DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lindi Shi\nThe “Flag Book” is fascinating\, impressive\, and easy-to-learn handmade book! It is one of Lindi Shi’s favorite artist book forms because it can be read as a drawing\, a sculpture\, or an installation. She will teach you how to fold\, cut\, and assemble your own flag books out of any paper materials you want to use. This simple variation of the accordion book form incorporates cut-out “flag” pages\, and has the potential to be transformed into more complicated structures once you understand the basics. DESCRIPTION:Staff Led: Anders Zanichkowsky\nMuch like printmaking\, the process of weaving uses structure\, order\, and repetition to produce beautiful and unique imagery. We often think of weaving things like cloth\, rugs\, and baskets\, but you can also make weavings from things like drawings\, letters and mail\, magazines\, and wrapping paper? Anders Zanichkowsky will show you how to create both flat and dimensional pieces that combine colors\, patterns\, textures\, and images in unexpected ways using basic hand woven structures. SUMMARY:Printmaking Inside the Prison Industrial Complex
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist Talk with Aaron Hughes\, William Estrada\, & Sarah Ross\n\nResident Artist Aaron Hughes is an artist\, curator\, organizer\, teacher\, anti-war activist\, and Iraq War veteran. He is also an educator with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (P+NAP) where he and his colleagues William Estrada and Sarah Ross have taught printmaking to people incarcerated at Stateville Prison.  \nDuring this virtual talk\, these three artists will discuss both the power of printmaking for individuals in prison\, and the limitations of art education within the larger prison system. \nThey will also present P+NAP’s newest publication\, Carving Out Rights from Inside the Prison Industrial Complex (Hat & Beard Press). The book features 30 brilliantly crafted foam block prints— one for each article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights— made by artists at Stateville Prison whose daily struggle for their own human rights is even more pronounced during a global pandemic in which they are denied basic PPE\, healthcare\, and safety. For people who love process\, the act of sewing can bring an extra step of loving care to existing creation. Hand sewing on blank paper can also be used to create fully thread-based work.  \nArtist Breanna Robinson and owner of Nanette Home “Exquisite Cushions” uses embroidery\, trim\, beads\, and other embellishments to add sculptural elements and sensory appeal to her works on paper. At this Drink & Draw\, she will share simple embellishing  techniques for use on paper\, including basic decorative stitches  and how to add decorative borders\, bling\, and imagery. DESCRIPTION:Free for Spudnik Press members (Member Online RSVP)\n$10 for the General Public (General Online Registration)\nStudents & artists with financial need can enter our lottery for a free ticket\n\nUnlike the typical lecture\, this event is inspired by the “Ask Me Anything” threads popularized through Reddit and offers a chance for our members to guide the conversation with Margo McFarland\, an art conservator who specializes in the conservation and preservation of works of art on paper and the material science of art objects. \nOver the course of her career\, Margo has worked at the Baltimore Museum of Art\, the Phillips Collection\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Library of Congress\, The LA County Museum of Art\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, the St. Louis Art Museum\, and the Smithsonian Institutions. She spent six months in Buenos Aires as an awardee of a Fulbright Lecturing Fellowship in the area of Cultural Preservation/Museology. Margo is a specialist in cellulosic chemistry\, papermaking\, fine art print production\, and preservation standards for works of art on paper. She has lectured widely in these areas of expertise\, in countries as far-reaching as Mexico\, Spain\, China\, France\, and Austria. \nDuring this presentation\, Margo will discuss works that she has treated (including those by Rembrandt\, Van Gogh\, Toulouse-Lautrec\, Martin Puryear\, and Ed Paschke).  She will also show examples of her own print production–both her successes and her failures.  \nAfter hearing stories from Margo’s experiences conserving print over the years\, we will discuss how and why media\, technique\, and choosing the right paper matters when it comes to pulling perfect prints. The second portion of the event will be led by audience questions. Rather than describing an existing physical environment or architecture\, she will start with abstraction to picture alternative forms of constructing space. Working backwards\, we will start by drawing “accidental schematics” using geometry\, chance\, and intuition for something that may or may not correspond to a logical reality. \nWe’ll ask\, “What if this was a plan for a building? A city? A safe passage across the ocean?” Then with a second drawing\, we’ll translate the abstractions into a map or plan for a physical space. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for artist-led gallery hours for The Hunger Will Wake Us: Hope Wang & Farnaz Khosh-Sirat. \nThis exhibition brings together new print work from Hope Wang and Farnaz Khosh-Sirat\, who each explore the translational process of materializing digital animations and poetry text into print. Together they reflect on events of displacement through the metaphor of simultaneously losing and finding new meaning and new form via the act of translation. \nHope Wang uses printmaking\, handweaving\, painting\, and photography to reimagine spatial association and visual perception. Wang references the architectural landscape as a malleable document of visual language where building facades become eroded\, redacted\, and defaced. Farnaz Khosh-Sirat is an Iranian light artist whose work employs digital tools to enhance human experiences of the sublime. Through the use of Persian architectural structures and patterns\, Khosh-Sirat personifies human fragility in the contrasting positions between man and nature. \nBy reconfiguring fragments of hyper-specific architectural details\, their works become “false” copies and traces of their constructed memories. SUMMARY:Virtual Workshop: Painting with Pulp
