During the pandemic\, and mass movements for revolution\, this exhibition asks: What kinds of physical and relational structures will we need\, or need to build\, in order to survive? How will the warmth and softness of our bodies guide us? \nIn Audre Lorde’s 1978 essay “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic As Power\,” she defines the erotic as “…a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. Plants and flowers growing in the sun; wild lilies in the allies; vines climbing up buildings and spilling over with blossoms; all the sounds and smells and colors of the warmer months… \nJoin us for a cozy night of “Summer Dreaming” recalling the sunlight and heat waves that will return! Flora and fauna will be our inspiration for a one-page comic strip featuring our own personal narratives and our fantasy avatars in Artist Shari Carillo will start the session with group drawing activities looking at the natural world\, and then lead us through exercises in character development\, layouts\, lettering and inking\, and adding color. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Emma Sielaff\nBring a blast of light and color to the longest night of the year by creating your own handmade altar piece in preparation for the winter solstice! Collage your favorite colorful materials into the form of a brilliant flame\, blazing bonfire\, or meditative candle. Then\, weave in writings\, quotes\, or intentions you want to set for the coming year. Both the finished piece and the process of making it can bring clarity and inspiration to your hopes and goals for the new year. Later\, you might do a ceremonial burn of your creation on the night of the solstice\, or keep it up as a centering reminder in your daily life. \nArtist Emma Sielaff is a printmaker and papermaker who makes collages of dreamscapes and wonderlands\, and loves to play with textures and layers in her abstract pieces.
