SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: Botanical Readiness with EC Brown
DESCRIPTION:Come have a drink with us!\n\nAs part of our fundraising efforts to stay inky\, join us for Drink & Draw on September 10. There will be beer\, paper\, pencils\, conversations\, and commiseration. \nThis event will be hosted by EC Brown\, who will introduce an online magazine\, Botanical Readiness. This gardening publication is going rogue: open to straightforward horticultural contributions while extending into occult\, psychedelic\, and genre territories. For Spudnik’s Drink & Draw\, artists will be invited to push botanical drawing into otherworldly places—and submit their work to Volume 4 of Botanical Readiness. \nPay what you can — suggested donation: $10–$20 \nDrink & Draw is a low-key\, drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials—and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs on the second Wednesday of every month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission is a suggested donation of $10–$20. We provide the beer — you just bring yourself (and your friends\, and your family; children are always welcome). \nAbout Botanical Readiness\, Vol. 4\nDeadline: Sept. 22 (Autumn Equinox)\nhttps://www.archeospiritist.com \nThis project is meant to run the gamut between gardening matters\, related research and writings\, botanical documentation\, occultist enigmas\, pure abstractions\, and tawdry genre influences (psych\, horror\, etc.). \nWish list of contributions: \n\nReflections on gardening\, cultivation\, and botany\nDocumentation of this summer’s gardening work or horticultural encounters\nExcerpts of related reading/research\nSupernatural/paranormal material\, even with a tenuous connection to gardening\nMinimalist psychedelia\nPure color experiments\, with or without a clear connection to the project\nPure signal/pattern abstractions — audio or visual\n\nEC Brown is an artist and exhibition organizer who teaches art and design at SAIC\, Columbia\, and Lillstreet. He became active in the domestic artspace network starting in the mid-2000s with COMA (2006–08)\, Floor Length and Tux (2009–2014)\, ASCII (2011–2022)\, and Tascam (2015–2023). Recent facilitations have been online\, including Record of the Month Club\, Hemiboreal (for Krampusnacht)\, and — most recently — Botanical Readiness.

SUMMARY:October 8 | Drink & Draw: Drawing Games! with Lya Finston
DESCRIPTION:Come have a drink with us!\n\nAs part of our fundraising efforts to stay inky\, join us for Drink & Draw on October 8. There will be beer\, paper\, pencils\, conversations\, and commiseration. \nIn this Drink & Draw\, artist and educator Lya Finston will guide attendees through a series of collaborative drawing games. These games will be tweaked and derived from those of comic artists Lynda Barry and Cathy G. Johnson. In the spirit of redefining what a “good” drawing is and minimizing over-thinking\, many of these exercises will be timed.  \nLya is always devastated to encounter folks who are scared to draw\, especially when they are her own students. In her previous classes at Harold Washington College and the University of Iowa\, Lya has centered fun\, fast-paced\, and collaborative drawing games as a means of mitigating this fear. As Cathy G. Johnson says\, “a drawing is good if you had fun while you were making it\,” so come have fun making drawings with us at Spudnik! \nPay what you can — suggested donation: $10–$20\n \nRSVP (or just show up) \nDrink & Draw is a low-key\, drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. \n  \nLya Finston is an artist\, printmaker\, and educator based in Chicago\, IL. Born in Brooklyn\, NY and raised in Cranford\, NJ\,  Lya has since made the midwest her home. In 2018 she received a BA in Studio Art and German Language from Oberlin College\, and in 2025\, an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.  \n  \nLya has formerly served as a Lecturer at Harold Washington College\, a Printmaking TA and Shop Technician at Bucknell University\, and an Access Services Assistant at the Ryerson & Burnham Library of the Art Institute of Chicago.

