DESCRIPTION:Join us for a collaborative event with Rough House on Tuesday\, August 13th from 7-9 pm! \nRough House is a multidisciplinary organization whose aim is to connect communities through art. They celebrate uniqueness through weirdness and foster connection through the even weirder. Together with Rough House\, we will be merging minds about printing\, visual art\, and performing objects! \nPuppets in Progress (PIPs) is a quarterly\, informal forum for artists and puppeteers of any level of experience to bring fledgling puppet experiments to a non-judgmental audience for feedback and support. Bring whatever you’re working on and get encouragement and feedback from other Chicago puppet-folks! \nEveryone is welcome: whether you are new to puppetry or a veteran with a new project; whether you are a dancer\, comics artist\, performance poet\, teacher\, lifeguard\, or an engineer just curious about what puppetry looks like today! Bring a project\, no matter how *Rough*\, or just come for the conversation. There will be snacks provided and many supportive humans to meet!

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Spudnik Press Resident Artist João Oliveira and Jessica Cochran
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of informal conversation with resident artist João Oliveira and writer and curator Jessica Cochran\, as they discuss João’s residency project and his participation in the international artist exchange program Close to There < > Perto de Lá. \n“Little amusements: i’m going to love you\, hold you\, squeeze you\, until you’re in tiny pieces is the result of the impression of plastic animals bodies\, torn apart by the same method that I used as a child (and experimental medical coroner). after being misplaced and shredded\, these animals undergo a heating process\, developed by me to turn them into two-dimensional matrices that I print with the same procedures traditionally used on engraving\, resulting in a kind of graphic stain; a unique mark of violence that links the author to his act.” \n–João Oliveira\, 2019 \nJoão Oliveira is a visual artist with a BA in Visual Arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia (2011)\, and a Master’s in Creative Process in Visual Arts from the same university (2017). He is trained in lithography and metal engraving through the Workshops at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM-BA). He works on the encounter of metal engraving with other supports\, appropriating personal experience in order to create works with a forged autobiographical nature\, obtained through small rituals of self-fiction. \nNamed a “curator to watch” by Chicago Magazine in 2013\, Jessica Cochran has curated exhibitions for numerous venues and groups\, including the Contemporary Arts Council\, School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, The Franklin\, What it Is\, the MDW art fair and Center for Book Arts in New York. For over seven years\, I was a curator in academic galleries at Columbia College Chicago and Dominican University; in 2014 she was a participating fellow at the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries Leadership Institute at Northwestern University. She has developed innovative public programming as Director of Marketing and Programs at Art Chicago and NEXT: The Invitational Exhibition of Emerging Art\, and organized the inaugural Converge Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forums.  Jessica also served on the board at Spudnik Press 2013-17. \nClose to There < > Perto de Lá is an international artist exchange project between Comfort Station (Chicago\, USA) and Projeto Ativa (Salvador\, Brazil)\, in collaboration with Harmonipan (Mexico City\, Salvador)\, made possible by the MacArthur Foundation International Connections Fund. By bringing members of these two artistic communities in proximity with one another\, this project aims to gestate long-term artistic collaborations between the participants\, share arts-organizing models from their respective socio-political-artistic contexts\, and encourage creative discourse around ideas such as the African Diaspora and contemporary Latinx/Latin American identities. \nThe exchange will begin with a multi-disciplinary group of Salvador-based artists visiting Chicago August 9th – 29th 2019\, carrying out a variety of programs\, performances\, and research through Comfort Station and its partner spaces across the city. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: October 2019 | Collaborative Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Memory is an unbeatable springboard into creativity. Our October Drink and Draw will be led by Vicky Grube\, who is visiting all the way from North Carolina! Her work focuses on materials\, what they can teach us\, and narrative. This event presents an opportunity to connect with others and fuse recollections to create story boards and collaborative drawings with friends and strangers alike. In turn\, you will create unforgettable new memories while sharing old ones. Bring your favorite drawing utensils and beverages. \n\nVicky Grube earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois and an MFA in theatre arts from the University of Iowa. She became the director of a Suzuki preschool arts program in Iowa City\, taught art\, art education and theatre design as an adjunct at the University of Iowa\, Mt Mercy College and Cornell College while earning a PhD in art education from the University of Iowa. She has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in numerous locations such as University of Northern Iowa\, Cedar Falls\, Iowa; Lloyd Shinn Gallery\, Chicago Illinois\, The Joslyn Art Museum\, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art\, Des Moines Art Museum\, University of Iowa\, Cornell College\, Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, East Tennessee State University among other galleries. Currently\, Grube creates autobiographical graphic novels and is altering an old school bus to be sustainable and to serve as a traveling art studio for children. She is a professor of Art Education at Appalachian State University. \n\nDrink & Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