DESCRIPTION:Pulp Painting is an emerging specialty that attracts visual artists’ attention. Artists\, printmakers\, painters\, book artists\, installation artists\, and people who love to make creative work will enjoy this one-day workshop. In this workshop\, students will learn how to freely made paintings with dyed pulp. Yasaman Moussavi will demonstrate making pulp out of scrap paper\, dyeing pulps\, and creating color sheets. \nYasaman Moussavi is a visual artist and art instructor. She holds an MFA with two emphases on Painting and Printmaking from Texas Tech University\, where she explored and developed her skills in papermaking\, printmaking\, and installation art. In her art practice research\, she explores the socio-cultural in-betweenness as a capacity and disposition to participate in meaning-making across cultures and languages. For her\, transitional spaces are the performative embodiment of spatial mapping and in-betweenness.  Her works have been displayed in many national and international solo and group exhibitions such as Juried International Exhibition of Contemporary Art\, Irving Art Center\, TX and A.I.R Gallery Biennial\, Brooklyn\, NY\, among others. She is a co-founder of Didaar Art Collective\, a Chicago -based Iranian art community. Mara’s artistic practice explores the intersection of impermanence and regeneration. Then\, we’ll replenish our paper remnants by trying out the art of papercutting. \nGuest Artist: Yang Pulongbarit-Cuevo\nThe art of paper cutting has been practiced around the globe for over a thousand years\, from the Philippines to Mexico to Switzerland. The art form is recognized for its intricate designs and illustrations cut from a single sheet of paper. \nYang Pulongbarit-Cuevo has been cutting paper for many years and is best known for her intricate maps and personalized text-based designs. Yang will share some of her favorite projects in order to help us design our own image using only the positive and negative space of a single sheet of paper.  \nWe will practice some basic knife skills with an introductory project. Then everyone will move on to create a greeting card\, an ornament\, or a mini poster. SUMMARY:Diasporic Foodways + Remembrance: Participatory Artist Talk with Alexandra Antoine
DESCRIPTION:Resident Artist Alexandra Antoine will present the research and inspiration behind her practice that has led her down the path of culinary anthropology. In her artist talk\, she will discuss her new set of collages screenprinted during her residency entitled “i followed the drinking gourd and it led me to myself/love/healing/community.” \nPart artist talk and part participatory conversation\, Alexandra will also lead a group conversation that examines how the foods that are important to us can be used as tools to help navigate our future paths. Attendees are encouraged to come with a food in mind that they love or have deep memories of\, as Alexandra will lead an exercise rooted in how she started her current line of research in culinary anthropology. \nSpudnik’s Program Lead\, Grace Makuch\, will moderate a Q&A following the participatory artist talk where guests will be encouraged to share their questions. \nAlexandra Antoine is an interdisciplinary visual artist and cultural apprentice based in Chicago\, IL. Her work acknowledges the influences of her Haitian culture and interest in portraiture\, food\, farming and physical labor in traditional artistic practices of the African diaspora. She honors the different forms and functions of her work in the process of her vision coming into fruition. We will be working through modern renditions of this artistic style featuring the classic elements of nature and floral patterns depicted through soft colors and curvy\, botanical shapes.  \nGuest Artist: Grace Makuch\nOriginating in France during the 1730s\, Rococo was an artistic style that sought to push the boundaries of the formal and geometric decorative style during that time. As an homage to that exceptionally ornamental style\, Grace Makuch will walk us through a modern approach to Rococo by applying it’s whimsical design to clothing. For this event\, she will be sharing the ornamental\, abstracted elements of her artist practice by cutting out botanic shapes drawn on contact paper\, applying them to t-shirts\, and then bleaching those shapes into the fabric through bleach painting and drawing with bleach pens. Participants will be emailed the Zoom link the day of the event. \nUnlike the typical lecture\, this event is inspired by the “Ask Me Anything” threads popularized through Reddit and offers a chance for our members to guide the conversation with guest artist Dan S. Wang. \nDan is an artist and writer living in Los Angeles. His current obsessions include histories of monetary policy\, and the afterlives of the French Revolution. Recent projects include commissioned work for Station Museum (Houston) and Asian Arts Initiative (Philadelphia). He often has worked in collaborative situations\, as in the past as a founding keyholder of Mess Hall\, an experimental cultural space in Chicago\, to a present day collaborative vehicle\, Now-Time Asian America. His critical writings have been published internationally in book collections\, museum catalogs and in dozens of artists publications. He holds an undergraduate degree in Religion and an MFA in Printmaking. Since 2019 he has been a Resident Artist at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. \nDan will talk about his work\, A Ragbox of Overstood Grammars\, a twenty-year retrospective of eighty-plus letterpress prints. This archive-in-a-box includes prints\, posters\, bookmarks\, stickers\, broadsides\, menus\, and napkins made under the imprint Propositions Press\, and was last displayed in 2020 at Fonderie Darling in Montreal. Dan assembled the box as a way to mark the years in which letterpress printing was his most steady studio craft\, a period that is now over. In addition to covering the work\, he will reflect on what it means to make such a break in one’s artistic arc. \nAfter hearing stories from Dan’s experiences surrounding letterpress over the years\, the second portion of the event will be led by audience questions. Spudnik’s Program Lead\, Grace Makuch\, will moderate a Q&A where guests are encouraged to share their questions for Dan\, big and small about his career\, interests\, and experience with letterpress. \n\n\nThis event is for everyone!
