SUMMARY:Print like a Professional: Starting a Business
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for members of Spudnik Press only. If you are not currently a member please join or renew prior to registering for the workshop.\nThis twofold workshop begins with a focused panel discussion featuring three successful print-based entrepreneurs followed by each participant benefiting from an individual consultation with one of the panelists. \nThe panel discussion will investigate how each artist has defined the scope of their business\, who are their customers\, how they find clients\, and how they approach and balance risk taking\, artistic production\, marketing and self-promotion\, and the administrative side of being an entrepreneur. \nAfter the panel\, each presenter will meet one-on-one with participants. Participants can use this mini business consultations to simply practice their elevator speech\, ask about their specific concerns like setting up wholesale accounts\, or get feedback on their website and online presence. Each participant will have one 10-minute session with one of the presenters. \nLastly\, each panelist will bring along and share a useful resource to help manage their business (such as a budget analysis worksheet) to help participants apply what they learn to their own business ideas. \nOnline Enrollment:\n\nPresenter Bios:\nJenna Blazevich\, Vichcraft \nVichcraft is the independent and collaborative\, multi-disciplinary studio of Jenna Blazevich. \nWith a focus on visual storytelling\, she strives to craft and perfect charmingly unique brand experiences. Her agency experience has allowed for a portfolio ranging from small to large client projects. Vichcraft has a current focus on building small\, meaningful brands\, and partnering with their purpose-driven leaders to build an authentic visual identity. \nCombining hand craft processes and tactile mediums with a digital design skill-set\, Jenna strives to work right around the line between art and design to visually translate ideas. Her background in textiles and pattern-making continues to inform her approach as a graphic designer and feminist artist. \n\nJill Ruzicka\, Hello Paper \nHello Paper Co. is a design studio specializing in letterpress greeting cards and wedding invitations. Our cards are handprinted on 100% cotton paper using a vintage press. We create hand-made\, environmentally friendly paper products without the stuffy attitude. \nAll of our letterpress and foil stamped cards are designed\, hand-printed and assembled in Chicago\, IL. We use vintage presses and 100% pure cotton paper\, making each card a unique piece that is also tree free\, acid free and biodegradable. \n\nErin Chlaghmo\, Relativity Textiles \nErin Minckley Chlaghmo is an artist\, teacher and mother of two boys. Her passion for pattern led her to screen printing and fabric dyeing while studying in Chicago. After receiving her MFA in Fiber & Materials Studies\, she worked for a variety of fabricators and artists\, including a local wallpaper manufacturer. Learning how to set up an artwork in Illustrator for print production for many accomplished design houses\, Chlaghmo decided to branch out on her own and start her own label. It is through the process of learning textile design techniques and teaching them to others that Relativity’s philosophy was born.

DESCRIPTION:From William Shakespeare to Rembrandt\, countless artists of every discipline have used the simple dip-pen to create art that changed the world. We aren’t asking you to do that. We’re just asking you to come down and have some fun working with one of the most ubiquitous tools in the illustrator’s tool kit\, and see what you can create. Join guest artist Andrew Ghrist and practice drawing with a pen & nib\, crosshatching\, textures\, and mark-making variations.\n\n\n \n\n\nAndrew Ghrist is a Chicago based artist\, illustrator\, and printmaker with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work consists of equal parts fantastic organic illustration of nature and graphic elements created by the printmaking process. Andrew Ghrist’s prints\, and even more so his original drawings\, exhibit dedication to craftsmanship and detail\, transforming the work into artifacts of countless hours spent diligently crouched over an image.\n\n\n \n\n\nDrink and Draw is a low-key event devoted to drawing practices. There is no teacher and no pretensions. Spudnik provides a theme for the evening\, props\, and festive drink. You provide a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and come with friends! Drawing nights take place the first Wednesday of every other month.

