Lucille Chasin was the children of Italian immigrants who lived on Horatio Street in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village for almost 50 years until she was murdered in 1991. She was the superintendent and caretaker of a building on that street, and became known over the years as the “Mayor of Horatio St” by the neighbors and the community. She was loud, boisterous, and fiercely maternal to the young, wayward, creative men and women who found their way to New York in the years that the Village was a bohemian artist’s mecca. This portrait was painted in 1952 by a young artist that Lucille knew (his name was forgotten over time), who sadly passed away not long after this was made. She was about 28 years old at the time this was painted.
