SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Paper Cut Arts
DESCRIPTION:This July\, our Drink & Draw projects dedicated to all the leftover fragments\, or “chads”. First\, we’ll put to use all the excess bits and pieces from other projects. Then\, we’ll replenish our paper remnants by trying out the art of papercutting. \nGuest Artist: Yang Pulongbarit-Cuevo\nThe art of paper cutting has been practiced around the globe for over a thousand years\, from the Philippines to Mexico to Switzerland. The art form is recognized for its intricate designs and illustrations cut from a single sheet of paper. \nYang Pulongbarit-Cuevo has been cutting paper for many years and is best known for her intricate maps and personalized text-based designs. Yang will share some of her favorite projects in order to help us design our own image using only the positive and negative space of a single sheet of paper.  \nWe will practice some basic knife skills with an introductory project. Then everyone will move on to create a greeting card\, an ornament\, or a mini poster. SUMMARY:Diasporic Foodways + Remembrance: Participatory Artist Talk with Alexandra Antoine
DESCRIPTION:Resident Artist Alexandra Antoine will present the research and inspiration behind her practice that has led her down the path of culinary anthropology. In her artist talk\, she will discuss her new set of collages screenprinted during her residency entitled “i followed the drinking gourd and it led me to myself/love/healing/community.” \nPart artist talk and part participatory conversation\, Alexandra will also lead a group conversation that examines how the foods that are important to us can be used as tools to help navigate our future paths. Attendees are encouraged to come with a food in mind that they love or have deep memories of\, as Alexandra will lead an exercise rooted in how she started her current line of research in culinary anthropology. \nSpudnik’s Program Lead\, Grace Makuch\, will moderate a Q&A following the participatory artist talk where guests will be encouraged to share their questions. \nAlexandra Antoine is an interdisciplinary visual artist and cultural apprentice based in Chicago\, IL. Her work acknowledges the influences of her Haitian culture and interest in portraiture\, food\, farming and physical labor in traditional artistic practices of the African diaspora. She honors the different forms and functions of her work in the process of her vision coming into fruition. She received her Bachelors in Fine Arts and Arts Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. DESCRIPTION:This September\, Drink & Draw explores Rococo! We will be working through modern renditions of this artistic style featuring the classic elements of nature and floral patterns depicted through soft colors and curvy\, botanical shapes.  \nGuest Artist: Grace Makuch\nOriginating in France during the 1730s\, Rococo was an artistic style that sought to push the boundaries of the formal and geometric decorative style during that time. As an homage to that exceptionally ornamental style\, Grace Makuch will walk us through a modern approach to Rococo by applying it’s whimsical design to clothing. For this event\, she will be sharing the ornamental\, abstracted elements of her artist practice by cutting out botanic shapes drawn on contact paper\, applying them to t-shirts\, and then bleaching those shapes into the fabric through bleach painting and drawing with bleach pens. Taylor Augustine will be sharing her passion for nature and leading us through the art of Bundle Dyeing: a holistic\, magical approach to fabric patterning. DESCRIPTION:This October\, Drink & Draw explores Character Creation. Alongside this month’s guest artists\, learn two unique approaches to developing imaginative characters for your next puppet play or comic book. \nGuest Artist: Myra Su\nAs one of the oldest forms of puppetry\, paper and shadow puppets have delighted and entertained for hundreds of years. Myra Su will be walking us through engineering expressive paper puppets using everyday recycled materials. She will be sharing techniques from her many years as a touring puppeteer with Manual Cinema\, as well as from her most recent puppet film\, GOODNIGHT SHADOW\, that features articulated paper doll-like puppets. Together\, we’ll explore both shadow puppets that focus on expressive silhouettes as well as paper puppets with hand drawn features.  \nJoin us for this fun mid-week break to build your own cast of characters for a magical at home shadow play. Participants will be emailed the Zoom link the day of the event. \nUnlike the typical lecture\, this event is inspired by the “Ask Me Anything” threads popularized through Reddit and offers a chance for our members to guide the conversation with guest artist Dan S. Wang. \nDan is an artist and writer living in Los Angeles. His current obsessions include histories of monetary policy\, and the afterlives of the French Revolution. Recent projects include commissioned work for Station Museum (Houston) and Asian Arts Initiative (Philadelphia). He often has worked in collaborative situations\, as in the past as a founding keyholder of Mess Hall\, an experimental cultural space in Chicago\, to a present day collaborative vehicle\, Now-Time Asian America. His critical writings have been