Which leaves many artists lost on how to proactively pursue opportunities for gallery representation. In fact\, there are many ways in which the “gallery world” can seem shrouded in mystery to emerging artists. \nLuckily\, Spudnik Press members are invited to visit Document and meet with Founder and Director\, Aron Gent. After viewing the current exhibition\, participants will sit down for an open conversation to demystify the inner workings of galleries\, dealers\, and collectors. How can artists get (and prepare) for studio visits? What exactly does gallery representation entail? What does the relationship look like between a gallery and their artists? How important is it for artists to “network” at gallery openings? \nDrinks and snacks will be provided but\, but artists should bring their own questions. Space in this gallery discussion is limited. SUMMARY:Cassie Tompkins: A Revision of Everyday Life–Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:A Revision of Everyday Life is a series of screen-printed and dyed fabric monoprints that capture the splendor of quotidian life. Through an expression of geometric and abstract shapes\, these prints explore the emotional experience of color\, tensions between opposites\, and the nature of daily life. Tompkins’ technique merges industrial (screen-printing) and traditional (dyeing) craft to amplify the space between the exquisite and the drab. She strives to capture her wonder and appreciation of natural and manmade phenomena through material explorations. The flowing drape of the wall-mounted cotton panels\, inclusion of design elements\, and the imprecision of the processes speaks to her improvisational philosophy of making—work makes work—each step informs the next\, each panel inspires the following\, and if there is a plan it’s\, on the whole\, guesswork. The resultant imagery is bright and graphic\, inviting the viewer to take another look at their own surroundings— a revision of everyday life —through material and designed transformations. \nCassie Tompkins: A Revision of Everyday will kick-off with a Artist Talk at 6:00 p.m. on August 11th\, followed by the Opening Reception. The exhibition runs through September 30\, 2017. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5:00 p.m.\, or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for members of Spudnik Press only. If you are not currently a member please join or renew prior to registering for the workshop.\nThis twofold workshop begins with a focused panel discussion featuring representatives from Ox-bow\, Ragdale\, and Spudnik Press\, each representing their respective programs for artists. Following the group discussion\, each participant will have the opportunity for an individual proposal review with one of the panelists. \nThe panel discussion will first present the current landscape of opportunities for Chicago artists to find support to develop new bodies of work outside of academia. By looking more closely at the unique programs of each organization\, we’ll examine how the review and selection process varies between opportunities\, what types of artists and projects are sought out\, and the tacit criteria that jurors desire in applications. \nWe’ll also discuss how artists can ensure they get the most out of their experience as a resident\, fellow\, grantee\, etc. What does it take for an opportunity to not just support one project\, but to create more opportunities or initiate a pivot career shift? How have alumni benefits from being in the network of graduates? \nParticipants can then stick around to meet individually. For those who want specific feedback on a proposal (either universal or for a specific opportunity) should submit materials to angee@spudnikpress.org no later than August 13 for panelists to review in advance. General questions and impromptu review of materials are also welcome. Each participant will have have the opportunity for one 10-minute session with one of the presenters. \nLastly\, each panelist will bring along and share a resource their organization uses as part of their review process (such as juror guidelines)\, giving participants rare insight into what happens with their application after they click “submit”. \nOnline Enrollment:\n\nPresenter Bios:\nAmy Sinclair\, Grants and Admissions Manager\, Ragdale\nAmy Sinclair is a visual artist from Chicago with special interest in performance art\, books arts\, and fashion. She is Grants and Admissions Manager at the Ragdale Foundation. She graduated magna cum laude from DePaul University and joined the Ragdale staff in spring 2013. \n\nRebecca Parker\, Program Director\, Ox-bow\nRebecca Parker is interested in creating opportunities for artists to engage with communities that support and grow their practice. As Program Director at Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency\, she works with faculty\, visiting artists\, artists-in-residence\, and students to create programming that connects artists to the landscape of Ox-Bow as a site for experimentation and community. As an arts administrator\, she has worked in a number of capacities\, including commissioning public art\, working with university admissions and grants management. She received her Master of Fine Arts\, with a performance focus\, from the University of Connecticut\, and continues her practice as an artist. \n\nNicolette Ross\, Studio Manager\, Spudnik Press Cooperative\nNicolette is the Studio Manager for Spudnik Press Cooperative. She has long been a contributor to the Spudnik Press community. First joining our organization in 2012\, Nicolette has been an active member\, volunteer and teacher. In her staff role\, she manages the Fellowship Program and Exhibitions Programs. \nNicolette Ross holds a BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts from the University of Central Florida\, and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis.

