DESCRIPTION:What is a recent or memorable dream you’ve had? What would it look like if you drew it? What do animals dream about? How can you put to paper your abstract thoughts and surreal ideas? \nWe invite you to explore your wildest dreams at our June Drink & Draw! Using found imagery\, a variety of art utensils and mark making techniques\, guest artist Vanessa Sanchez will guide us through fun and thoughtful drawing exercises that will explore creative approaches to depicting some of our weirdest dreams and imaginative ideas! \nVanessa Ann Sanchez received her BFA in Painting at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently the Director of Yollocalli Arts Reach\, a member of Instituto Grafico de Chicago\, and is one of the lead organizers for Villapalooza\, the Little Village Music Fest. Her recent work of zines\, prints and paintings have focused on feminism\, magic realism\, and motherhood. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. SUMMARY:States of I: A Conversation | Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of States of I: A Conversation with featured visiting artists Mary Jones and Jolynn Reigeluth. \nJones and Reigeluth are artists that live and work in states of “I;” respectively\, Indianola\, Iowa and Indianapolis\, Indiana. In addition to living in states that start with the same letter\, these printmakers have a penchant for building images from a central persona who is at best an unreliable narrator\, caught and fraught in a landscape of self. \n\nIn their work\, both artists celebrate the absurdity of being human by bringing to light those untold internal monologues. These autobiographical works by Jones and Reigeluth exemplify their shared interests in narrative imagery\, as well as a love for the graphic legacy and energy coming out of Chicago\, Illinois. For this exhibition\, Jones and Reigeluth will contribute two bodies of work that culminate in a conversation with a set of two prints – one from each artist – that correspond in size and title. \nStates of I: A Conversation will be on view through August 11\, 2018 at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. Hubbard Street\, Suite 302\, Chicago\, IL 60622. \nStates of I: A Conversation will kick-off with a Artist Talk at 6:15 p.m. on June 15th\, followed by the Opening Reception. The exhibition runs through August 11\, 2018. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5:00 p.m.\, or by appointment. If so\, stop by our August Drink & Draw to learn some fun approaches to designing your own unique patterns\, as elegant\, devious\, or wacky as you desire. \nGuest artist\, Orr Gidon\, will guide us through a collaborative approach to pattern making inspired by M.C. Escher’s tessellations. Learn how to weave basic shapes and lines into a rich tapestry of marks and textures that captures everyone’s style\, be it floral\, squiggly\, or geometric. If you fall in love with your design\, perhaps you can return to Spudnik to turn it into curtains or gift wrap! \nOrr Gidon is a freelance artist\, designer\, and fabricator living and working in Chicago. Their design work emphasizes principles of ergonomics\, multi-functionality\, and sustainability with a sculptural approach. In their 2D work\, Gidon is stimulated by pattern\, repetition of line\, and shape to create visual movements and optical illusions. Within their 3D practice\, Gidon explores concepts of change and movement through processes of material manipulation\, employing wood\, metal\, and glass. SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Hull | Featuring Tim Daisy and Katinka Kleijn
DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press Cooperative\, together with Fulton Street Collective\, are pleased to present An Evening with Richard Hull\, Featuring Tim Daisy and Katinka Kleijn. This special concert and print release event are organized on the occasion of a newly published limited edition of prints by esteemed artist Richard Hull\, produced by Spudnik Press Cooperative. \nAs part of the invitational Fine Art Editions Program at Spudnik Press\, Hull created a sugar-lift aquatint intaglio print. The work is comprised of concentric circles and loops\, carefully arranged on top of one another and accentuated by repetitive forms to give rise to a harmonious potrait-like structure\, titled “Spud”. \nA longtime fan of jazz improvisation\, Hull’s lyrical artwork\, including selections from his recent exhibition at Western Exhibitions\, will be featured alongside a rare musical performance by Chicago-based percussionist and composer Tim Daisy and reknown Dutch cellist Katinka Kleijn. Distinguished for their contributions to the field of improvised music\, Daisy and Kleijn will delight our audience with a spontaneous composition in response to Hull’s work\, as well as share a few personal anecdotes about their cross-disciplinary collaboration —all in the intimate environment of Fulton Street Collective’s space. \nAbout the Artists:  \nTim Daisy is a percussionist and composer working in the fields of improvised and composed music. He has performed and recorded original music for modern dance\, sound installations\, film\, and improvised