SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: Flotsam and Jetsam Collagraphy with Dasha Klein
DESCRIPTION:Come have a drink with us! Join us for an exciting\, hands-on skill share led by resident artist Dasha Klein. \nDasha’s practice is deeply attuned to the geological history of Lake Michigan and the traces embedded within its shoreline. For Dasha\, collecting organic forms and debris is a meditative practice used to study patterns of erosion\, transformation\, and sedimentation. His work traces his movement from Michigan to Chicago\, utilizing found materials to explore grief\, transition\, and the emotional residue carried through place. \nBy combining experimental printmaking processes with textures derived from his beach finds\, Dasha explores the tension between slow material processes and rapid image reproduction. Working across lithography\, Risograph\, cyanotype\, and relief\, he enlarges and abstracts details from fossils and debris—shifting between microscopic and landscape perspectives to study accumulation\, decay\, and imprint. \nTo celebrate the end of his residency\, Dasha is opening up his process to the studio for a special two-hour session. He will guide you in viewing everyday detritus as a physical archive\, teaching you how to transform found objects into rich\, deeply textured prints. \nBasic materials will be provided\, but we highly encourage you to bring your own clean trash\, beach finds\, or small textured fragments to experiment with. \nDasha Klein (he/they) is a Chicago-based printmaker and art educator originally from Connecticut. Growing up in coastal New England\, he developed an obsession with beachcombing and exploring old graveyards. His practice uses discarded materials and experimental printmaking to investigate burial\, mourning\, and transformation\, often approaching fossils and tombs as physical records of past lives. Klein works across lithography\, screenprinting\, intaglio\, Risograph\, relief\, and cyanotype. He received a B.A. in Studio Art from Oberlin College in 2023 and formerly served as Print and New Media Studio Manager at Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 16\, 2026\, from 6pm to 9pm\, Unpacked Mobile Gallery brings Home Grown Vol. III\, to Spudnik Press for an evening highlighting printmaking\, film\, and environmental art. Located at 1821 West Hubbard Street in Chicago\, this event showcases work created from our Community Mentorship Program. \nThroughout the night\, attendees can step outside to tour the retrofitted mobile gallery parked on-site to look at the contemporary artworks traveling across the region. \nEvent Schedule\n\n\n6– 8pm: Docent-Led Mobile Gallery Tours \nExplore the Unpacked Mobile Gallery parked on-site guided by Director and Curator Lauren Iacoponi and Exhibitions Coordinator Naomi Elson. \n\n\n8pm: Drawing You Outside: Project Evergreen (Film & Q&A) \nThis film explores deep ecological observation\, botanical mapping\, and the preservation of our natural landscapes and will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with artist Christine Forni and film director James Forni. \n\n\n8pm: Home Grown Risograph Discussion & Presentation\nA presentation and Q&A focusing on the latest iteration of the Spudnik Press Community Mentorship Program led by Teaching Artist Alex Hohnsen. \n\n\nAbout the Community Mentorship Program for Home Grown Vol. III\nFor the latest iteration of the Community Mentorship Program\, Spudnik Press has partnered with the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) and Unpacked Mobile Gallery to immerse a new cohort of artists in the Risograph printing process. Moving away from traditional one-time workshops\, this program focuses on deepening technical skills over time fostering long-term artistic growth. Over consecutive weekly sessions\, taught by Alex Hohnsen\, participating artists worked with eco-friendly soy-based inks on recycled paper\, experimenting with the interplay of precision and spontaneity to translate their ideas into layered print editions. \nThe resulting Risograph works are fully integrated into Home Grown Vol. III\, an exhibition exploring the deep entanglement between human and plant life. Curated by Lauren Iacoponi\, Home Grown transforms the gallery space into an urban ecosystem of live plants and artwork rooted in bioregionalism\, local ecology\, and collective care. SUMMARY:1st International Milwaukee Riso Invitational Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:June 26-August 29\, 2026\nReception Friday\, June 29\, 6-8pm \nSpudnik Press is pleased to be the first stop on the national tour of 1st International Milwaukee Riso Invitational originating at Milwaukee’s Suburban Gallery. This collaborative exhibition and publishing project brings together an extraordinary group of contemporary artists\, illustrators\, and cultural producers to explore the power and substance of the democratic print.   \nThis inaugural invitational is produced in partnership with the The Comic Art Teaching and Study Workshop (CATS) and the artist‐run platform Bad at Sports\, printed at the new CATS facility in Sarofim Hall on the campus of Rice University. \nEach invited artist has created an original two‐color risograph print at 11Χ17 inches\, editioned collaboratively for public distribution. \nIn keeping with the spirit of risograph culture—affordable\, experimental\, and accessible—30 of each print edition will be available free to gallery visitors\, while the remaining 10 will be randomly distributed to participating artists. This gesture foregrounds a shared belief in art as both a gift and a tool for building cultural networks. \nThe invitational draws energy from the legacy of artist‐initiated print projects—ephemeral\, distributable\, and fiercely independent\, said Brian Andrews\, of Bad at Sports. SUMMARY:The Abolitionist Atlas and Counter-Mapping as a Tool for Movement Building
DESCRIPTION:Teach-in with Bria Miller\n \nIn this workshop\, we will utilize The Abolitionist Atlas to explore counter-mapping as a tool for movement building. We will discuss how communities have historically developed counter-mapping practices in response to oppression and participants will be guided through methods for creating their own maps rooted in local organizing landscapes and histories while responding to broader revolutionary struggles. \nRSVP \nAbout The Abolitionist Atlas\nThe purpose of The Abolitionist Atlas is to explore where and how self-determination is spatialized in our everyday lives. This project centers abolitionist\, New Afrikan socio-spatial practices emanating out of the Black South. Over the past year\, Bria has traveled throughout Mississippi\, Alabama and Georgia\, collaborating with community practitioners to map the organizations\, institutions\, infrastructures\, and campaigns shaping abolitionist struggles across the region. The Atlas documents these movement landscapes through city-based profiles\, maps\, illustrations\, and listings\, while inviting readers to connect with\, learn from\, and contribute to the work represented within them  \nAbout the Facilitator\nBria Miller is an urban designer\, printmaker and organizer from Virginia Beach\, Virginia. Her practice explores how communities map\, represent\, and transform the built environment in ways that build self-determination and cooperative futures. Through her New Afrikan counter-mapping practice\, she publishes the Abolitionist Atlas and other print media as tools for movement building.