SUMMARY:Drink & Draw October: Surrealist Doodle Jam with Logan Kruidenier
DESCRIPTION:Surrealist games are a great way to break habits\, generate ideas\, and make new friends while drawing. Our October Guest Artists\, Logan Kruidenier\, has been leading “Doodle Jams” throughout the city inspired by his practice of making quick drawings on post-it notes every morning. This practice has become an essential part of his day and has brought fresh ideas and new compositions to his art practice. \nBuild your own wacky narratives with the aid of surrealist exercises and a pad of post-it notes. Experiment with storytelling and composition by arranging (and rearranging) the post-its.  Break out of you normal routines\, enjoy a mid-week beverage\, and channel your inner Dalí! \nLogan Kruidenier is a multi-media artist who makes comics\, prints\, drawings\, and most recently\, public art installations and performances. Kruidenier uses narration to address themse of immersion\, identity\, and consumption. He recently completed a Bachelors in Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Printmaking at California State University\, Chico and spent a year abroad at the Kunsthochschule Mainz in Germany. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key event devoted to drawing practices. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw December 2017: Home for the Holidays | Architectural Drawing with Kate Lewis
DESCRIPTION:From the bowling alley where you had your 7th birthday party (complete with bumpers) to your high school stomping grounds\, your hometown is a limitless source of memories and inspiration. Tap into your youthful musings as we drink and draw our way down memory lane. We’ll provide pencils\, card stock\, and micron pens and you provide some nostalgic photos that take you back to snow days\, family traditions and early adventures. For those who look to Chicago as their hometown or source of pride\, we’ll have some images on hand of Chicago’s favorite landmarks.\nKate Lewis grew to love art through her passion for math. After studying accounting for years at the University of Florida\, she graduated with a BA in 2010\, and immediately decided to shift to the business of illustrating. To chronicle trips taken around the world while backpacking\, she found herself drawn towards buildings that best represented the experiences she was having and digesting in other cultures\, and things began to spiral from there. Using what she learned about calculated angles\, organization\, numbers\, and lines\, she felt like she was working the same part of her brain to draw as she was solving complicated equations\, so she ran with it and never looked back. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

SUMMARY:Chicago: A Cross-Town Exchange | Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Throughout Chicago’s history\, printmakers played an active role in the community as publishers and distributors. Local papers were printed and distributed as early as 1833. With easy access to freight lines\, numerous plants\, and a growing workforce\, Chicago rose to become a printing giant during the late 19th Century. At a time ruled by commercial printing\, many printers and publishers relocated south of the Loop into Printers Row\, also known as Printing House Row\, allowing them to expand into larger facilities and bringing them closer to the Dearborn Street train station. By 1960\, there were 2\,100 printing establishments in the city\, including the world’s three largest at the time. \nBut as use of automation and digital technology changed the face of commercial printing\, a new group of Chicago printers emerged. Independent\, artist-run shops\, including Landfall Press and Plucked Chicken Press opened in the 1970s. Since then\, and no longer centralized in Printers Row\, many print shops sprouted throughout the city and continue to engage the community through the creation of art that embraces socially engaged themes and/or by addressing a wide range of commercial needs. \nChicago: A Cross-Town Exchange is an exhibition that features a print portfolio of the same name\, bringing together 26 artists/collectives from numerous print shops and studios across the city and surrounding neighborhoods. While this is a small sampling of the city’s thriving printmaking community\, it is demonstrative of Chicago’s collaborative spirit and the many spaces that allow for the creation of printed work. DESCRIPTION:Are you tired of the way Valentine’s Day sugarcoats our relationships? Sometimes our relationships (and life in general) can be a bit barbaric\, awkward\, unassuming\, or crude. Our portrait-themed Drink & Draw embraces drawing as a way to capture a simple\, honest\, authentic\, whimsical\, and unfiltered impression of those we love. \nGrab a photo of a person or creature you really really really like (a crush\, a lover\, a life partner\, a furry friend\, your childhood hermit crab\, a personal hero\, your best bud). Immortalize their face in a collection of candid doodles. \nGuest illustrator and humorist\, Grace Makuch\, will guide our guests through fun projects that co-opt office supplies (Sharpies and index cards) to create simple little portraits that are perfect to send as a valentine\, a postcard\, or secret note. \nGrace Makuch is an artist\, printmaker\, and genius living in Chicago\, Illinois. She is interested in the intersection of two-dimensional art and comedy\, and her work often reflects themes of humor and sadness. Makuch is an alumni of the Spudnik Press Studio Fellowship Program and has experience working in various printmaking