music ensembles of various configurations since 1997. Daisy owns and operates Relay Records and also helps curate the weekly OPTION series at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. \nRichard Hull is an accomplished artist with paintings\, drawings and prints in numerous private collections. He has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; Nelson-Atkins Museum\, Kansas City; the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art\, Ridgefield\, CT; Contemporary Art Center\, Cincinnati\, OH; Portland Art Museum\, OR; the Cleveland Institute of Art\, Cleveland\, OH; and the Painting Center\, New York\, NY to name a few. Richard Hull is represented by Western Exhibitions\, Chicago. \nKatinka Kleijn defies today’s traditional definition of a cellist\, transitioning comfortably through the styles of classical\, experimental\, contemporary\, improvisatory\, folk and progressive rock\, as well as across the traditional fields of solo\, chamber and orchestral performance. SUMMARY:In Conversation with Carris Adams
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this summer\, we had the great and distinct pleasure of welcoming Chicago-based artist Carris Adams for a three-week residency at Spudnik Press Cooperative. During her time spent with us\, Adams developed a new edition of prints based on a series of paintings inspired by signage found in the landscape that exists in multiples. This body of work stems from the artist’s investigation of visual markers of “domesticated space” (i.e. roads\, residential structures\, commercial structures\, government buildings\, cemeteries\, advertisements\, etc.) and the relational threads between ownership in marginalized spaces\, politics\, class\, histories\, celebration\, and resilience. \nOn August 30\, 2018\, join us for an intimate gathering as we welcome Carris Adams back for a conversation about what drives her itinerant tendencies and unsettled curiosity in her art practice and how printmaking allowed her to further some if the ideas and aesthetic choices in her work\, which up until recently was unchartered territory for this painter and drawer. \nA casual reception is to follow\, featuring a temporary installation of Adams’ prints created during her residency displayed alongside the paintings that inspired them. This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artist: \nCarris Adams is a visual artist whose practice visually investigates markers of “domesticated space”. The conceptually multi-layered works seek to inform and position viewers to recognize their assumptions\, recall an experience and perhaps note how societal markers materialize in the landscape. Adams received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin (2013) and her MFA from the University of Chicago (2015). SUMMARY:Now More Than Ever | Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of Now More Than Ever\, a solo exhibition featuring work by Emmy Lingscheit. \n\nIn Now More Than Ever\, artist Emmy Lingscheit invites us to think about the idea and aesthetics of salvaging hope\, shelter\, and community out of repression\, division\, and catastrophe caused by rapid environmental change. Her prints offer a critique of entrenched systems and attitudes that contribute to environmental damage\, amplifying social and economic inequality in the process. \nCreated specifically for this exhibition\, and in addition to her framed work\, Lingscheit hones in on the idea of a natural world out of balance through large-scale relief prints. These pieces are designed to yield prints that align edge-to-edge\, repeating infinitely and building up to a visually overwhelming abundance that is both breathtaking and grotesque. Among the specimen featured in these large-scale prints are oyster mushrooms and a bloom of jellyfish\, both of which may seem alien to us\, but are situated to inherit the earth as we change it. \nNow More Than Ever will be on view through December 29\, 2018 at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. Learn of different approaches and techniques to distribute your work from experienced printmakers\, and discuss the methods professionals use to attract collectors and develop audiences for printmaking in Chicago and beyond. \nAbout the Panelists and Moderator:\nBen Blount | Artist\, Designer\, Printmaker\nBen Blount was born and raised in Detroit. He is a designer and letterpress printer that loves type and putting ink on paper. Sometimes he turns what he prints into books. His work explores questions and race and identity and the stories we tell ourselves about living in America. Truth tellers and rabbler rousers in all areas of popular culture inspire his work—from Dave Chapelle and Kara Walker to Mos Def and Amos Kennedy. \nDeborah Maris Lader | Director\, Chicago Printmakers Collaborative\nDeborah Maris Lader is the Founder and Director of the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative since 1989\, and member of the touring Altfolk band\, Sons of the Never Wrong. Deborah exhibits her prints\, drawings\, photography\, and mixed media artwork internationally\, and her work appears in many permanent collections. What