They remember what you are.” – Jim Henson \nSummer is almost over and that means school will soon be back in session\, albeit in a very different and much more challenging way than usual. Whether students are in the classroom or learning from home\, using a tablet or a pencil and paper\, one thing is certain: their teachers will have a lasting impact on them\, as our teachers had on us. \nSo please join cartoonist and teaching artist Alex Nall for a comics workshop celebrating our favorite teachers\, and how they shaped us into who we are today. Alex will lead us in writing\, drawing and designing our own page of comic book art using memories from elementary\, high school\, or beyond. Simple set-up and endless storytelling possibilities await! No drawing experience required. Only honesty\, openness\, and creativity are required to craft your story. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Alex Kostiw\n\nHave you always wanted to try your hand at comics?\nAre you an experienced comic artist\, looking to geek out with a group of fellow enthusiasts?\nMaybe you are a visual artist looking for a break from your other practice\, or a writer who wants to see what pictures can bring to your work?\n\nAll are welcome at this Drink & Draw where Alex Kostiw will teach us how comics work—and why! We will then put those theories into practice together. Starting with pure structure\, we’ll look at how panels express hierarchy\, rhythm\, and emotion through shape and arrangement. Then we’ll generate a variety of images from abstract to still-life\, from drawings based on reference images to a collection of collage materials\, which we will cut up into panels or turn into “viewfinder” style overlays for a finished page. As we go\, we’ll discuss the different relationships between text and picture in comics: how text can complement\, expand on\, or emphasize picture\, and vice versa. Please contact angee@spudnikpress.org with questions regarding safety protocols or to schedule a private viewing. \n\nFeatured Artists: Candida Alvarez\, Alexandra Antoine\, Judith Brotman\, Andrea Carlson\, Celeste DeLuna\, Brendan Fernandes\, Azadeh Gholizadeh\, Erin Hayden\, Benjamin Merritt\, Jessie Mott\, Paul Nudd\, João Oliveria\, Steve Reinke\, Joe Tallarico\, Selina Trepp\nWith Renewed Urgency is our annual exhibition featuring new prints by 16 artists\, created through our Residency and Invitational Publishing Programs. This exhibition reflects on the unique power of a printmaking studio to breathe new life into the art making process\, and how we depend on art during times of crisis for solace and meaning. Our title and theme With Renewed Urgency is also a chance to reflect on how the current pandemic has escalated already existing social emergencies that many of our featured artists have long been making work about. The call of Andrea Carlson and Celeste De Luna’s Indigenous Futurism rings even louder\, as capitalism and colonization turn COVID-19 into an economic disaster. Others like Selina Trepp and Benjamin Merritt give us critical and pleasurable ways to reconsider what it means for an artist to remain homebound\, reduce their material consumption\, or need to rest because of an illness. \nOther show highlights include a collagraph impression of the pelt of a plastic animal by our first international Resident Artist\, João Oliveira\, organized in collaboration with Comfort Station and funded by the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund. The prints from Ten x Ten show a collaboration between visual artists and musicians exploring the translation of artistic gestures across media. \nThe Spudnik Press Cooperative Residency Program provides professional printmakers unfettered studio access for new projects. The Publishing Program welcomes artists from a variety of contemporary disciplines\, ranging from painting and drawing to performance and experiential art making\, to enter a centuries-old tradition of developing a fine art print in collaboration with professional printers. Through these programs\, Spudnik Press invites a diverse range of artists to continue printmaking’s unique history as a fine art\, a master craft\, and a social practice. With Renewed Urgency showcases traditional process and new experiments in screenprint\, intaglio\, relief\, collagraph\, and digital printing\, as well as an impressive range of monotype techniques and prints that used the plate-making process as a form of sculpture. By installing the exhibition throughout the printshop in which the artwork was produced\, we embrace our goal of encouraging artists and audiences to move through a variety of creative roles: making\, experiencing\, learning\, and teaching. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lya Finston\nWatch your pictures jump off the page and onto the screen in this fun\, entry-level animation workshop! During this session\, we’ll take inspiration from our domestic surroundings\, breathing life into the inanimate and the mundane in order to realize fantastical scenes taking place in the home under quarantine. Love drawing? Sketch out a cartoon! Prefer taking pictures? Bring some objects together in a setting for a stop motion video!\n\nAlong with examples of her own work\, Lya will also showcase a few of the animators she turns to for inspiration\, including Suzan Pitt\, Ray Harryhausen\, Bill Plympton\, Cristóbal León\, and Joanquin Cociña. She will then demystify how to quickly and easily create the content necessary for your very own animated GIFs\, embracing the wonderfully clunky and homemade aesthetics of this extremely accessible medium. SUMMARY:A Lunchtime Conversation: Alexandra Antoine & Celeste De Luna
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual event with artists Celeste De Luna (2019 Resident Artist) and Alexandra Antoine (2020 Ten x Ten)\, whose prints are up now in our current exhibition With Renewed Urgency. Celeste and Alexandra will each give a short talk about their practice\, followed by a conversation with each other\, the audience\, and the printmakers they worked with at Spudnik Press. \nTuesday\, September 22\n12pm – 1pm (CST)\nZoom Meeting ID: 956 0089 4990 \nAlexandra Antoine is a Chicago-based artist who also works with Free Write Arts & Literacy as a teaching artist throughout the city. Her work is multidisciplinary in nature but connected through the themes of language\, line\, color and portraiture. She references her Haitian-American cultural upbringing and memories of travel\, community\, and storytelling. Woven throughout her work are the underlying influences of non-verbal languages such as symbols on cloth\, scarification on bodies\, and colors with significant spiritual and cultural meanings. These elements play a role in the translation of her experiences of visual and methodical research of place\, people and culture. Alexandra came to Spudnik Press as part of the Ten x Ten project which pairs visual artists with composers to create original\, collaborative works. \nCeleste De Luna is a printmaker from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She is “a true daughter of the border lands” according to Inez Hernandes-Avila and a self-described Nepantlera\, from the Nahuatl word meaning in-between space. De Luna has been a front-row witness to the militarization of the U.S. Mexico border\, and has an intimate connection to the issues of immigration and decolonization she engages with as an artist and activist. For De Luna\, printmaking is a tool for desconstructing oppressive paradigms in her physical\, spiritual\, and psychic environment; through this medium she creates new landscapes and iconographies about women\, children\, and families at the border\, and the spiritual struggle of conflicting identities and “survivor’s guilt” they experience during migration. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Lucia Calderon Arrieta\n\nWhat does it mean to draw into the page?\nIf you could turn a picture plane filled with holes and circles into a world of portals\, where might they lead you?\n\nLucia Calderon Arrieta will show us how to use line\, shape\, and value to create interconnected forms that are mysterious and mesmerizing\, casting an illusion of depth and inviting us into many different layers of space. During quarantine\, many of us have experienced moments of retreat\, or turning inwards. Lucia will show us how she uses this drawing practice to embrace those feelings\, and dig into the picture plane rather than trying to expand off of it. \nNo drawing experience is needed for this meditative and abstracted project. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Ashley Houghton\nArtist\, printmaker\, and athlete Ashley Houghton uses collage throughout her own practice\, altering the “official” records she finds in mass media and popular photography to change the narrative about culture and values\, particularly about women in sports. We will use found materials and new drawings to change the context and content of existing stories\, including political and social issues we want to reframe from their typical depictions. We’ll use the power of erasures as much as additions\, and consider collage as an act of “writing” with visual media.
