SUMMARY:Drink & Draw August 2018: Repeat Patterns with Orr Gidon
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever wonder how wallpaper designers create intricate patterns that fit together seamlessly? Or have you ever wanted to make your own spunky gift wrap? If so\, stop by our August Drink & Draw to learn some fun approaches to designing your own unique patterns\, as elegant\, devious\, or wacky as you desire. \nGuest artist\, Orr Gidon\, will guide us through a collaborative approach to pattern making inspired by M.C. Escher’s tessellations. Learn how to weave basic shapes and lines into a rich tapestry of marks and textures that captures everyone’s style\, be it floral\, squiggly\, or geometric. If you fall in love with your design\, perhaps you can return to Spudnik to turn it into curtains or gift wrap! \nOrr Gidon is a freelance artist\, designer\, and fabricator living and working in Chicago. Their design work emphasizes principles of ergonomics\, multi-functionality\, and sustainability with a sculptural approach. In their 2D work\, Gidon is stimulated by pattern\, repetition of line\, and shape to create visual movements and optical illusions. Within their 3D practice\, Gidon explores concepts of change and movement through processes of material manipulation\, employing wood\, metal\, and glass. Gidon earned their BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where they studied Printmedia and 3D Design & Fabrication. \nDrink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Hull | Featuring Tim Daisy and Katinka Kleijn
DESCRIPTION:Spudnik Press Cooperative\, together with Fulton Street Collective\, are pleased to present An Evening with Richard Hull\, Featuring Tim Daisy and Katinka Kleijn. This special concert and print release event are organized on the occasion of a newly published limited edition of prints by esteemed artist Richard Hull\, produced by Spudnik Press Cooperative. \nAs part of the invitational Fine Art Editions Program at Spudnik Press\, Hull created a sugar-lift aquatint intaglio print. The work is comprised of concentric circles and loops\, carefully arranged on top of one another and accentuated by repetitive forms to give rise to a harmonious potrait-like structure\, titled “Spud”. \nA longtime fan of jazz improvisation\, Hull’s lyrical artwork\, including selections from his recent exhibition at Western Exhibitions\, will be featured alongside a rare musical performance by Chicago-based percussionist and composer Tim Daisy and reknown Dutch cellist Katinka Kleijn. Distinguished for their contributions to the field of improvised music\, Daisy and Kleijn will delight our audience with a spontaneous composition in response to Hull’s work\, as well as share a few personal anecdotes about their cross-disciplinary collaboration —all in the intimate environment of Fulton Street Collective’s space. \nAbout the Artists:  \nTim Daisy is a percussionist and composer working in the fields of improvised and composed music. He has performed and recorded original music for modern dance\, sound installations\, film\, and improvised music ensembles of various configurations since 1997. Daisy owns and operates Relay Records and also helps curate the weekly OPTION series at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. \nRichard Hull is an accomplished artist with paintings\, drawings and prints in numerous private collections. He has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; Nelson-Atkins Museum\, Kansas City; the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art\, Ridgefield\, CT; Contemporary Art Center\, Cincinnati\, OH; Portland Art Museum\, OR; the Cleveland Institute of Art\, Cleveland\, OH; and the Painting Center\, New York\, NY to name a few. Richard Hull is represented by Western Exhibitions\, Chicago. \nKatinka Kleijn defies today’s traditional definition of a cellist\, transitioning comfortably through the styles of classical\, experimental\, contemporary\, improvisatory\, folk and progressive rock\, as well as across the traditional fields of solo\, chamber and orchestral performance. SUMMARY:In Conversation with Carris Adams
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this summer\, we had the great and distinct pleasure of welcoming Chicago-based artist Carris Adams for a three-week residency at Spudnik Press Cooperative. During her time spent with us\, Adams developed a new edition of prints based on a series of paintings inspired by signage found in the landscape that exists in multiples. This body of work stems from the artist’s investigation of visual markers of “domesticated space” (i.e. roads\, residential structures\, commercial structures\, government buildings\, cemeteries\, advertisements\, etc.) and the relational threads between ownership in marginalized spaces\, politics\, class\, histories\, celebration\, and resilience. \nOn August 30\, 2018\, join us for an intimate gathering as we welcome Carris Adams back for a conversation about what drives her itinerant tendencies and unsettled curiosity in her art practice and how printmaking allowed her to further some if the ideas and aesthetic choices in her work\, which up until recently was unchartered territory for this painter and drawer. \nA casual reception is to follow\, featuring a temporary installation of Adams’ prints created during her residency displayed alongside the paintings that inspired them. This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artist: \nCarris Adams is a visual artist whose practice visually investigates markers of “domesticated space”. The conceptually multi-layered works seek to inform and position viewers to recognize their assumptions\, recall an experience and perhaps note how societal markers materialize in the landscape. Adams received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin (2013) and her MFA from the University of Chicago (2015). Adams’s work has been exhibited at The Studio Museum in Harlem ( New York\, NY) \, The Logan Center Exhibitions at The University of Chicago (Chicago\, IL)\, Produce Model Gallery (Chicago\, IL) Tiger Strikes Asteroid Gallery (Chicago\,IL) and The Courtyard Gallery at The University of Texas at Austin (Austin\, TX). \nTo learn more about Adams and her work\, please visit: www.carrisadams.com.