SUMMARY:November 12 | Drink & Draw: Letter Writing with Amir Badri
DESCRIPTION:Come have a drink with us!\n\nJoin us for Drink & Draw on November 12. \nIn this session\, artist and leather crafter Amir Badri will present his practice of letter writing. \nWriting letters—whether by hand\, on a typewriter\, or through the steady clack of a keyboard—is an artistic act disguised as correspondence. It’s both personal and performative: an exchange\, a gesture\, and sometimes\, a protest. \nA well-written letter is a tiny stage for wit\, satire\, and sincerity. At this Drink & Draw\, Amir will not only walk us through his practice\, but there will also be time\, paper\, and stamps available for you to write and send your own letters. \n  \nPay what you can — suggested donation: $10–$20 \nRSVP or just show up  \nDrink & Draw is a low-key\, drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. \nAmir Badri is a Chicago native\, leather crafter\, and artist. A product of Chicago Public Schools\, the Chicago Park District\, the Chicago Public Library\, and Marwen\, his philosophy is that knowledge is power and the most powerful thing one can do is to give that knowledge away. Equipped with a love of antiquated and feral technologies\, he believes that old ways of doing things have become overlooked back-channels of communication that can be used for change in this instant digital age. Rejecting the societal messaging of “finding his passion\,” he believes that curiosity leads and passion follows.

SUMMARY:MadMade Print Fair
DESCRIPTION:MadMade Print Fair\nNovember 15\, 2025 from 12-4:30PM \nAccess Living\, Chicago: 115 W Chicago Ave\, Chicago\, IL 60654\nFree to the public \nJoin us for MadMade\, a one-day event uplifting the creative work of artists living with psychiatric disabilities and mental health challenges. This community-centered fair brings together artists\, organizers\, and visitors to celebrate art that resists stigma\, builds connection\, and honors lived experience. \nMadMade is more than a marketplace — it’s a gathering built on inclusion\, care\, and cultural empowerment. Visitors are invited to explore and purchase artwork from printmakers\, illustrators\, designers\, and zine makers working across screenprinting\, linocut\, risograph\, etching\, digital processes\, and more. \nThis mad-positive\, disability-affirming event centers the artists themselves rather than diagnoses or treatments. MadMade offers a counter-narrative to both clinical and romanticized depictions of mental illness\, instead highlighting real people making real work — art that is beautiful\, messy\, joyful\, angry\, and thoughtful — work that sparks conversation and fosters community. \nParticipants: 47pennys\, Alyse Ruriani\, Ani Johnson\, ANKLEGLUE\, Anna Strzepek\, chana goldbloom\, Crossing Raindrops\, Cuatro Huevos\, Darya Foroohar\, Degenerates Collective\, Demah\, Dylan Sturdy\, Esme\, Indiana Mokey\, Mimisdreamies\, Nicholas Waguespack\, Nocturne Best\, OOO Press\, Open Lid Collective\, Reclaym\, Sami Shuman\, Sky Zhang\, Support Ho(s)e\, Tamara Harris\, The Center for Mad Culture\, Todd Evans\, Via Mortola\, Zio/Poen \nPanel Discussions\nThe fair will feature two panel discussions highlighting the intersections of mad identity\, artmaking\, and community. “Mad and Disability Culture Building” will take place from 12:15-1:00 PM\, bringing together Reclaym\, Degenerates Collective\, Dandy of the Underworld\, and OOO Press to discuss collective organizing\, mutual support\, and creative collaboration across mad and disabled communities. Later\, from 3:15–4:00 PM\, “Mad Artmaking” will feature Alyse Ruriani\, Sky Zhang\, 47pennys\, and Darya Foroohar in conversation about artistic process\, lived experience\, and reclaiming madness as a site of creativity and cultural expression. Both panels will be moderated by Matt Bodett\, the Director of the Center for Mad Culture\, and are free and open to the public. \nMadMade is organized by Dylan Sturdy in collaboration with Spudnik Press Cooperative\, The Center for Mad Culture\, and Access Living. \nDylan Sturdy is a proudly neurodivergent artist specializing in printmaking and wheel-thrown ceramics. With deep personal experience of mental illness and professional experience as a mental health counselor\, she creates academically informed artwork that supports those struggling with mental illness\, educates the public about psychiatric conditions\, and works to destigmatize and reframe how society understands mental health. Dylan is uniquely qualified to lead this fair and unite its participants. \nAccess Living is a national leader in disability rights and advocacy. It combats stereotypes\, protects civil rights\, and drives social change\, ensuring that people with disabilities can live independently and with dignity. \nSpudnik Press is a community-based printmaking studio committed to accessibility\, equity\, anti-racism\, and creative collaboration. It offers professional equipment\, education\, and an inclusive space welcoming artists from all backgrounds. \nThe Center for Mad Culture challenges traditional medical models of mental health\, offering new ways to understand the human experience of madness. They host exhibitions\, readings\, workshops\, and maintain a mad/disability research library\, fostering cultural conversations around mental difference. \n

