us for a night of art to celebrate all the pop culture references that we love\, and make some art based on your favorite shows\, memes\, movies and other assorted internet ephemera. We’ll provide the materials and guidance from talented (and hilariously quirky) artist Alicia Obermeyer; you provide your very specific sense of humor! \nAlicia Obermeyer is an artist living and working in Chicago. Her projects include one-off drawing zines and immersive installations investigating celebrity\, camp\, and femme iconography with a psychotic cartoon aesthetic. She exhibits in local small press expos with a collective of artists called “Pubes & ‘Tudes.” Recently she has released a collaborative drawing book with two other artists\, and is co-editing an anthology of drawings by regional femme freaks to debut at CAKE. She co-organizes a DIY art space called Learning Machine\, located in Bridgeport. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. The work explores the tension between physical distance and the closeness that technology can create; memory; and the scale of humanity. The prints are divided into two series. One details a sequence of a woman turning around. The other depicts planets and abstracted landscapes. The gallery becomes as a space for this two-part story to unfold. \nDuring recent travel\, Kostiw’s interest in immeasurable spaces shifted from metaphorical interior or mental spaces to physical ones. She was drawn to parallels between explorers in history who crossed oceans and the speculative exploration of other planets. She finds intrigue in the gut-wrenching contrast in size between the ocean or space and the individual\, as well as in exploration as an expression of\, and cause for\, longing. \nThroughout her practice\, Kostiw’s interest is as much in what a story presents as in what it does not—in what is not said or done\, as in what is. Why are printers so excited to get artists working in other media\, often very disparate from flat ink on paper\, to publish prints? What do artists get from the experience? Meet artists Kelly Kaczynski and Jeroen Nelemans in conversation with artist and printer\, Stan Shellabarger. Shellabarger has been working side-by-side with artists at Spudnik Press to produce new bodies of print-based art work. The discussion will be moderated by curator and arts writer Kristin Korolowicz. \nPresenter Bios\nKristin Korolowicz is an independent curator and writer. She has worked previously at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, the Bass Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. As the Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the MCA Chicago\, she curated solo exhibitions of commissioned works by Gaylen Gerber and José Lerma. Her current independent curatorial research interests include investigating multivalent forms of collaboration. In order to access a new set of contemporary notions related to sight and seeing\, he dissects the image as a physical entity. \nHis work has been exhibited at the MISSION gallery in Chicago; Aspect/Ratio gallery\, Chicago; the Fabric Workshop and Museum\, Philadelphia; the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Space\, Miami; the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Philadelphia; the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art\, Greece; Elmhurst Art Museum in Illinois; the Nice&Fit gallery\, Berlin and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts\, Grand Rapids. \nHis works has also been screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Miami; the Banff Center\, Canada; Gallery 400\, Chicago\, as well as the Werkleitz Centre for Media Art\, Halle\, Germany; the Magmart International Video Art Festival\, Napoli; the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival\, Ireland and the Kortfilm festival\, Copenhagen as well as the 25th Festival Les Instant Video in Marseille France. \n\nStan Shellabarger‘s performances\, works on paper\, prints and artist books employ alternative drawing methods\, addressing the body and the Earth to create minimal abstract objects. He takes everyday activities — walking and writing\, sometimes breathing —to extreme measures in endurance-based performance work. The repetition of the activity leads to massive accumulations of marks\, recording discrete units of time and space that amplify traces humans leave on the Earth; repetition is necessary so that these extremely subtle marks emerge as visible artistic interventions. \nStan Shellabarger has work in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago\, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, The Baltimore Museum of Art\, The Minneapolis Institute of Art\, The National Gallery of Canada and the Newark Public Library. His work has been written about in Art in America\, Artforum.com\, The Chicago Tribune\, Art in Print\, Chicago Magazine and ArtSlant. Twenty artists were each asked to produce new work in the form of a diptych that reflects their own current artistic practice in contrast with their earlier artistic aesthetics\, themes or processes. How does self-perception affect artistic creation? \nThis exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists from across the country\, many exhibiting for the first time in Chicago. Participants represent a broad range of artistic approaches and careers. This portfolio of prints utilizes many print processes including screenprinting\, lithography\, relief\, photographic processes\, and more. \nIn addition to the flat prints on paper\, the portfolio incorporates a decisive book arts component. Each portfolio is packaged with book binding supplies and instructions. Participating artist is charged with manipulating the prints to a unique drum leaf book\, each deciding how they prefer to sequence the images. This process highlights the role of personal interpretation\, narration\, and perspective. The “Where we have been\, before we go” exhibition features just one solution of how the book can be assembled. \nThe portfolio was organized in conjunction with the 2017 Southern Graphics International Conference in Atlanta\, Georgia.
