Whether students are in the classroom or learning from home\, using a tablet or a pencil and paper\, one thing is certain: their teachers will have a lasting impact on them\, as our teachers had on us. \nSo please join cartoonist and teaching artist Alex Nall for a comics workshop celebrating our favorite teachers\, and how they shaped us into who we are today. Alex will lead us in writing\, drawing and designing our own page of comic book art using memories from elementary\, high school\, or beyond. Simple set-up and endless storytelling possibilities await! No drawing experience required. Only honesty\, openness\, and creativity are required to craft your story. We will then put those theories into practice together. Starting with pure structure\, we’ll look at how panels express hierarchy\, rhythm\, and emotion through shape and arrangement. Then we’ll generate a variety of images from abstract to still-life\, from drawings based on reference images to a collection of collage materials\, which we will cut up into panels or turn into “viewfinder” style overlays for a finished page. As we go\, we’ll discuss the different relationships between text and picture in comics: how text can complement\, expand on\, or emphasize picture\, and vice versa. This exhibition reflects on the unique power of a printmaking studio to breathe new life into the art making process\, and how we depend on art during times of crisis for solace and meaning. Our title and theme With Renewed Urgency is also a chance to reflect on how the current pandemic has escalated already existing social emergencies that many of our featured artists have long been making work about. The call of Andrea Carlson and Celeste De Luna’s Indigenous Futurism rings even louder\, as capitalism and colonization turn COVID-19 into an economic disaster. Others like Selina Trepp and Benjamin Merritt give us critical and pleasurable ways to reconsider what it means for an artist to remain homebound\, reduce their material consumption\, or need to rest because of an illness. \nOther show highlights include a collagraph impression of the pelt of a plastic animal by our first international Resident Artist\, João Oliveira\, organized in collaboration with Comfort Station and funded by the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund. The prints from Ten x Ten show a collaboration between visual artists and musicians exploring the translation of artistic gestures across media. \nThe Spudnik Press Cooperative Residency Program provides professional printmakers unfettered studio access for new projects. The Publishing Program welcomes artists from a variety of contemporary disciplines\, ranging from painting and drawing to performance and experiential art making\, to enter a centuries-old tradition of developing a fine art print in collaboration with professional printers. Through these programs\, Spudnik Press invites a diverse range of artists to continue printmaking’s unique history as a fine art\, a master craft\, and a social practice. With Renewed Urgency showcases traditional process and new experiments in screenprint\, intaglio\, relief\, collagraph\, and digital printing\, as well as an impressive range of monotype techniques and prints that used the plate-making process as a form of sculpture. By installing the exhibition throughout the printshop in which the artwork was produced\, we embrace our goal of encouraging artists and audiences to move through a variety of creative roles: making\, experiencing\, learning\, and teaching. During this session\, we’ll take inspiration from our domestic surroundings\, breathing life into the inanimate and the mundane in order to realize fantastical scenes taking place in the home under quarantine. Love drawing? Sketch out a cartoon! Prefer taking pictures? Bring some objects together in a setting for a stop motion video!\n\nAlong with examples of her own work\, Lya will also showcase a few of the animators she turns to for inspiration\, including Suzan Pitt\, Ray Harryhausen\, Bill Plympton\, Cristóbal León\, and Joanquin Cociña. SUMMARY:A Lunchtime Conversation: Alexandra Antoine & Celeste De Luna
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual event with artists Celeste De Luna (2019 Resident Artist) and Alexandra Antoine (2020 Ten x Ten)\, whose prints are up now in our current exhibition With Renewed Urgency. Celeste and Alexandra will each give a short talk about their practice\, followed by a conversation with each other\, the audience\, and the printmakers they worked with at Spudnik Press. \nTuesday\, September 22\n12pm – 1pm (CST)\nZoom Meeting ID: 956 0089 4990 \nAlexandra Antoine is a Chicago-based artist who also works with Free Write Arts & Literacy as a teaching artist throughout the city. Her work is multidisciplinary in nature but connected through the themes of language\, line\, color and portraiture. She references her Haitian-American cultural upbringing and memories of travel\, community\, and storytelling. Woven throughout her work are the underlying influences of non-verbal languages such as symbols on cloth\, scarification on bodies\, and colors with significant spiritual and cultural meanings. These elements play a role in the translation of her experiences of visual and methodical research of place\, people and culture. Alexandra came to Spudnik Press as part of the Ten x Ten project which pairs visual artists with composers to create original\, collaborative works. \nCeleste De Luna is a printmaker from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She is “a true daughter of the border lands” according to Inez Hernandes-Avila and a self-described Nepantlera\, from the Nahuatl word meaning in-between space. De Luna has been a front-row witness to the militarization of the U.S. Mexico border\, and has an intimate connection to the issues of immigration and decolonization she engages with as an artist and activist. For De Luna\, printmaking is a tool for desconstructing oppressive paradigms in her physical\, spiritual\, and psychic environment; through this medium she creates new landscapes and iconographies about women\, children\, and families at the border\, and the spiritual struggle of conflicting identities and “survivor’s guilt” they experience during migration. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lucia Calderon Arrieta\n\nWhat does it mean to draw into the page?