techniques. \n\nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. SUMMARY:Roots | Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of Roots\, a solo exhibition featuring new work by artist Yasaman Moussavi. \nThe visual content of the Moussavi’s work for this exhibition is personal and intimate\, consisting of etchings that depict creatures entangled in a natural space. As she explores the ties between individual and environment\, she begins to unearth emotions\, associations\, and memories that one attaches to physical spaces to discover the abiding bond between nature and us. \nFor Moussavi\, etching is a dance of covering and uncovering\, building and destroying whatever she imagines onto her copper plates. In this sense\, printmaking bridges her inner and external worlds. Moussavi also crafts an intimate relationship between her medium of choice and the visual message she wants to communicate by making her own paper. Upon layering and reconstructing handmade papers\, she fuses the intricate forms found in her etchings with dynamic natural forms. \nAt a time in history when we suffer from great divisive rhetoric and disconnect in and with politics\, the environment and each other\, Moussavi dreams of growing roots and connecting with the self\, nature\, and people. \nYasaman Moussavi was born in Tehran\, Iran and received her BFA in painting from the Al-Zahra University of Tehran and an MA in Art Studies from The University of Tehran. She also holds an MFA with an emphasis in painting and printmaking from Texas Tech University\, where she explored and developed her skills in papermaking\, printmaking and installation art. Moussavi has participated in many national and international exhibitions\, including the Juried International Exhibition of Contemporary Art\, Irving Art center\, TX\, A.I.R Gallery Biennial\, Brooklyn\, NY\, “Norouzaneh” International Mini Print Annual Exhibition at Sagene Kunstsmie\, Oslo\, Spazio 74/b Milan and Chicago. \nRoots will be on view at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. For more information\, visit booklyn.org. \n\nMarshall Weber\, b. 1960\, Syosset\, New York\, lives in Brooklyn\, NY. Weber received his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1981\, and in 1983 co-founded Artists Television Access in San Francisco\, one of the longest (still) running alternative media art centers in the US. In 1999 he co-founded Booklyn\, an artists run NGO that distributes artworks and programming that furthers social justice causes. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our April Drink & Draw as we take some of the stress out of observational drawing by using taxidermy animals as a point of departure. Our guest artist is Lauren Levato Coyne\, known for her fairytale-like drawings that combine simple figurative line renderings with lush illustrations of creatures. She will lead light-hearted drawing activities inspired by her own artistic practice and interest in blurring reality and non-reality. We’ll provide an array of still life props\, including taxidermy specimen\, for inspiration. By adding a bit of surrealism and magical flare\, our Drink & Draw guests will be able to create their own mystical creatures! \nLauren Levato Coyne is a Chicago-based artist and writer. She was trained at the School of Representational Art in Chicago and studied privately with Steven Assael in NYC. Levato Coyne also holds a degree in Professional Writing from Purdue University and another in Political Journalism from Georgetown University. She regularly contributes art essays and has published several collections of poetry\, and is represented by Aron Packer Projects in Chicago. \nSpudnik Press would like to extend a special thank you to member Robert Kelsey and to our friends at Woolly Mammoth Antiques & Oddities for lending us some of their specimen for this drawing session. DESCRIPTION:Please join artist Yasaman Moussavi during the final gallery hours of her solo exhibition Roots at Spudnik Press Cooperative and her culminating public program as our 2017 Resident Artist. \nMoussavi’s personal and intimate artwork consists of etchings and handmade paper. Through the process of layering and reconstructing handmade papers\, she fuses the intricate and arresting forms found in her etchings with dynamic natural forms. Her work explores the ties between individual and environment\, unearthing emotions\, associations\, and memories that one attaches to physical spaces to discover the abiding bond between nature and us. \nThroughout the afternoon\, Moussavi will be demonstrating the process she has developed to make her handmade paper. SUMMARY:Entre Rios y Montañas | Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of Entre Rios y Montañas (Between Rivers and Mountains)\, a solo exhibition featuring new work by Chicago-based artist Jonathan Herrera. \nThe work featured in Entre Rios y Montañas stems from Herrera’s deep interest and continued investigation of the relationships between collective memory and historical instances of state-sponsored violence and trauma inflicted on politicized bodies. Often the victims of these crimes\, or rather their bodies that disappear\, leave behind stories not in words but in gesture. Trails of clothing are found in the deserts between borders as they get stuck on fences with barbed wire or wash up onto shores of beaches. These garments are sometimes attached to lifeless bodies while others manage to claim autonomy from the flesh. \nThrough these collographs\, akin to rubbings\, Herrera explores the connection between clothing and the body\, as well as the relationship between forensic evidence