SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Revived Relics
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Millicent Kennedy\nMillicent Kennedy uses mark making\, embroidery\, and sewing as a way to remember and to honor people\, memories\, and items. We invite you to join us for a creative project in which we will uplift a broken item\, a piece of litter\, or another small memento you’d like to remember. Any object that is treasured\, aesthetically pleasing\, or otherwise interesting to you is perfect. Feel free to bring detritus from your neighborhood\, a family heirloom\, or a keepsake from a nature walk.  \nAlongside our featured artist\, participants will take time to look closely at their chosen object\, and to create a composition that highlights its shape and form.  Millicent will share how she creates hand quilted wall hangings with small objects using fabric and thread. Attendees are welcome to follow along with a thread and needle\, or create a hand-drawn version using a silhouette of their cherished item. \nFor those who would like to sew their item into an artwork\, please select a small object (under 6” x 6”) and two pieces of fabric. SUMMARY:Just the Essentials: Zine Release & Pop-Up Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Due to health & safety concerns there will be no public event. The Pop-Up Exhibition will be on display from February 8th to March 15th.\nPlease check back for updates on the zine release\nJust the Essentials a pop-up exhibition\, a release party for a collaborative zine by the same name\, and a culminating celebration for Spudnik Press Fellowship artists\, Cam Collins\, Kirstin Dunlap\, Kyle Dunlap\, Alex Fox and Yu Wei. \nThis zine\, Just the Essentials\, is a collaboration among these five artists\, who each contributed pages prompted by grocery lists. The culminating risograph publication includes a combination of styles highlighting each artist and their creative response to the prompt. During this release event only\, Just the Essentials will be free while supplies last. \nIn addition to the zine release\, the Annex gallery space will feature new work by each artist created during their 2021 fellowship at Spudnik Press. Artwork on display will include publications\, photo-based work\, sculpture\, and prints.   \nThe exhibition will celebrate each artist’s artistic growth during their time in the Spudnik Press Fellowship program as well as their collaborative achievements. \n\nPer our Covid-19 Policy\, all visitors who are eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine must provide staff with proof of vaccination in order to gain entry to Spudnik Press Cooperative. For public events that do not require registration\, guests can present proof of vaccination in person upon entry. Unless specifically requested\, proof of vaccination presented at public events will not be kept on file. Medical and religious exemptions must be requested in advance.

SUMMARY:Ukraine\, Callot\, and Picturing War
DESCRIPTION:Join Resident Artist\, Cameron Mankin\, for a conversation about Regarding Ukraine\, a new series of copper etchings created at Spudnik Press Cooperative. Part artist talk and part research presentation\, this virtual lecture re-presents work by Jacques Callot in the context of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.  \nIn 1633\, printmaker Jacques Callot made his Miseries of War – a series of 18 etchings depicting the invasion of his home\, Lorraine\, that would go on to inspire the works of artists like Francisco Goya and Otto Dix. At the same time\, he was developing an incredibly rigid system of etching\, preserved in Abraham Bosse’s Manual of Etching. \nRegarding Ukraine applies Callot’s etching system to news images circulating today in order to ask what the connection is between this influential 17th century French etcher and contemporary work-for-hire news photography. This series explores the way images shape our perception of the public sphere and current events\, and the often overlooked systems of design that are employed to do so. \nZoom Meeting ID: 836 5660 6314\nArtist Bio\nCameron Mankin makes prints\, artist’s books\, and sculptural installations that investigate the role of reason and rhetoric in the arrangement of public space and personal identity. Working primarily from found archives (news site banner images\, apartment floor plans\, and grainy security camera footage)\, he employs traditional print and bookmaking techniques to approach delicate systemic problems with a tongue-in-cheek rigor. The material properties of paper and ink set measurements and catalogs to collapse under their own unwieldy weight. The resulting projects vibrate between love letter and biting rebuttal – both addressed to vernacular image-making that goes unquestioned in our day to day lives. \nMankin received his BA in Studio Art (Printmaking) from the University of Virginia in 2016 and his MFA from the University of Chicago in 2020. SUMMARY:Motif: Unspoken Language | Artist Talk with Hale Ekinci
DESCRIPTION:Join multi-disciplinary artist and educator\, Hale Ekinci\, for her artist talk featuring recent works created during her Artist Residency at Spudnik. Hale’s research includes exploring the meaning behind visual patterns often found in Ottoman and Turkish textiles\, tiles\, and clothing as well as photographic archives\, especially of immigrants in both the US and Turkey. Using the found motifs\, she creates silent stories on both paper and found house textiles. In this interactive talk\, she will share her research\, her in progress work\, process\, and traditions. She encourages the audience to participate with their own motifs and family stories. \nThis is an in-person event\, masks and proof of vaccination are required. To ensure capacity limits\, we are requiring advanced registration.\nRSVP by September 6\, 2022\nArtist Bio\nHale Ekinci (b. 1984 in Karamursel\, Turkey) is a multidisciplinary Turkish artist\, designer\, and educator based in Chicago.  She received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts & Media at Columbia College Chicago and is currently an Associate Professor of Art & Design at North Central College. Exploring personal history\, cultural identity\, gender politics\, and craft traditions\, her works vary from videos to embroidery paintings embellished with vibrant colors\, patterns\, and autobiographical relics. She was recently a Facebook Chicago Artist in Resident. Her work has been exhibited nationally at EXPO Chicago\, Studio Gang\, Co-Prosperity\, One After 909\, Woman Made Gallery\, South Bend Museum of Art\, Koehnline Museum of Art\, St. Louis Artists’ Guild\, and Queens College Art Center. Her videos have been screened internationally\, including New York City\, Berlin\, Warsaw\, and Jerusalem. She completed residencies at ACRE\, Jiwar Barcelona\, Momentum Worldwide Berlin\, Elsewhere Museum\, and Chicago Artist Coalition.  \nThe 2022 Residency Program is possible with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts Arts Work Grant.