better way to wrap up the year than surrounded by friends in the comfort of Spudnik’s studio\, with a drink or hot cocoa in hand\, while crafting your new year’s resolutions for 2019?! Join guest artist Jenna Blazevich as she helps you transform your resolutions into hand-lettered\, visual works of art that you can display in your home or workspace all year round! \nIn addition to showing you some hand lettering tips and techniques\, Jenna will also demonstrate how to include illustrations and doodles into your design. We’ll have an assortment of drawing utensils for you to dabble with\, such as markers\, brushes\, ink\, but also feel free to bring your own favorite materials. \nChicago-based artist Jenna Blazevich is the founder and designer behind the independent and collaborative\, multi-disciplinary studio Vichcraft. With a focus on visual storytelling\, Jenna strives to craft charmingly unique brand experiences. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a brief artist talk followed by an opening reception for Non-Constants\, an exhibition featuring work by Ashley Freeby and Jesse Meredith. \n\nEmerging from recurring conversations about access\, authenticity and authorship\, artists Ashley Freeby and Jesse Meredith make artwork around and through one another’s experiences\, from outside of their own cultural backgrounds. Over the course of a year\, they have worked in one another’s studios\, traded primary research sources and conducted a series of structured conversations about their own personal experiences. Non-Constants presents recent work that has stemmed from this exchange. \nMany of their collaborative artworks address racialized experiences in the United States and transpose them with survivalism and defensive preparation. Using a technique of doubling\, one artist produces a piece through synthesis of conversations and research\, and the other re-makes it\, displacing its context. \nAt a time of polarization and broken lines of communication\, Non-Constants asks viewers to consider the impact of their own presence in the environments they inhabit\, to reclaim permission to be inquisitive and open\, and think outside of individualized experiences. \n\nNon-Constants will be on view through March 16\, 2019 at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. Channeling surrealist artists like Magritte\, Dali\, and De Chirico\, you’ll be invited to build magical environments from the pages of National Geographic and other glossy periodicals. \nGuest Artist\, Michelle Richardella\, will share a few unique ways to transfer images (using packing tape and the eco-friendly cleaner\, Citrasolv) from books and magazines to create a foundation for your own drawings and painting. The unpredictable nature of the process often adds a dreamlike or magical quality to the page that can then be collaged\, drawn\, or painted back into. \nGet more milage out of your favorite magazines–please bring along back issues of magazines that might be fun to manipulate. \nMichelle Richardella is an artist\, educator\, and community organizer based in Chicago. She works in many different creative environments. Her work comes to life in the lessons in her classroom\, her sketches out in the city streets\, her watercolors on her travels\, or in the collaborations with her artist friends.  Her work can be described by the fluid line work\, vibrant colors\, and explosions of paint. Whether it be imagined abstractions or expressive depictions of a subject\, at the core of her work\, she investigates the world\, and her art documents the journey. \nVirtue Cider: Gregory Hall founded Virtue Cider in 2011. He is known for his 20-year tenure as brewmaster at the Goose Island Beer Company\, having won 14 consecutive Great American Beer Festival medals and pioneered bourbon barrel-aged beer with Bourbon County Stout. In the spring of 2011\, Hall left Goose Island and embarked on a two-month pilgrimage to study the craft of cider\, touring and tasting at top cidermakers in England and France. He brought his extensive experience and innovative style to launch Virtue Cider. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! O’Brien\, Roni Packer\, Steve Reinke\, Kay Rosen. Alice Tippit\, Orkideh Torabi\, Amanda Williams\, Brittney Leeanne Williams\nEternal Recurrence: New Editions from Spudnik Press Cooperative features prints by 28 artists who recently developed new print-based projects through the Spudnik Press Cooperative Residency and Publishing Programs. \nThe Spudnik Press Cooperative Residency Program provides artists unfettered studio access to produce a new body of print-based work. For the first time in 2018\, the Residency Program was open to national artists in addition to local artists. Renowned printmakers Anita Jung and Tom Christison travelled from Iowa City to be our first regional visiting artists. \nThe Spudnik Press Cooperative Publishing Program invites artists representing a variety of contemporary disciplines—ranging from painting and drawing to performance and experiential art making—to develop a fine art print in collaboration with professional printers at Spudnik Press. \nTogether\, these programs provide