published internationally in book collections\, museum catalogs and in dozens of artists publications. He holds an undergraduate degree in Religion and an MFA in Printmaking. Since 2019 he has been a Resident Artist at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. \nDan will talk about his work\, A Ragbox of Overstood Grammars\, a twenty-year retrospective of eighty-plus letterpress prints. This archive-in-a-box includes prints\, posters\, bookmarks\, stickers\, broadsides\, menus\, and napkins made under the imprint Propositions Press\, and was last displayed in 2020 at Fonderie Darling in Montreal. Dan assembled the box as a way to mark the years in which letterpress printing was his most steady studio craft\, a period that is now over. In addition to covering the work\, he will reflect on what it means to make such a break in one’s artistic arc. \nAfter hearing stories from Dan’s experiences surrounding letterpress over the years\, the second portion of the event will be led by audience questions. Spudnik’s Program Lead\, Grace Makuch\, will moderate a Q&A where guests are encouraged to share their questions for Dan\, big and small about his career\, interests\, and experience with letterpress. \n\n\nThis event is for everyone! Alongside our guest artists\, attendees will explore various collage techniques using hand-drawn elements\, found material\, and magazines. \nGuest Artist: Kelly Reaves\nCollage arts can be traced back hundreds of years but made a novel entrance into the art scene during the early 20th century. DESCRIPTION:We hope to see you at our last Drink & Draw event of the year! \nGuest Artist: Anna Mielniczuk\nTaking inspiration from surrealist party games\, this week’s Drink & Draw event will guide us through a series of creative prompts and exercises in order to send a memory to a friend with a handmade postcard.  \nOur guest artist\, Anna Mielniczuk\, will combine free writing and free drawing activities inspired by the sights\, sounds\, and smells of the warm summer months\, and the friends we’ve shared summer memories with. Through these question-based exercises\, we’ll flex our intuition and creative thinking and develop an image bank that we can use for our postcards. Plus\, there will be an opportunity to hand make an accompanying envelope.  \nFor this project\, Anna will be primarily working with colored construction paper\, cardstock\, and markers but participants are welcome to work with whatever materials they have on hand. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Millicent Kennedy\nMillicent Kennedy uses mark making\, embroidery\, and sewing as a way to remember and to honor people\, memories\, and items. We invite you to join us for a creative project in which we will uplift a broken item\, a piece of litter\, or another small memento you’d like to remember. Any object that is treasured\, aesthetically pleasing\, or otherwise interesting to you is perfect. Feel free to bring detritus from your neighborhood\, a family heirloom\, or a keepsake from a nature walk.  \nAlongside our featured artist\, participants will take time to look closely at their chosen object\, and to create a composition that highlights its shape and form.  Millicent will share how she creates hand quilted wall hangings with small objects using fabric and thread. Attendees are welcome to follow along with a thread and needle\, or create a hand-drawn version using a silhouette of their cherished item. \nFor those who would like to sew their item into an artwork\, please select a small object (under 6” x 6”) and two pieces of fabric. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Due to health & safety concerns there will be no public event. The Pop-Up Exhibition will be on display from February 8th to March 15th.\nPlease check back for updates on the zine release\nJust the Essentials a pop-up exhibition\, a release party for a collaborative zine by the same name\, and a culminating celebration for Spudnik Press Fellowship artists\, Cam Collins\, Kirstin Dunlap\, Kyle Dunlap\, Alex Fox and Yu Wei. \nThis zine\, Just the Essentials\, is a collaboration among these five artists\, who each contributed pages prompted by grocery lists. The culminating risograph publication includes a combination of styles highlighting each artist and their creative response to the prompt. During this release event only\, Just the Essentials will be free while supplies last. \nIn addition to the zine release\, the Annex gallery space will feature new work by each artist created during their 2021 fellowship at Spudnik Press. Artwork on display will include publications\, photo-based work\, sculpture\, and prints.   \nThe exhibition will celebrate each artist’s artistic growth during their time in the Spudnik Press Fellowship program as well as their collaborative achievements. \n\nPer our Covid-19 Policy\, all visitors who are eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine must provide staff with proof of vaccination in order to gain entry to Spudnik Press Cooperative. For public events that do not require registration\, guests can present proof of vaccination in person upon entry. Unless specifically requested\, proof of vaccination presented at public events will not be kept on file. Medical and religious exemptions must be requested in advance.