SUMMARY:Fallout [from Temporary] Shelter | Virtual Artist Talk with Adriane Herman
DESCRIPTION:2022 Spudnik artist-in-residence\, Adriane Herman\, will offer a virtual talk about her work through the lens of the influence(s) and impact(s) of residencies undertaken in four countries. Herman will trace the lineage of major bodies of her work as instigated in ways large and small by people\, places and things encountered through the privileges afforded one by stepping out of daily routines\, comfort zones and habitual making processes.  \nDuring her two weeks at Spudnik this Summer\, Herman made a slew of prints inspired by non-adhered collages\, or “arrangements\,” as she describes them\, that she created during a public engagement-based 2019 residency at the Tides Institute in Eastport\, Maine. She will show editioned prints created on our Vandercook SP-25 with expert assistance from UW Madison print professor and former head printer at Tandem Press\, Andy Rubin\, as well as myriad call-and-response monoprints on antique musical scores\, some of which Herman made in collaboration with long-time Spudnik community members\, Dutes Miller & Stan Shellabarger.  \nHerman will conclude the talk by introducing the concept behind her Emotional Value Auction \, the sixth iteration of which will focus on art + craft supplies as well as unfinished projects people wish to but could use a nudge to help release to an appreciative receiver\, and take place October 22nd (more details to come). Herman invites participation in the form of releasing something taking up space in your studio you are unlikely to use and/or “bidding\,” which involves writing a statement of interest\, as no money changes hands. Another important form of participation is simply witnessing the process by reading the anonymous statements from releasers and telling others about this upcoming event and how to participate. \nRegister for this event through Eventbrite\nArtist Bio\nInefficiency expert\, Adriane Herman orchestrates witnessed releases — like her non-monetized “Emotional Value Auction” — to harness the power of witnessing to facilitate letting go; highlight the generosity inherent in receiving; and occasion meaningful connections between strangers through publicly shared vulnerability. She has utilized widely ranging print media to trace the alchemical trajectory from intention to action as well as explore accumulation and release in our physical and emotional landscapes. \nHerman has had solo exhibitions at Adam Baumgold Gallery (NY); Western Exhibitions (Chicago); Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art; Center for Maine Contemporary Art; Kiosk Gallery (Kansas City); and Rose Contemporary and SPEEDWELL Projects in Portland\, Maine. Her work is held in collections including The Whitney Museum of American Art; Bates College Museum of Art\, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art; The Walker Art Center; The Ulrich Museum; and Colby College Museum of Art. Pull sheets or use a deckle box to witness hydrogen bonds through paper production and leave with a sheet of handmade recycled denim paper to take home. Durational demonstration. Participants are asked to leave their wet sheets behind for the next person to take and leave with an already dry sheet made by the previous participants\, bonding us as a community. All labor is collective and paper making is a community practice. This demo will be held outdoors in the Hubbard Street Lofts parking lot. \nWatercolor Monotypes with Serena Hocharoen | 1pm \nIn this interactive demonstration\, participants will play with collage\, stencil\, and watercolor techniques to make painterly monoprint compositions with a variety of textures\, colors\, and layers. This demo will be held inside the studio\, masks are required.  \nPaper Marbling with Millicent Kennedy | 3pm \nVisitors are welcome to observe and participate in making marbled paper with Millicent. DESCRIPTION:Please join us in conversation with a panel of artists whose work uses narrative forms such as walks and book-making to explore the histories and stories residing in racially and culturally mixed landscapes. This event is in conjunction with Hui-min Tsen’s 2022 Spudnik Press Residency. Speakers joining Hui-min include artists JeeYeun Lee\, Alex Kostiw\, Regin Igloria\, and Nia Easley. \nThis event is free. Registration is appreciated here. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Panel: \n\n\nAlex Belardo Kostiw is an artist\, graphic designer\, and educator investigating the vast possibilities of the self\, the complexity of human connection\, and the nebulousness of reality. Their work deals in poetic\, adapted\, and iterative elements\, visual structures of comics\, and conceptually driven forms\, exploring ways to activate the reading experience\, construct myths\, and inhabit in-between spaces. Alex has an MFA in visual communication design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in English literature from the University of Chicago. Their work is collected in the Joan Flasch Artist’s Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Pratt Institute Artist’s Books Collection\, and National Museum of Women in the Arts\, among others.