entry point into the unique facets of printmaking\, such as its historical and cultural roots as a social art practice and its role in contemporary art practices. \nThe phrase Eternal Recurrence is borrowed from Steve Reinke’s print entitled Eternal Recurrence of Shame from his series featuring absurd\, crude\, humorous\, and poetic aphorisms and short phrases. Reinke’s piece references a phenomenon Nietzsche calls “eternal recurrence” in a passage from The Gay Science. In the passage\, Nietzsche asserts that existence may recur in an infinite cycle as energy and matter transform over time. \nThe artists included in this exhibition maintain a wide range of studio practices and experiential art making. Eternal Recurrence reflects the continual transformation of ink and paper to reflect artists’ visions and honors the act of creation as a continuous process responsive to a particular time and place–a particular recurrence of the infinite possibilities. \nThe work in Eternal Recurrence features screenprinting\, relief\, letterpress\, intaglio\, and monoprinting techniques\, using a range of traditional and nontraditional materials and bringing together an impressive collection of artists. Each prints reflects the artist’s vision and dedication to their individual practices while showcasing the creative\, analytical and technical processes of art making. \n\nEternal Recurrence: New Editions from Spudnik Press Cooperative will be on view through May 25\, 2019 at The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. DESCRIPTION:An annual\, self-guided tour of printmaking production\, publishing\, exhibition and sales venues throughout the City of Chicago\nOrganized by Spudnik Press Cooperative\nThe Chicago Print Crawl offers a behind-the-scenes peek into Chicago’s vibrant printmaking industry. 36 eclectic printmaking venues throughout the city are inviting the public to stop by for a day of free activities including studio tours\, print sales\, hands-on art projects\, gallery exhibitions\, and printmaking demonstrations. \nChicago has been a hub for commercial printing since the late nineteenth century with dozens of mail order catalogs (Sears Roebuck and Co.)\, magazines (Time Magazine via RR Donnelley)\, and maps (Rand McNally) all produced in the area. While the printing industry has undergone tremendous change\, the Third Coast continues to boast an impressive spectrum of print shops from private artist studios to commercial facilities to collectives and educational spaces. Some venues proudly house cast iron presses\, tradition stone lithography\, and analog processes. Other favor digital design\, modern technology\, or a blend of old and new. DESCRIPTION:Come explore alternate futures and pasts at our drop-in artmaking event\, Paper Trail!\nEach guest will construct their own personalized zine that investigates the future\, the past\, and storytelling. One copy of the zine will be ceremonially contributed to a community time capsule; a second copy can be taken home at the end of the evening. Participants will have the opportunity to try out both screenprinting and relief block printing to customize their adventure (and get hooked on printmaking). \nThis free community event is presented by Spudnik Press Fellows\, Vidisha Aggarwal\, Atlan Arceo-Witzl\, Lisa Armstrong\, and Lya Finston. They have collaboratively designed this festive evening to welcome friends and family (with and without printmaking experience) to stop by and check out Spudnik Press\, to meet and make art with other print-curious individuals\, and to speculate on the future of print through creative prompts that bring together science fiction and artmaking. \nAges 16+ are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Carlos Hernandez\, visiting all the way from Texas\, will get the ball rolling with FREE SKETCHBOOKS (compliments of Speedball) for all participants! Using your new sketchbook plus drawing materials\, found imagery from magazines\, newspapers and other print media\, you will jumpstart your sketchbooks through exercises designed to push experimentation and free-flowing creativity. Like Jasper Johns said….”It’s simple\, you just take something and do something to it\, and then do something else to it. Keep doing this\, and pretty soon you’ve got something. “ \nThe work of Houston-based serigraphy artist Carlos Hernandez has designed and printed gig posters for such artists as The Kills\, Arcade Fire\, Kings of Leon\, Santana\, and more. Carlos is a founding partner of Burning Bones Press\, a full-service printmaking studio in Houston. \nCarlos will be joined by his collaborator\, Bill Fick. Bill Fick is a printmaker who lives in Durham\, North Carolina.  For the past 28 years Fick has been making super-graphic narrative prints that deal with a variety of satirical and sociopolitical themes. His current work focuses on monsters\, clowns\, misfits and low-life\, characters that reflect society’s ever-growing anxieties and insecurities. These images are presented in a variety of forms including prints\, posters and t-shirts. \nFick and Hernandez are also Speedball Art Products Professional Artist Partners and are touring the United States visiting university\, professional and community print shops demonstrating printmaking techniques. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