SUMMARY:Karla Santana: Lotería
DESCRIPTION:Lotería takes its name and structure from the iconic Mexican card game\, repurposing its symbolic imagery as a framework for deeply personal storytelling. Each piece in the series functions like a card drawn from the deck — a moment\, a symbol\, a feeling — mapping Santana’s relationship to her own cultural identity across the full arc of her life. That relationship\, as the work makes clear\, is not a simple one. The exhibition holds space for the embarrassment and shame that can accompany cultural identity\, particularly across generations and geographies\, alongside the profound love\, gratitude\, and pride that run just as deep and just as true. \nThrough this series\, Santana revisits pivotal stages of her life\, pairing personal memory with the cultural symbols that have traveled with her family across generations. The result is a body of work that is at once a family portrait\, a self-portrait\, and an act of reclamation — a chance to look back at inherited culture not with the eyes of a child who wanted to fit in\, but with the clarity and appreciation of an adult who understands what she was given. \nKarla Santana is a first generation Mexican-American designer and illustrator from Chicago. As a self-proclaimed “serial-hobbyist\,” she enjoys exploring a variety of mediums from Risograph printing\, screenprinting\, sewing\, and crochet\, and more. She often combines multiple mediums to create whimsical pieces that integrate nostalgic elements of her childhood with playful characters and a vibrant\, character-driven visual language. \nKarla Santana\nLotería\nOpening Reception: May 2\, 6-8pm\nMay 2-30\, 2026 \n  \nLotería is on view at Spudnik Press\, 1821 W. Hubbard St.\, Chicago\, IL 60622. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm. \nPrograms at Spudnik Press are partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, the Driehaus Foundation\, and the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.

SUMMARY:Professional Practices Artist Lecture by Kacie Lees
DESCRIPTION:Join teaching artist Kacie Lees for a lecture on their work and free Professional Practices presentation covering living documents\, types of funding opportunities\, record keeping and digital organization\, resources\, and application tips to break into the world of exhibitions\, residencies\, and grants. \nLees is currently an Artist in Residence at Spudnik Press\, developing a new body of printwork that brings together thermally responsive inks and high-visibility reflective fabrics. Drawing from the visual language of early 20th-century pseudosciences—such as Rorschach inkblot tests and Thought Forms—the work takes on a nebulous\, expressive quality that reflects early attempts to make the invisible visible. These prints are both intuitive and investigative\, evoking shifting conditions and inviting engagement with ambiguity\, pattern\, and perception. \nKacie Lees is a Chicago-based neon artist\, printmaker\, and metalworker whose interdisciplinary practice explores light as both subject and material. Grounded in craft and informed by research into optics and chaos theory\, the work combines fire and electricity to create luminous forms that exist between natural phenomena and human perception. Lees teaches neon fabrication nationally and is the author of Neon Primer: A Handbook on Light Construction\, a hand-silkscreened technical manual supporting contemporary neon practice. \nPrograms at Spudnik Press are partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, the Driehaus Foundation\, and the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.