\n\n\n\nNia Easley is a Chicago-based artist\, designer\, researcher and educator. Those roles often intersect and overlap. She earned her MFA in Visual Communication Design and practices an art informed by methods of design production. This work engages the absurdity\, violence\, and beauty of contemporary American life\, focusing on our shared histories and how they have shaped the current landscape. She has taught workshops at Lekòl Kominotè Matènwa\, UIC (Gallery 400)\, and Yale University. Most recently she is a Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She also holds the role of contributing Editor/Curator for the EXIT section of Interactions (IX) Magazine. Her artist’s books can be found at the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection\, the University of Iowa\, Northwestern University\, and DePaul University. \nHui-min Tsen is a photo-based\, interdisciplinary artist whose projects tell stories about the interplay between the landscape of our imagination and the landscape as experienced in their physical form. Tsen received a BFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU\, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited and published with the Hyde Park Art Center\, Chicago Artist’s Coalition\, Graham Foundation\, and Sector 2337\, among others. Her book\, The Pedway of Today\, was published by Green Lantern Press in 2013. She teaches photography at Wright College. \nJeeYeun Lee is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago. Through performance\, objects\, and socially engaged art\, her work explores dynamics of connection\, power\, violence and resistance. Her current body of work uses walking as a medium to witness the ongoing structures of settler colonialism and racial capitalism in urban built environments. She has been awarded residencies from the Santa Fe Art Institute\, ACRE\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts\, and Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts\, and received grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\, Propeller Fund\, Puffin Foundation\, and Awesome Foundation (Chicago chapter). She has also worked with social justice and community-based organizations for over thirty years in immigrant rights\, economic justice\, LGBTQ issues\, and domestic violence. \nRegin Igloria is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Chicago. His drawings\, artists’ books\, sculptures\, and performances portray the human condition as it relates to the natural environment and inhabited spaces. With several years of arts administration and teaching experience\, he founded North Branch Projects\, an organization that builds connections through the book arts. He works with various communities to create crossover between disparate populations and cultures\, aiming to broaden the roles of both artists and non-artists. Igloria has taught at places such as Marwen\, RISD\, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Snow City Arts\, and Carthage College. He received a 3Arts Individual Artist Award as well as local\, national\, and international grants\, support through artist residencies\, and has exhibited internationally. DESCRIPTION:Join Switch Grass Paper at Spudnik Press for their very own Papermaking fundraiser-workshop on August 27\, 2023! \nFrom 1:30-3:30pm\, students will learn basic paper-making skills and make paper with prairie grasses and blue jeans. The instructors will also talk about identifying local plants that can be foraged for paper. Each participant will receive paper to take home and light snacks + refreshments will be offered. \nSwitch Grass Paper is a papermaking project founded by Chicago artists Aya Nakamura and Megan Diddie. This project aims to create opportunities for those interested in exploring pulp and paper arts. DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press invites our community and warmly welcomes Chicago Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines\, Malaya Chicago\, and Anakbayan Chicago into the studio for a family printmaking event that is open to the public on Sunday\, May 19th from 2pm-5pm. \nJoin Filipinos 4 Palestine for a printmaking art build to support Palestinian and Filipino movements for liberation. Our guest organizations/communities have prepared activities for young children\, a teach-in featuring local organizers\, and art sessions including screenprinting\, zinemaking\, block printing\, and more. \nOpen to all! RSVP HERE \nEvent Schedule: \n2:00pm to 3:30pm | Story time and kids’ open studio (families with children ages 0-12):  \nTo explore the connections between Palestine and the Philippines\, members of our guest communities will read stories by Palestinian and Filipino authors\, sing songs\, learn chants\, and make art to take to the streets. Art activities will include screenprinting\, zinemaking\, and more. Guests are welcome to bring their own tote bags or t-shirts to screenprint. \n3:30pm to 5:00pm | Teach-in and open studio (all ages): \nThere will be a teach-in session for folks of all ages that covers the Palestinian and Filipino liberation struggles at the Annex area of Spudnik Press.