SUMMARY:Ukraine\, Callot\, and Picturing War
DESCRIPTION:Join Resident Artist\, Cameron Mankin\, for a conversation about Regarding Ukraine\, a new series of copper etchings created at Spudnik Press Cooperative. Part artist talk and part research presentation\, this virtual lecture re-presents work by Jacques Callot in the context of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.  \nIn 1633\, printmaker Jacques Callot made his Miseries of War – a series of 18 etchings depicting the invasion of his home\, Lorraine\, that would go on to inspire the works of artists like Francisco Goya and Otto Dix. At the same time\, he was developing an incredibly rigid system of etching\, preserved in Abraham Bosse’s Manual of Etching. \nRegarding Ukraine applies Callot’s etching system to news images circulating today in order to ask what the connection is between this influential 17th century French etcher and contemporary work-for-hire news photography. This series explores the way images shape our perception of the public sphere and current events\, and the often overlooked systems of design that are employed to do so. \nZoom Meeting ID: 836 5660 6314\nArtist Bio\nCameron Mankin makes prints\, artist’s books\, and sculptural installations that investigate the role of reason and rhetoric in the arrangement of public space and personal identity. Working primarily from found archives (news site banner images\, apartment floor plans\, and grainy security camera footage)\, he employs traditional print and bookmaking techniques to approach delicate systemic problems with a tongue-in-cheek rigor. The material properties of paper and ink set measurements and catalogs to collapse under their own unwieldy weight. The resulting projects vibrate between love letter and biting rebuttal – both addressed to vernacular image-making that goes unquestioned in our day to day lives. \nMankin received his BA in Studio Art (Printmaking) from the University of Virginia in 2016 and his MFA from the University of Chicago in 2020. DESCRIPTION:Join multi-disciplinary artist and educator\, Hale Ekinci\, for her artist talk featuring recent works created during her Artist Residency at Spudnik. Hale’s research includes exploring the meaning behind visual patterns often found in Ottoman and Turkish textiles\, tiles\, and clothing as well as photographic archives\, especially of immigrants in both the US and Turkey. Using the found motifs\, she creates silent stories on both paper and found house textiles. In this interactive talk\, she will share her research\, her in progress work\, process\, and traditions. She encourages the audience to participate with their own motifs and family stories. \nThis is an in-person event\, masks and proof of vaccination are required. To ensure capacity limits\, we are requiring advanced registration.\nRSVP by September 6\, 2022\nArtist Bio\nHale Ekinci (b. 1984 in Karamursel\, Turkey) is a multidisciplinary Turkish artist\, designer\, and educator based in Chicago.  She received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts & Media at Columbia College Chicago and is currently an Associate Professor of Art & Design at North Central College. Exploring personal history\, cultural identity\, gender politics\, and craft traditions\, her works vary from videos to embroidery paintings embellished with vibrant colors\, patterns\, and autobiographical relics. She was recently a Facebook Chicago Artist in Resident. Her work has been exhibited nationally at EXPO Chicago\, Studio Gang\, Co-Prosperity\, One After 909\, Woman Made Gallery\, South Bend Museum of Art\, Koehnline Museum of Art\, St. Louis Artists’ Guild\, and Queens College Art Center. Her videos have been screened internationally\, including New York City\, Berlin\, Warsaw\, and Jerusalem. She completed residencies at ACRE\, Jiwar Barcelona\, Momentum Worldwide Berlin\, Elsewhere Museum\, and Chicago Artist Coalition.  \nThe 2022 Residency Program is possible with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts Arts Work Grant.
