DESCRIPTION:From William Shakespeare to Rembrandt\, countless artists of every discipline have used the simple dip-pen to create art that changed the world. We aren’t asking you to do that. We’re just asking you to come down and have some fun working with one of the most ubiquitous tools in the illustrator’s tool kit\, and see what you can create. Join guest artist Andrew Ghrist and practice drawing with a pen & nib\, crosshatching\, textures\, and mark-making variations.\n\n\n \n\n\nAndrew Ghrist is a Chicago based artist\, illustrator\, and printmaker with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work consists of equal parts fantastic organic illustration of nature and graphic elements created by the printmaking process. Andrew Ghrist’s prints\, and even more so his original drawings\, exhibit dedication to craftsmanship and detail\, transforming the work into artifacts of countless hours spent diligently crouched over an image.\n\n\n \n\n\nDrink and Draw is a low-key event devoted to drawing practices. There is no teacher and no pretensions. Spudnik provides a theme for the evening\, props\, and festive drink. You provide a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and come with friends! Drawing nights take place the first Wednesday of every other month.

SUMMARY:Print like a Professional: A Candid Gallery Talk with Aron Gent
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for members of Spudnik Press only. If you are not currently a member please join or renew prior to registering for the workshop.\n“No unsolicited submissions” is a fairly universal stance for galleries to take. Which leaves many artists lost on how to proactively pursue opportunities for gallery representation. In fact\, there are many ways in which the “gallery world” can seem shrouded in mystery to emerging artists. \nLuckily\, Spudnik Press members are invited to visit Document and meet with Founder and Director\, Aron Gent. After viewing the current exhibition\, participants will sit down for an open conversation to demystify the inner workings of galleries\, dealers\, and collectors. How can artists get (and prepare) for studio visits? What exactly does gallery representation entail? What does the relationship look like between a gallery and their artists? How important is it for artists to “network” at gallery openings? \nDrinks and snacks will be provided but\, but artists should bring their own questions. Space in this gallery discussion is limited. Operating conjointly as a professional printmaking studio\, DOCUMENT facilitates the production of works by artists from Chicago and the US. \n

SUMMARY:Cassie Tompkins: A Revision of Everyday Life–Opening Reception & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:A Revision of Everyday Life is a series of screen-printed and dyed fabric monoprints that capture the splendor of quotidian life. Through an expression of geometric and abstract shapes\, these prints explore the emotional experience of color\, tensions between opposites\, and the nature of daily life. Tompkins’ technique merges industrial (screen-printing) and traditional (dyeing) craft to amplify the space between the exquisite and the drab. She strives to capture her wonder and appreciation of natural and manmade phenomena through material explorations. The flowing drape of the wall-mounted cotton panels\, inclusion of design elements\, and the imprecision of the processes speaks to her improvisational philosophy of making—work makes work—each step informs the next\, each panel inspires the following\, and if there is a plan it’s\, on the whole\, guesswork. The resultant imagery is bright and graphic\, inviting the viewer to take another look at their own surroundings— a revision of everyday life —through material and designed transformations. \nCassie Tompkins: A Revision of Everyday will kick-off with a Artist Talk at 6:00 p.m. on August 11th\, followed by the Opening Reception. The exhibition runs through September 30\, 2017. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, noon to 5:00 p.m.\, or by appointment. SUMMARY:Print like a Professional: Residencies & Artist Proposals
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for members of Spudnik Press only. If you are not currently a member please join or renew prior to registering for the workshop.\nThis twofold workshop begins with a focused panel discussion featuring representatives from Ox-bow\, Ragdale\, and Spudnik Press\, each representing their respective programs for artists. Following the group discussion\, each participant will have the opportunity for an individual proposal review with one of the panelists. \nThe panel discussion will first present the current landscape of opportunities for Chicago artists to find support to develop new bodies of work outside of academia. By looking more closely at the unique programs of each organization\, we’ll examine how the review and selection process varies between opportunities\, what types of artists and projects are sought out\, and the tacit criteria that jurors desire in applications. \nWe’ll also discuss how artists can ensure they get the most out of their experience as a resident\, fellow\, grantee\, etc. What does it take for an opportunity to not just support one project\, but to create more opportunities or initiate a pivot career shift? How have alumni benefits from being in the network of graduates? \nParticipants can then stick around to meet individually. For those who want specific feedback on a proposal (either universal or for a specific opportunity) should submit materials to angee@spudnikpress.org no later than August 13 for panelists to review in advance. General questions and impromptu review of materials are also welcome. Each participant will have have the opportunity for one 10-minute session with one of the presenters. \nLastly\, each panelist will bring along and share a resource their organization uses as part of their review process (such as juror guidelines)\, giving participants rare insight into what happens with their application after they click “submit”. \nOnline Enrollment:\n\nPresenter Bios:\nAmy Sinclair\, Grants and Admissions Manager\, Ragdale\nAmy Sinclair is a visual artist from Chicago with special interest in performance art\, books arts\, and fashion. She is Grants and Admissions Manager at the Ragdale Foundation. She graduated magna cum laude from DePaul University and joined the Ragdale staff in spring 2013. \n\nRebecca Parker\, Program Director\, Ox-bow\nRebecca Parker is interested in creating opportunities for artists to engage with communities that support and grow their practice. As Program Director at Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency\, she works with faculty\, visiting artists\, artists-in-residence\, and students to create programming that connects artists to the landscape of Ox-Bow as a site for experimentation and community. As an arts administrator\, she has worked in a number of capacities\, including commissioning public art\, working with university admissions and grants management. She received her Master of Fine Arts\, with a performance focus\, from the University of Connecticut\, and continues her practice as an artist. \n\nNicolette Ross\, Studio Manager\, Spudnik Press Cooperative\nNicolette is the Studio Manager for Spudnik Press Cooperative. She has long been a contributor to the Spudnik Press community. First joining our organization in 2012\, Nicolette has been an active member\, volunteer and teacher. In her staff role\, she manages the Fellowship Program and Exhibitions Programs. \nNicolette Ross holds a BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts from the University of Central Florida\, and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis.
