SUMMARY:Blue on Blue: Drink & Draw | December 2019
DESCRIPTION:In 1987 Blue Man Group was founded in New York.\nIn 1963 Bobby Vinton released the hit song Blue on Blue.\nFrom 1901-1904 Picasso went through his Blue Period\, making monochromatic paintings of that color.\nIn 1871 the earliest recorded version of the bridal poem “Something old\, something new\, something borrowed\, something blue” appeared.\nIn 1843 Anna Atkins published Photographs of British Algae using the alternative photographic process of cyanotype; as the name suggests\, the prints are blue in color.\nAround 1840 the Satin Bowerbird was discovered; the males in this bird species are a deep shiny blue color and during courtship build structures called bowers\, decorating them with blue objects.\n\nUsing the above and anything blue (Delftware\, Brilliant Blue FCF\, Smurfs\, deep sea diving etc.) as our inspiration\, we will create monochromatic imagery.\n\nWe’ll provide a range of blue pens\, markers\, pencils and paper\, from light cyan to deep navy. Help us round out our one-night Blue Period by bringing your favorite blue knick knack or additional blue materials for inspiration\, drawing on\, or drawing with.\n\n\nVeronica Siehl is an artist and printmaker based in Chicago. Siehl received her MFA in printmaking from the University of Tennessee (2010) and her BA in Studio Art from Beloit College (2006). Siehl’s work has been shown in various cities including Chicago (IL)\, New Orleans (LA)\, Poznan (Poland)\, Olympia (WA)\, and Knoxville (TN). Her multidisciplinary studio practice includes printmaking\, alternative photo processes\, drawing\, writing and installation. \nVeronica is well known for her cyanotypes\, and has taught many cyanotype classes at Spudnik Press. \n\n\n\nDrink & Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. DESCRIPTION:Join Spudnik Press Cooperative and TIES for an open mic event presented in conjunction with Domestic Tides / Indigenous Mind\, a solo exhibition by Jessica Christy. \nThe event will start with readings by three featured performers\, Patrick Del Percio\, Ruby Figueroa\, and Yerika. Following these readings\, attendees will be invited to take the mic.  Anyone who identifies with Queer/Trans/Two-Spirit experiences and identifies with Indigenous roots on this hemisphere and is interested in participating in the open mic can sign up in person. \nThis event will take place within the Spudnik Press gallery and compliments the current exhibition. Domestic Tides / Indigenous Mind considers Jessica Christy’s transplanted indigenous identity\, and her cultural and personal transition from the Great Plains to an urban Chicago environment. Christy’s artwork incorporates foreign and known items and images gathered while exploring the city (deer hair\, parking signs\, coyote tracks\, municipal tickets\, bird feathers\, and corner store signs) to intimately speak to the artist’s experiences of cultural disconnect\, domestic struggles\, and a general liaison with her new environment. \nTIES is a series of open mics centering Indigenous Queer\, Trans\, and Two-Spirit writers. Hosted by Patrick Del Percio (Cherokee) and River Ian Kerstetter (Wisconsin Oneida)\, TIES seeks to bring Indigenous Queer\, Trans\, and Two Spirit people together to share and connect throughout occupied Odawa\, Ojibwe\, and Potawatomi lands (Chicago) and beyond. Anyone who identifies with Queer/Trans/Two-Spirit experiences and identifies with Indigenous roots on this hemisphere is invited to share poetry\, prose\, and performance.

DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Sean Mac\nTake a break from your typical ways of drawing. We’ll help you get out of your head by sharing a variety of creative approaches to making marks on paper. We’ll draw big things small\, small things big. We’ll draw with delicate dip pens\, clunky crayons\, finger paint\, sticks\, and more. The goal of the night: experience drawing as a way to snap out of old habits and try on a new drawing styles. \nOur guest artist\, Sean Mac\, will introduce his favorite drawing exercises that help him break old habits and stay positive. Shifting scale from oversized butcher paper to tiny post-it notes will be one of many methods used to help guests experience new ways of drawing that emphasize creativity over control. \nSean Mac is a Chicago-based illustrator\, cartoonist\, and printmaker. He’s been a compulsive doodler since he was a kid and really nothing has changed since. Hiswork uses loose linework and vibrant colors to tell humorous and intimate stories within each panel. SUMMARY:Accessibility in the Studio: An Evening with Resident Artist Benjamin Merritt
DESCRIPTION:Meet Benjamin Merritt\, Resident Artist from Minneapolis\, MN\, for a conversation addressing disability in the arts\, his own artistic practice\, and considerations and strategies to make studio arts like printmaking more accessible for people of all abilities. Printmakers\, teachers\, and those working in academic settings are all encouraged to learn about and discuss what accessibility means and some challenges and solutions to creating accessible classrooms and studios. \nPart artist talk and part participatory conversation\, Benjamin will lead a group conversation addressing how to make arts and academic spaces more accessible. He will share various sensory and adaptive modifications of printmaking tools and projects for the benefit of everyone involved in the arts\, including people with various disabilities.  \nAs an artist and writer\, Benjamin Merritt challenges the normative idea that the body is something individual\, unchanging\, and fully knowable by objective means. His prints and drawings combine imagery and text from his medical records and personal writings\, exploring his own experience with chronic illness as well as how patient’s bodies are written about and recorded. DESCRIPTION:Enter the fourth dimension at our animation themed Drink & Draw this April. Inspired by the surrealist exquisite corpse parlor game in which a collection of words and images are assembled by a group of people\, we will create a collaborative animation centered on the theme of time. \nGuest Artist\, Lisa Armstrong\, will share how the element of time can turn simple drawings into playful juxtaposition\, abstract stories\, and unexpected visual delights. Drawn animation frames can take the form of comics\, storyboards\, patterns\, color fields\, photo collage\, or type-based images. The evening will culminate with everyone photographing their frames to create and a collaborative stop-motion animation. Our first ever online Drink & Draw will be led by guest artist\, Ally Hembree\, who will guide us through how to use shapes\, patterns\, and a limited color palette to illustrate our answers to these questions\, and rejuvenate special objects within our home.  \nEmbellish a household object\, upcycle a glass bottle\, or follow Ally’s lead by painting a terracotta pot! At this Drink & Draw\, we will use art and poetry to envision what our city would look like if we spent that money on things like housing\, health care\, and education. What inventive community resources would you like to see our city invest in? This kind of collective imagining is a powerful and necessary tool for conjuring a new reality that could make policing obsolete. Not from Chicago? No experience is necessary for this loose and improvisational approach to drawing that is not meant to be hyper-realistic. This exhibition reflects on the unique power of a printmaking studio to breathe new life into the art making process\, and how we depend on art during times of crisis for solace and meaning. Our title and theme With Renewed Urgency is also a chance to reflect on how the current pandemic has escalated already existing social emergencies that many of our featured artists have long been making work about. The call of Andrea Carlson and Celeste De Luna’s Indigenous Futurism rings even louder\, as capitalism and colonization turn COVID-19 into an economic disaster. Others like Selina Trepp and Benjamin Merritt give us critical and pleasurable ways to reconsider what it means for an artist to remain homebound\, reduce their material consumption\, or need to rest because of an illness. \nOther show highlights include a collagraph impression of the pelt of a plastic animal by our first international Resident Artist\, João Oliveira\, organized in collaboration with Comfort Station and funded by the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund. The prints from Ten x Ten show a collaboration between visual artists and musicians exploring the translation of artistic gestures across media. \nThe Spudnik Press Cooperative