SUMMARY:Tessellate
DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press Cooperative Fellows Ally Hembree\, Hope Wang\, Sean Mac\, and Zakia Rowlett are pleased to present Tessellate\, a night of collective artmaking and installation-building with the Chicago community. Hybridizing the fellows’ individual artistic practices\, Tessellate invites guests to experience a variety of print-based techniques considering collage as a tool for creating narratives. Through screenprinting\, paper embossing\, risography\, and relief printing\, guests will construct their own prints into never-ending books as part of a collaborative viewing library at the Spudnik Press studio. Printmaking experience is not required and all materials will be provided. \nThis event is free and open to the public as part of the Hubbard Street Lofts Open House. The installation will be on view until Nov 10\, 2019. \n— \nAlly Hembree is a printmaker focused in screen printing\, relief\, and polyester plate lithography. She has a B.A. in Studio Art with a minor in Communication Studies from the University of Puget Sound. The subject matter of Ally’s work is heavily influenced by the environment in which she creates. While at the University of Puget Sound\, she connected her critical interest in film media with her printmaking. Her senior thesis\, Moments\, inspired by the unforgiving Pacific Ocean\, was an installation of 40+ polyester plate lithographs. Likewise the screenprints incorporated in Tessellate are influenced by the sometimes equally unforgiving Chicago cityscape. \nHope Wang is a Chicago-based artist and educator working in painting\, screenprinting\, photography\, and weaving to create meticulous reproductions of primarily industrial and commercial facades. Drawing from architectural elements as symbols for how people negotiate belonging and agency in public spaces\, her work questions an initial understanding of material and perception. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has shown in exhibitions including Chicago Textile Week\, Ignition Project Space\, FRIEND\, Chicago Art Department\, Gallery No One\, and Sullivan Galleries. She has also instructed workshops at The Weaving Mill\, Loom Chicago\, and Magical Minds Studio. \nSean Mac is a Chicago-based illustrator\, cartoonist\, and muralist. He uses comic books and zines as a platform for storytelling and narrative. He enjoys writing humorous stories and drawing colorful characters. In addition to self publishing his comics his work includes screenprinting and public art. He graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Columbia College Chicago. \nZakia Rowlett is an experimental Graphic Designer\, currently based in Chicago\, IL. She spent four years at the Illinois Institute of Chicago\, earning her BFA in Graphic Design. Through the use of typography\, layering texture\, expression of color\, and challenging traditional compositions she practices interdisciplinary digital and print media. Referencing multiple forms of communication from signage\, human interaction\, or recurring events as a way of demonstrating all things open to your own interpretation. \nTessellate is an opportunity to get an inside look into each of the fellows’ practices and also learn new techniques they can take home and apply in the future. We hope they can have fun with collage and story building while engaging with other guests’ pieces through the interactive installation. Fellows will also have affordable work for sale!

SUMMARY:Border Land X Scapes & The Future
DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Resident Artist Celeste De Luna is a border/social engagement artist from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. She is a front row witness as an artist/activist to the national conversations about the border wall\, immigration\, and border militarization. \nAs part of her residency and cultural exchange with Chicago printmakers\, De Luna is leading a community art workshop where we will respond with visual art and creative writing to her reports on how social engagement artists and activists are working to decolonize the Border. All are welcome at this participatory event where we will collaboratively envision a different future that honors and centers the power of indigenous people\, plants\, and animals. \n\nFree and open to the public \n\nThis event is made possible with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts Arts Work Grant.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.\nBrief Artist Talk: 6:15 p.m.