SUMMARY:Drink & Draw: Exquisite Animations | April 2020
DESCRIPTION:Enter the fourth dimension at our animation themed Drink & Draw this April. Inspired by the surrealist exquisite corpse parlor game in which a collection of words and images are assembled by a group of people\, we will create a collaborative animation centered on the theme of time. \nGuest Artist\, Lisa Armstrong\, will share how the element of time can turn simple drawings into playful juxtaposition\, abstract stories\, and unexpected visual delights. Drawn animation frames can take the form of comics\, storyboards\, patterns\, color fields\, photo collage\, or type-based images. The evening will culminate with everyone photographing their frames to create and a collaborative stop-motion animation. Popcorn will be ready for the big debut screening! \nScheduling Note: April Fool’s! This Drink & Draw is April 8 (2nd Wednesday)! On the first Wednesday of the month\, we recommend you head to Art on theMART\, the largest permanent digital art projection in the world\, projecting contemporary artwork across the 2.5 acre facade of the historic Merchandise Mart\, to get inspired by the debut of Lisa’s animation made in collaboration with the Arts of Life. \n\nLisa Armstrong is a multi-disciplinary designer\, artist\, and educator. Her research focuses primarily on the study of empathic design\, time-based media\, and tensions between artificial and emotional intelligence. As a designer\, she mainly works with clients in the non-profit\, arts\, and cultural sectors. \nDrink & Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions\, no prerequisites\, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials\, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $15 suggested donation. The event is BYOB\, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.

SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Points of Contact - Celebrating the Tactile
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Ally Hembree\nRemember when it wasn’t taboo to high five or hug? What social interaction do you miss the most? Our first ever online Drink & Draw will be led by guest artist\, Ally Hembree\, who will guide us through how to use shapes\, patterns\, and a limited color palette to illustrate our answers to these questions\, and rejuvenate special objects within our home.  \nEmbellish a household object\, upcycle a glass bottle\, or follow Ally’s lead by painting a terracotta pot! Don’t have an object on hand? Scavenge your neighborhood for a nice stone to make the feature of your rock garden. Using acrylic paints (or whatever you have on hand)\, make your object all the more alluring while lamenting our social interactions during the stay at home order and celebrating relationships from a distance. \nThroughout the stay-at-home order\, Hembree has dove into decorating terracotta pots as a way to explore a new creative practice centered on painting and drawing. While right now the ultimate expression of care is distance\, Hembree has enjoyed designing pots to celebrate the importance of embrace and look toward a “post-quar” future. \nZoom Meeting ID: 971-6155-4213\nSuggested Materials:  \n\nFound Object(s) (terracotta pots recommended)\nRegular pencil \nAny paper \nAcrylic Paints (hardware stores have cheap samples) \nPaint Brushes\, variety of sizes\nWater to rinse brushes\n\n\nDrink & Draw [Virtual] is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to staying creative from home. There are no pretensions and newcomers are always welcome\, so invite your friends to join! Each Drink & Draw [Virtual] features a new guest artist and a new theme or project that uses pencil\, paper\, and everyday household supplies. Don’t have a sketchbook? Hosts will help you improvise. Events are currently scheduled each Wednesday through May 6. Find us on Zoom\, a free app for your phone or computer. And of course: BYOB!  \nLove the experience? Pitch in to our Venmo Tip Jar (@spudnikpress) to directly support the featured artist and Spudnik Press Cooperative.

SUMMARY:Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Typetones – Talking With Type
DESCRIPTION:Join Zakia Rowlett to explore how handlettering can be used to give a tone to text\, add personality to communications\, bring depth to the meaning of words\, and harmonize form with function.  \nWorking with a single word you’ll develop your own typeface for it\, using elements of graphic design to impact how someone will respond to reading it.  You’ll explore how these methods are applied to commercial branding and logo design\, and how you can apply them to your own creative projects. \nZakia Rowlett is an artist and designer specializing in logo\, branding\, book design\, and posters. She will guide us through her analog hand lettering process\, from the sketching and ideation phase through to refining the final letterforms. She’ll also demonstrate how to use a tablet to experiment with custom letterforms and digital typography. \nNote: We’ve moved this Drink & Draw up to 5pm to allow you to take advantage of daylight (nature’s light box). \nJoin Zoom Meeting ID: 91874507741\nSuggested Materials:  \n\nTracing Paper or lightest weight paper available\n*Window nearby*\nMechanical pencil\nBallpoint pen or thin marker\n\nOptional Materials: \n\niPad or drawing tablet\n\n\nDrink & Draw [Virtual] is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to staying creative from home.