SUMMARY:Noah Breuer:  CB&S Werkstätte | Opening Reception & Artist Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for as the artist lets us experience first-hand his process in pattern formation followed by an artist reception for CB&S Werkstätte featuring the work of Noah Breuer. \nIn his first Chicago solo exhibition\, Noah Breuer presents prints and fabric wall hangings from his ongoing project that examines the visual legacy of “Carl Breuer and Sons” (CB&S)\, his Jewish family’s former textile printing business in Bohemia. The exhibition’s title\, CB&S Werkstätte is a nod to the now-defunct family business that began in 1897 and was forcibly sold to Nazi-approved owners in 1942. Breuer acquired a rich digital collection of original CB&S designs and fabric samples during a 2016 research trip to the Czech Textile Museum and has used these images as the primary source material for his current work.  The exhibition features recent laser-engraved woodblock prints\, large cyanotypes on cotton and an accompanying risograph-printed artist book published by Spudnik Press.    \nIn conjunction with the opening\, Breuer will facilitate a demonstration that will allow exhibition attendees to use the laser-engraved surfaces of custom-built table-tops to make wax rubbings. Attendees may collaborate with the artist and produce new artworks inspired by the CB&S factory designs.  The table-tops will be displayed and made available for use through the duration of the exhibition.  \nNoah Breuer:  CB&S Werkstätte will be on view through July 27\, 2019 in The Annex at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussing with Andrea Carlson\, Robert Cozzolino\, and Chris Pappan\nThroughout history artists have made images that affirm and challenge political beliefs. Printmaking has both been a vehicle for disseminating popular agendas and resisting dominant culture. Join Andrea Carlson (Resident Artist)\, Robert Cozzolino (Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, Curator of Painting) and Chris Pappan (Artist) for a discussion on various histories of propaganda and printed matter. \nThis event is presented in conjunction with Andrea Carlson’s Summer 2019 Residency. New prints produced through the Spudnik Press Residency Program will be on view and released at this free public event.  \nAbout the panelists:\nAndrea Carlson is a visual artist currently living in Chicago\, Illinois. Through painting and drawing\, Carlson cites entangled cultural narratives and institutional authority relating to objects based on the merit of possession and display. Her work has been acquired by institutions such as the British Museum\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, and the National Gallery of Canada. Carlson was a 2008 McKnight Fellow and a 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors grant recipient. \nRobert Cozzolino was born\, raised\, and studied in the Midwest. A native of Chicago\, he earned his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a dissertation on Ivan Albright. In his work on American art he has emphasized regional diversity\, integrating artists of Chicago\, Wisconsin\, California\, and other areas into installations\, thematic exhibitions and his scholarship. Dr. Cozzolino is currently the Patrick and Aimee Butler Curator of Paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Prior to his current appointment\, Dr. Cozzolino was the Senior Curator and Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of Modern Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, Philadelphia (PAFA). \nChris Pappan is a Chicago-based artist of Kaw\, Osage\, and Cheyenne River Sioux heritage. His artwork is based on American Indian ledger drawings of the mid to late 19th Century\, and through use of evocative imagery and mixed media\, his work has an undeniable 21st Century twist. In 2015 he presented Account Past Due: Ledger Art & Beyond at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. In 2016-19 the Field Museum of Natural History organized a show of his drawings and paintings called Drawing on Tradition: Kanza Artist Chris Pappan. DESCRIPTION:What simple rituals guide your day? How do everyday objects affect how you move through the world?  For guest artist Atlan Arceo-Witzl\, mundane objects and small events from everyday life are elevated through the ritual of daily drawing. \nAtlan will help participants build a visual interpretation of an object\, idol\, or passion of your choosing.  Make a visual record of your daily routines through making a commemorative poster inspired by the bold bright bold shapes and colors of hand-painted signs in grocery ads. Bring a small object you’d like pay homage to\, or allow yourself to be inspired by the everyday objects we carry with us–pens\, ear buds\, receipts\, or whatever oddment have been bouncing around your book bag. \nAbout the artist:  Atlan Arceo-Witzl is a Mexican-American visual artist and creator whose work is concerned with everyday rituals\, icons\, symbols\, objects\, and language. He is a recent graduate of Skidmore College with a BS in Studio Art\, concentrating in relief printmaking\, sculpture and drawing. He lives outside of Chicago in Oak Park\, IL pursuing a career in the arts and enjoying the fascinating human game of communication. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of informal conversation with resident artist João Oliveira and writer and curator Jessica Cochran\, as they discuss João’s residency project and his participation in the international artist exchange program Close to There < > Perto de Lá. \n“Little amusements: i’m going to love you\, hold you\, squeeze you\, until you’re in tiny pieces is the result of the impression of plastic animals bodies\, torn apart by the same method that I used as a child (and experimental medical coroner). after being misplaced and shredded\, these animals undergo a heating process\, developed by me to turn them into two-dimensional matrices that I print with the same procedures traditionally used on engraving\, resulting in a kind of graphic stain; a unique mark of violence that links the author to his act.” \n–João Oliveira\, 2019 \nJoão Oliveira is a visual artist with a BA in Visual Arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia (2011)\, and a Master’s in Creative Process in Visual Arts from the same university (2017). He is trained in lithography and metal engraving through the Workshops at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM-BA). He works on the encounter of metal engraving with other supports\, appropriating personal experience in order to create works with a forged autobiographical nature\, obtained through small rituals of self-fiction. \nNamed a “curator to watch” by Chicago Magazine in 2013\, Jessica Cochran has curated exhibitions for numerous venues and groups\, including the Contemporary Arts Council\, School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, The Franklin\, What it Is\, the MDW art fair and Center for Book Arts in New York. For over seven years\, I was a curator in academic galleries at Columbia College Chicago and Dominican University; in 2014 she was a participating fellow at the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries Leadership Institute at Northwestern University. She has developed innovative public programming as Director of Marketing and Programs at Art Chicago and NEXT: The Invitational Exhibition of Emerging Art\, and organized the inaugural Converge Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forums.  Jessica also served on the board at Spudnik Press 2013-17. \nClose to There < > Perto de Lá is an international artist exchange project between Comfort Station (Chicago\, USA) and Projeto Ativa (Salvador\, Brazil)\, in collaboration with Harmonipan (Mexico City\, Salvador)\, made possible by the MacArthur Foundation International Connections Fund. By bringing members of these two artistic communities in proximity with one another\, this project aims to gestate long-term artistic collaborations between the participants\, share arts-organizing models from their respective socio-political-artistic contexts\, and encourage creative discourse around ideas such as the African Diaspora and contemporary Latinx/Latin American identities. \nThe exchange will begin with a multi-disciplinary group of Salvador-based artists visiting Chicago August 9th – 29th 2019\, carrying out a variety of programs\, performances\, and research through Comfort Station and its partner spaces across the city. DESCRIPTION:Memory is an unbeatable springboard into creativity. Our October Drink and Draw will be led by Vicky Grube\, who is visiting all the way from North Carolina! Her work focuses on materials\, what they can teach us\, and narrative. This event presents an opportunity to connect with others and fuse recollections to create story boards and collaborative drawings with friends and strangers alike. In turn\, you will create unforgettable new memories while sharing old ones. Bring your favorite drawing utensils and beverages. \n\nVicky Grube earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois and an MFA in theatre arts from the University of Iowa. She became the director of a Suzuki preschool arts program in Iowa City\, taught art\, art education and theatre design as an adjunct at the University of Iowa\, Mt Mercy College and Cornell College while earning a PhD in art education from the University of Iowa. She has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in numerous locations such as University of Northern Iowa\, Cedar Falls\, Iowa; Lloyd Shinn Gallery\, Chicago Illinois\, The Joslyn Art Museum\, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art\, Des Moines Art Museum\, University of Iowa\, Cornell College\, Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, East Tennessee State University among other galleries. Currently\, Grube creates autobiographical graphic novels and is altering an old school bus to be sustainable and to serve as a traveling art studio for children. She is a professor of Art Education at Appalachian State University. \n\nDrink & Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.