\nDomestic Tides / Indigenous Mind explores a move from the prairies of North Dakota to the urban environment of Chicago. The exhibition considers Jessica Christy‘s transplanted indigenous identity\, one connected to place\, in the midst of a culture shock. While exploring a new city\, both foreign and known images were gathered: deer hair\, parking signs\, coyote tracks\, municipal tickets\, bird feathers\, and corner store signs. Through self-applied cultural guilt and gender expectations\, visuals emerge that suggest the artist’s voice is becoming comfortable in the 21st century metropolis. \nAs traditional printmaking moves from a commercial process to fine art editions to a contemporary medium\, artists are continually exploring new matrices and substrates and their conceptual implications. The work in Domestic Tides / Indigenous Mind stems from a fascination with this contemporary shift. Images are transferred through print onto surfaces found and gathered in Chicago. The artist’s cultural and personal transition from the Great Plains to an urban Chicago environment is represented on found wood\, fabric\, and other surfaces through text and imagery gathered in a daily journal. Domestic Tides / Indigenous Mind employs these new substrates to intimately speak to the artist’s experiences of cultural disconnect\, domestic struggles\, and a general liaison with her new environment. \n\nDomestic Tides / Indigenous Mind will be on view November 15\, 2019 through January 18\, 2020 at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. DESCRIPTION:In 1987 Blue Man Group was founded in New York.\nIn 1963 Bobby Vinton released the hit song Blue on Blue.\nFrom 1901-1904 Picasso went through his Blue Period\, making monochromatic paintings of that color.\nIn 1871 the earliest recorded version of the bridal poem “Something old\, something new\, something borrowed\, something blue” appeared.\nIn 1843 Anna Atkins published Photographs of British Algae using the alternative photographic process of cyanotype; as the name suggests\, the prints are blue in color.\nAround 1840 the Satin Bowerbird was discovered; the males in this bird species are a deep shiny blue color and during courtship build structures called bowers\, decorating them with blue objects.\n\nUsing the above and anything blue (Delftware\, Brilliant Blue FCF\, Smurfs\, deep sea diving etc.) as our inspiration\, we will create monochromatic imagery.\n\nWe’ll provide a range of blue pens\, markers\, pencils and paper\, from light cyan to deep navy. Help us round out our one-night Blue Period by bringing your favorite blue knick knack or additional blue materials for inspiration\, drawing on\, or drawing with.\n\n\nVeronica Siehl is an artist and printmaker based in Chicago. Siehl received her MFA in printmaking from the University of Tennessee (2010) and her BA in Studio Art from Beloit College (2006). Siehl’s work has been shown in various cities including Chicago (IL)\, New Orleans (LA)\, Poznan (Poland)\, Olympia (WA)\, and Knoxville (TN). Her multidisciplinary studio practice includes printmaking\, alternative photo processes\, drawing\, writing and installation. \nVeronica is well known for her cyanotypes\, and has taught many cyanotype classes at Spudnik Press. \n\n\n\nDrink & Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Sean Mac\nTake a break from your typical ways of drawing. We’ll help you get out of your head by sharing a variety of creative approaches to making marks on paper. We’ll draw big things small\, small things big. We’ll draw with delicate dip pens\, clunky crayons\, finger paint\, sticks\, and more. The goal of the night: experience drawing as a way to snap out of old habits and try on a new drawing styles. \nOur guest artist\, Sean Mac\, will introduce his favorite drawing exercises that help him break old habits and stay positive. SUMMARY:Accessibility in the Studio: An Evening with Resident Artist Benjamin Merritt
DESCRIPTION:Meet Benjamin Merritt\, Resident Artist from Minneapolis\, MN\, for a conversation addressing disability in the arts\, his own artistic practice\, and considerations and strategies to make studio arts like printmaking more accessible for people of all abilities. Printmakers\, teachers\, and those working in academic settings are all encouraged to learn about and discuss what accessibility means and some challenges and solutions to creating accessible classrooms and studios. \nPart artist talk and part participatory conversation\, Benjamin will lead a group conversation addressing how to make arts and academic spaces more accessible. He will share various sensory and adaptive modifications of printmaking tools and projects for the benefit of everyone involved in the arts\, including people with various disabilities.  \nAs an artist and writer\, Benjamin Merritt challenges the normative idea that the body is something individual\, unchanging\, and fully knowable by objective means. His prints and drawings combine imagery and text from his medical records and personal writings\, exploring his own experience with chronic illness as well as how patient’s bodies are written about and recorded. DESCRIPTION:Enter the fourth dimension at our animation themed Drink & Draw this April. Inspired by the surrealist exquisite corpse parlor game in which a collection of words and images are assembled by a group of people\, we will create a collaborative animation centered on the theme of time. \nGuest Artist\, Lisa Armstrong\, will share how the element of time can turn simple drawings into playful juxtaposition\, abstract stories\, and unexpected visual delights. Drawn animation frames can take the form of comics\, storyboards\, patterns\, color fields\, photo collage\, or type-based images. The evening will culminate with everyone photographing their frames to create and a collaborative stop-motion animation. Our first ever online Drink & Draw will be led by guest artist\, Ally Hembree\, who will guide us through how to use shapes\, patterns\, and a limited color palette to illustrate our answers to these questions\, and rejuvenate special objects within our home.  \nEmbellish a household object\, upcycle a glass bottle\, or follow Ally’s lead by painting a terracotta pot!
