SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Fhdydyejdvubsjwv Enchanted: Idea Generating & Digital Collage
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Erin Hayden\nArtist and poet Erin Hayden will help us tap into our unconscious by exploiting the randomness of technology to create unplanned—and unplannable—works of art. We’ll start with collaborative and often hilarious writing exercises\, as well as automatic writing and the auto-fill feature\, to inspire\, generating content\, and guide our digital collage making. Looking together at found images\, we’ll use drawing as a way of “note-taking” for new marks and visual ideas that we can add to our  compositions. You can create your collage using free software (as well as “analog” materials) or watch along as Erin shares her own process and methods in Photoshop to create an original artwork with us. \nErin Hayden is an interdisciplinary artist predominantly working in painting\, performance\, poetry\, video\, and installation. Her work has been exhibited in various cities across the US and abroad including at Stony Island Arts Bank\, and Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Torino. Solo exhibitions of her paintings and video work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, and Randy Alexander Gallery. She has been an artist resident at the Ragdale Foundation\, the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity\, Chicago Artists Coalition\, and is a Luminarts Fellow. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artists: Lucia Calderon-Arrieta and Anders Zanichkowsky\nTips to be split with The Love Fridge\nThe Chicago City budget is under scrutiny for the disproportionate level of funds invested in the police department ($1.7 Billion per year; 40% of the entire budget*). How might art\, writing\, and poetry help us envision other ways to invest in our city and the citizens of Chicago? What would the city look like if you were in charge of where to invest resources? \nMaybe you want to explore a future with funds reallocated to things like housing\, health care\, and education. Maybe you want to explore more fantastical or playful futures; or your own unique take on urban planning. What inventive community resources would you like to see our city invest in?  \nThis kind of collective imagining is a powerful and necessary tool for conjuring a new reality that could make policing obsolete. Not from Chicago? Please join us to work on a new vision for your own community that centers the margins and allows everyone to thrive! \nAnders Zanichkowsky will lead us in some word-mapping exercises to write our way to a different future\, and Lucia Calderon-Arrieta will guide drawing activities that illustrate our new visions. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Robert Stokowy\nHow can a drawing convey a sound?\nHow might a drawing double as a score for music?\nHow can the act of listening open up new creativity in your art practice? \nRobert Stokowy invites you to slow down and tune in to your auditory imagination\, to inspire unexpected drawings based on sound art he will share with us. We will also look at contemporary artists who create visual art based on sound\, and vice versa. Starting with recordings from the medieval city of Malta\, Robert will inspire us with a rich collection of abstract and ambient sounds\, tones\, and textures from his own field recordings. Analog sound effects will include a live composition he will mix live for us during the event. \nRobert believes that deep listening can be a clarifying and generative part of the artistic practice\, and that we all have an intuitive ability to make creative associations between sounds and images. By breaking a soundscape down into simple shapes\, lines\, textures\, and relationships\, we can open up a new visual vocabulary. SUMMARY:Printmaking Inside the Prison Industrial Complex
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist Talk with Aaron Hughes\, William Estrada\, & Sarah Ross\n\nResident Artist Aaron Hughes is an artist\, curator\, organizer\, teacher\, anti-war activist\, and Iraq War veteran. He is also an educator with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (P+NAP) where he and his colleagues William Estrada and Sarah Ross have taught printmaking to people incarcerated at Stateville Prison.  \nDuring this virtual talk\, these three artists will discuss both the power of printmaking for individuals in prison\, and the limitations of art education within the larger prison system. \nThey will also present P+NAP’s newest publication\, Carving Out Rights from Inside the Prison Industrial Complex (Hat & Beard Press). The book features 30 brilliantly crafted foam block prints— one for each article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights— made by artists at Stateville Prison whose daily struggle for their own human rights is even more pronounced during a global pandemic in which they are denied basic PPE\, healthcare\, and safety. For people who love process\, the act of sewing can bring an extra step of loving care to existing creation. Hand sewing on blank paper can also be used to create fully thread-based work.  \nArtist Breanna Robinson and owner of Nanette Home “Exquisite Cushions” uses embroidery\, trim\, beads\, and other embellishments to add sculptural elements and sensory appeal to her works on paper. At this Drink & Draw\, she will share simple embellishing  techniques for use on paper\, including basic decorative stitches  and how to add decorative borders\, bling\, and imagery. DESCRIPTION:Free for Spudnik Press members (Member Online RSVP)\n$10 for the General Public (General Online Registration)\nStudents & artists with financial need can enter our lottery for a free ticket\n\nUnlike the typical lecture\, this event is inspired by the “Ask Me Anything” threads popularized through Reddit and offers a chance for our members to guide the conversation with Margo McFarland\, an art conservator who specializes in the conservation and preservation of works of art on paper and the material science of art objects. \nOver the course of her career\, Margo has worked at the Baltimore Museum of Art\, the Phillips Collection\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Library of Congress\, The LA County Museum of Art\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, the St. Louis Art Museum\, and the Smithsonian Institutions. She spent six months in Buenos Aires as an awardee of a Fulbright Lecturing Fellowship in the area of Cultural Preservation/Museology. Margo is a specialist in cellulosic chemistry\, papermaking\, fine art print production\, and preservation standards for works of art on paper. She has lectured widely in these areas of expertise\, in countries as far-reaching as Mexico\, Spain\, China\, France\, and Austria. \nDuring this presentation\, Margo will discuss works that she has treated (including those by Rembrandt\, Van Gogh\, Toulouse-Lautrec\, Martin Puryear\, and Ed Paschke).  She will also show examples of her own print production–both her successes and her failures.  \nAfter hearing stories from Margo’s experiences conserving print over the years\, we will discuss how and why media\, technique\, and choosing the right paper matters when it comes to pulling perfect prints. The second portion of the event will be led by audience questions. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for artist-led gallery hours for The Hunger Will Wake Us: Hope Wang & Farnaz Khosh-Sirat. \nThis exhibition brings together new print work from Hope Wang and Farnaz Khosh-Sirat\, who each explore the translational process of materializing digital animations and poetry text into print. Yasaman Moussavi will demonstrate making pulp out of scrap paper\, dyeing pulps\, and creating color sheets. \nYasaman Moussavi is a visual artist and art instructor. She holds an MFA with two emphases on Painting and Printmaking from Texas Tech University\, where she explored and developed her skills in papermaking\, printmaking\, and installation art. In her art practice research\, she explores the socio-cultural in-betweenness as a capacity and disposition to participate in meaning-making across cultures and languages. For her\, transitional spaces are the performative embodiment of spatial mapping and in-betweenness.  Her works have been displayed in many national and international solo and group exhibitions such as Juried International Exhibition of Contemporary Art\, Irving Art Center\, TX and A.I.R Gallery Biennial\, Brooklyn\, NY\, among others. She is a co-founder of Didaar Art Collective\, a Chicago -based Iranian art community. SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Salvaging Scraps
DESCRIPTION:This July\, our Drink & Draw projects dedicated to all the leftover fragments\, or “chads”. First\, we’ll put to use all the excess bits and pieces from other projects. Then\, we’ll replenish our paper remnants by trying out the art of papercutting. \nGuest Artist: Mara Baker\nSave your scraps for a night of collage with our Resident Artist\, Mara Baker! Mara’s artistic practice explores the intersection of impermanence and regeneration. By reusing remnants from other projects\, she gives new life to discarded bits and pieces like yarn\, labels\, twist ties\, and packaging like mesh produce bags. \nInspired by stop-motion animation\, we will explore intuitive ways to make (and remake) collages. By documenting collages as they develop\, we will be able to think about collaging as a form of choreography and organization.  \nFor this workshop\, no scrap is too small or strange. Gather up materials from the studio\, the kitchen\, the office\, and even past Drink & Draw events and come ready for playful experimentation.  \nSuggested Materials:\n\nGlue\, glue stick\, or tape \nPaper scraps\nFound bits & pieces (i.e. produce stickers\, stamps\, packaging\, tin foil\, etc.)\nCamera (i.e. cell phone)\n\nOptional Materials:\n\nScissors or exacto knife\nPaper to mount collage onto\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 93223199392\n\nDrink & Draw [VIRTUAL] is a low-key drop-in workshop devoted to staying creative from home.