Residency Program provides professional printmakers unfettered studio access for new projects. The Publishing Program welcomes artists from a variety of contemporary disciplines\, ranging from painting and drawing to performance and experiential art making\, to enter a centuries-old tradition of developing a fine art print in collaboration with professional printers. Through these programs\, Spudnik Press invites a diverse range of artists to continue printmaking’s unique history as a fine art\, a master craft\, and a social practice. With Renewed Urgency showcases traditional process and new experiments in screenprint\, intaglio\, relief\, collagraph\, and digital printing\, as well as an impressive range of monotype techniques and prints that used the plate-making process as a form of sculpture. By installing the exhibition throughout the printshop in which the artwork was produced\, we embrace our goal of encouraging artists and audiences to move through a variety of creative roles: making\, experiencing\, learning\, and teaching. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lya Finston\nWatch your pictures jump off the page and onto the screen in this fun\, entry-level animation workshop! During this session\, we’ll take inspiration from our domestic surroundings\, breathing life into the inanimate and the mundane in order to realize fantastical scenes taking place in the home under quarantine. Love drawing? Sketch out a cartoon! Prefer taking pictures? SUMMARY:A Lunchtime Conversation: Alexandra Antoine & Celeste De Luna
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual event with artists Celeste De Luna (2019 Resident Artist) and Alexandra Antoine (2020 Ten x Ten)\, whose prints are up now in our current exhibition With Renewed Urgency. Celeste and Alexandra will each give a short talk about their practice\, followed by a conversation with each other\, the audience\, and the printmakers they worked with at Spudnik Press. \nTuesday\, September 22\n12pm – 1pm (CST)\nZoom Meeting ID: 956 0089 4990 \nAlexandra Antoine is a Chicago-based artist who also works with Free Write Arts & Literacy as a teaching artist throughout the city. Her work is multidisciplinary in nature but connected through the themes of language\, line\, color and portraiture. She references her Haitian-American cultural upbringing and memories of travel\, community\, and storytelling. Woven throughout her work are the underlying influences of non-verbal languages such as symbols on cloth\, scarification on bodies\, and colors with significant spiritual and cultural meanings. These elements play a role in the translation of her experiences of visual and methodical research of place\, people and culture. Alexandra came to Spudnik Press as part of the Ten x Ten project which pairs visual artists with composers to create original\, collaborative works. \nCeleste De Luna is a printmaker from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She is “a true daughter of the border lands” according to Inez Hernandes-Avila and a self-described Nepantlera\, from the Nahuatl word meaning in-between space. De Luna has been a front-row witness to the militarization of the U.S. Mexico border\, and has an intimate connection to the issues of immigration and decolonization she engages with as an artist and activist. For De Luna\, printmaking is a tool for desconstructing oppressive paradigms in her physical\, spiritual\, and psychic environment; through this medium she creates new landscapes and iconographies about women\, children\, and families at the border\, and the spiritual struggle of conflicting identities and “survivor’s guilt” they experience during migration. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lucia Calderon Arrieta\n\nWhat does it mean to draw into the page?\nIf you could turn a picture plane filled with holes and circles into a world of portals\, where might they lead you?\n\nLucia Calderon Arrieta will show us how to use line\, shape\, and value to create interconnected forms that are mysterious and mesmerizing\, casting an illusion of depth and inviting us into many different layers of space. During quarantine\, many of us have experienced moments of retreat\, or turning inwards. Lucia will show us how she uses this drawing practice to embrace those feelings\, and dig into the picture plane rather than trying to expand off of it. \nNo drawing experience is needed for this meditative and abstracted project. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Altered Records
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Ashley Houghton\nArtist\, printmaker\, and athlete Ashley Houghton uses collage throughout her own practice\, altering the “official” records she finds in mass media and popular photography to change the narrative about culture and values\, particularly about women in sports. We will use found materials and new drawings to change the context and content of existing stories\, including political and social issues we want to reframe from their typical depictions. We’ll use the power of erasures as much as additions\, and consider collage as an act of “writing” with visual media.
