Spudnik Press is pleased to welcome Adam Jaye Porter to the studio. During his fall residency, Porter will develop a new body of print and installation-based work exploring speculative queer utopias through reductive printmaking, color theory, and light.
Porter’s interdisciplinary practice spans animation, sound, printmaking, drawing, and modular installation. Taking inspiration from pastiche fantasies, natural phenomena, and the properties of light, he transforms archives, patterns, and natural motifs into immersive, speculative spaces. His work draws directly from historic imagery collected across queer archives and libraries—including Chicago’s own Gerber Hart Library and Archives—recontextualizing historical ephemera to explore regional lineage, queer graphic design, and collective memory.
During his residency, Porter will focus primarily on relief and screen printing to develop a series of rich, reductive color prints that merge vibrant abstraction with traces of landscape and printed archival materials. Experimenting with seamless repeat patterns and collage, these prints will serve as building blocks for a modular wall installation. Porter will explore how printed, multi-layered surfaces interact with projected light and ambient illumination to generate subtle optical illusions and dynamic spatial environments. The project will culminate in a print-based installation alongside a small suite of fine art prints on paper.
Throughout his residency, Porter will utilize Spudnik Press’s print facilities to expand the technical scale and spatial potential of his print-making practice. A public event will be announced in conjunction with the residency.