and items of personal significance. By employing this print-based process\, Herrera partakes in an act of remembrance as he produces tracings and impression of clothing left behind. His harsh\, and almost violent\, treatment of the objects carries forth into the artwork’s final presentation. Ultimately\, the objects of clothing rendered in Herrera’s work are declarations unto themselves\, left behind by bodies to evoke lived experiences. \nJonathan Herrera is a print-based studio artist and teacher from Chicago\, IL. He holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College in Art and Design. Through his studio practice and teaching philosophy\, Herrera engages multiple facets of place-making and thinking in order to express ideas through concept building\, process\, and materials. He constantly works to create accessibility in both art and education by connecting his studio work\, public work\, and community engagement. Herrera has recently exhibited work at the Minnesota Museum of American Art\, The Soap Factory (Minneapolis\, MN)\, and Concordia Gallery (St. Paul\, MN). \nEntre Rios y Montañas will be on view at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. DESCRIPTION:2:00     Pop-Up Exhibition\n2:00     Layers & Shapes: Communal Pattern Making Workshop\n2:00     Assembled Parts: Collaborative Relief Printmaking\n5:00     1/1: Print Politics and the Monoprint Panel Discussion\nCome take part in a day of communal printmaking presented by our 2017/2018 Studio Fellows\, Molly Berkson\, Ben Garbus\, Brendan Robson\, and Cristina Umaña. \nAs a culminating aspect of their 7-month Fellowship\, these artists have collaborated to design and present a robust day of programming that invites our community to see\, make\, and talk about artwork.  Spudnik Press Community Day is also a day to celebrate the artwork and accomplishments of these four emerging artist. \nSpudnik Community Day will fully activate out studios and include two collaborative drop-in workshops\, a pop-up exhibition\,  and a panel discussion. All of these activities focus on communal printmaking practices and the intersection of various processes and motives within the umbrella of printmaking. \nWith a focus on screenprinting and relief printing\, guests will learn introductory printmaking processes through making their own prints and contributing to the creation of a collaborative group monoprint. The evening will culminate with a panel discussion exploring monoprints and ideas surrounding the political and social implications of this type of printmaking as an art form. \n\n1/1: Print Politics and the Monoprint is a panel discussion with Chicago-based artists on the topic of monoprints and the political consciousness surrounding this form of printmaking. Unlike other types of printmaking\, an image produced through monoprinting can only be made once. Using this as a point of departure for our conversation\, we will address why some artists are choosing more and more to create prints of this nature and whether it’s a commercial trend or a political statement\, or else something new altogether.  \nAbout the Panelists: \nJessica Christy is a printmaker\, designer\, and North Dakota native living in the Chicago area. She received her MFA from the University of North Dakota in 2011 and has since created works that challenge the status quo of human activity and the resulting impacts. Heavily influenced by her upbringing in the Dakota culture\, Christy often weaves the Native experience into her pieces. Her work has shown both nationally and internationally\, most recently at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. \nJordan Martins received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador\, Brazil in 2007\, and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and North Park University. He is the executive director of Comfort Station\, a multi-disciplinary art space. Martins’s visual work is based in collage processes\, including mixed media two dimensional work\, photography\, video and installation\, and he has exhibited nationally and internationally. He is co-director of the Perto da Lá\, a biennial multidisplinary art event with international artists in Salvador\, Brazil. From 2014 to 2016 he served on the programming committee for the Chicago Jazz Festival. He was a resident in the Chicago Artists Coalition’s HATCH program in 2013\, a mentor for their LAUNCH program in 2016 and 2017\, and currently serves on their Educational Advisory Panel.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of States of I: A Conversation with featured visiting artists Mary Jones and Jolynn Reigeluth. \nJones and Reigeluth are artists that live and work in states of “I;” respectively\, Indianola\, Iowa and Indianapolis\, Indiana. In addition to living in states that start with the same letter\, these printmakers have a penchant for building images from a central persona who is at best an unreliable narrator\, caught and fraught in a landscape of self. \n\nIn their work\, both artists celebrate the absurdity of being human by bringing to light those untold internal monologues. These autobiographical works by Jones and Reigeluth exemplify their shared interests in narrative imagery\, as well as a love for the graphic legacy and energy coming out of Chicago\, Illinois. For this exhibition\, Jones and Reigeluth will contribute two bodies of work that culminate in a conversation with a set of two prints – one from each artist – that correspond in size and title. \nStates of I: A Conversation will be on view through August 11\, 2018 at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.