\nIf you could turn a picture plane filled with holes and circles into a world of portals\, where might they lead you?\n\nLucia Calderon Arrieta will show us how to use line\, shape\, and value to create interconnected forms that are mysterious and mesmerizing\, casting an illusion of depth and inviting us into many different layers of space. During quarantine\, many of us have experienced moments of retreat\, or turning inwards. Lucia will show us how she uses this drawing practice to embrace those feelings\, and dig into the picture plane rather than trying to expand off of it. \nNo drawing experience is needed for this meditative and abstracted project. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Ashley Houghton\nArtist\, printmaker\, and athlete Ashley Houghton uses collage throughout her own practice\, altering the “official” records she finds in mass media and popular photography to change the narrative about culture and values\, particularly about women in sports. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Erin Hayden\nArtist and poet Erin Hayden will help us tap into our unconscious by exploiting the randomness of technology to create unplanned—and unplannable—works of art. We’ll start with collaborative and often hilarious writing exercises\, as well as automatic writing and the auto-fill feature\, to inspire\, generating content\, and guide our digital collage making. Looking together at found images\, we’ll use drawing as a way of “note-taking” for new marks and visual ideas that we can add to our  compositions. You can create your collage using free software (as well as “analog” materials) or watch along as Erin shares her own process and methods in Photoshop to create an original artwork with us. \nErin Hayden is an interdisciplinary artist predominantly working in painting\, performance\, poetry\, video\, and installation. Her work has been exhibited in various cities across the US and abroad including at Stony Island Arts Bank\, and Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Torino. Solo exhibitions of her paintings and video work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, and Randy Alexander Gallery. She has been an artist resident at the Ragdale Foundation\, the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity\, Chicago Artists Coalition\, and is a Luminarts Fellow. How might art\, writing\, and poetry help us envision other ways to invest in our city and the citizens of Chicago? What would the city look like if you were in charge of where to invest resources? \nMaybe you want to explore a future with funds reallocated to things like housing\, health care\, and education. Maybe you want to explore more fantastical or playful futures; or your own unique take on urban planning. What inventive community resources would you like to see our city invest in?  \nThis kind of collective imagining is a powerful and necessary tool for conjuring a new reality that could make policing obsolete. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Robert Stokowy\nHow can a drawing convey a sound?\nHow might a drawing double as a score for music?\nHow can the act of listening open up new creativity in your art practice? \nRobert Stokowy invites you to slow down and tune in to your auditory imagination\, to inspire unexpected drawings based on sound art he will share with us. We will also look at contemporary artists who create visual art based on sound\, and vice versa. Starting with recordings from the medieval city of Malta\, Robert will inspire us with a rich collection of abstract and ambient sounds\, tones\, and textures from his own field recordings. Analog sound effects will include a live composition he will mix live for us during the event. \nRobert believes that deep listening can be a clarifying and generative part of the artistic practice\, and that we all have an intuitive ability to make creative associations between sounds and images. He is also an educator with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (P+NAP) where he and his colleagues William Estrada and Sarah Ross have taught printmaking to people incarcerated at Stateville Prison.  \nDuring this virtual talk\, these three artists will discuss both the power of printmaking for individuals in prison\, and the limitations of art education within the larger prison system. \nThey will also present P+NAP’s newest publication\, Carving Out Rights from Inside the Prison Industrial Complex (Hat & Beard Press). The book features 30 brilliantly crafted foam block prints— one for each article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights— made by artists at Stateville Prison whose daily struggle for their own human rights is even more pronounced during a global pandemic in which they are denied basic PPE\, healthcare\, and safety. DESCRIPTION:This April\, we’re dedicating our Drink & Draw series to stitching! Join us for one or both sessions to try out various ways to embellish paper or fabric with a needle\, thread\, and other textile materials. \nGuest Artist: Breanna Robinson\nSewing on paper is a fun and easy way to add extra dimension\, texture\, and allure to prints\, drawings\, and cards. For people who love process\, the act of sewing can bring an extra step of loving care to existing creation. Hand sewing on blank paper can also be used to create fully thread-based work.  \nArtist Breanna Robinson and owner of Nanette Home “Exquisite Cushions” uses embroidery\, trim\, beads\, and other embellishments to add sculptural elements and sensory appeal to her works on paper. At this Drink & Draw\, she will share simple embellishing  techniques for use on paper\, including basic decorative stitches  and how to add decorative borders\, bling\, and imagery. No prior sewing experience is necessary\, just some kind of needle and thread and the paper you would like to embellish. Join us for one or both sessions to explore perspective\, geometry\, scale\, maps\, schematics\, and try out unconventional ways of rendering spaces\, both real and imagined. \nGuest Artist: Ann Toebbe\nJoin artist Ann Toebbe to see how she creates her signature drawings and paintings. Partly an exercise in drafting\, and partly a reflection of your own memory\, you will create a domestic interior of a familiar\, beloved\, or important room. These architectural renderings do not require any formal drawing skills; all forms of representation are welcome for these invented spaces informed by your memories!
