As Spudnik turns ten, we are excited to brag about our community of artists and makers. We have organized two pop-up art sales to help our members sell some art and make some money:

Saturday, June 3, 12-5pm:

Saturday, June 17, 11-6pm:
Pop-Up Print Sale @ Galerie F

Participating is free and simple: We are trying a new process to keep things professional and streamlined: Each artist will simply drop off a presentation book full of their artwork by May 31. Spudnik will coordinate sales at a central cashier station for both pop-up sales and provide packaging for sold artwork. Artists are required to volunteer for just one shift at one of the two events.

Do you make comics, zines, apparel, or cards? We’ve got you covered! In addition to a presentation book per artist, each event will have a table just for cards and publications and rack for t-shirts and textiles.

 Requirements to Participate:

• Participants must be current members of Spudnik Press Cooperative.
• Participants must sign up for one or more volunteer shifts at either the Birthday Bash Printing Dash or the Pop-Up Print Sale @ Galerie F.
• There is no participation fee, but Spudnik Press Cooperative will process all sales and retain 25% of all sales to cover fees, packaging, and event production costs.
• Each artist will be able to submit one presentation book, like this Blick brand one or this Itoya brand one, or this one for larger prints, not to exceed 24”x30”, filled with as many artworks as they desire.
• Artists may also bring up to 20 publications, cards, or textiles to be displayed on a table or clothing rack.
• Artists must completely fill out our 2-in-1 price tag & receipt for each and every artwork. These tags should be folded in half and placed around the edge of each print or in the sleeve with each print.
• Multiple copies of prints may be included by either placing more than one print in each sleeve, or by submitting one additional package of artwork containing all the multiples. Each of these prints must have an accompanying tag/receipt.
• While portfolios may contain non-print artwork, the majority of art for sale must feature printmaking.

To Participate:

1. Complete the Online Sign Up Form by Monday, May 15.
2. Sign up for any Volunteer Shift at either the Birthday Bash or Galerie F.
3. Drop off artwork and completed tags/receipts by Wednesday, May 31.
4. Pick up all unsold artwork between June 26 and July 15.

Spudnik Press Cooperative is accepting applications for our Fellowship Program, our flagship opportunity for emerging artists to gain access unrestricted access to our studios.

This is a seven-month program that provides support for young artists through full studio access and professional development opportunities. Fellows will acquire leadership skills and Studio Assistance experience through monitoring a weekly open studio session. Fellows will also work closely with each other and staff to develop and lead Community Workshops at Spudnik Press.

In addition to monitoring one Open Studio session per week, Fellows will also take on leadership roles at special events, member meetings, and outreach efforts. Fellows will meet regularly to share artwork and support each others projects. The program creates accountability for the cohort of four fellows as they set personal goals, create healthy studio habits, and develop their portfolio.

This program is geared towards recent graduates and other artists in a similar transitional period. Four positions are available per term.

Three times each year, we accept proposals from both new-to-Spudnik and veteran Teaching Artists to lead “Special Topics” classes and workshops. These often one-off opportunities allow us to host guest teaching artists, teach intermediate or advanced skills, present atypical or unique workshop topics, and occasionally even align learning opportunities to other programs like our exhibitions.

Download the 2017 Call for Exhibition Proposals

The Spudnik Press Exhibitions Program invites exhibition proposals from artists and curators. This is our annual opportunity for individuals or collaborators to submit unsolicited proposals for solo or small group exhibitions. Proposals may be for existing or new work. Membership at Spudnik Press is not required to submit proposals.

Exhibitions are selected by a committee of Spudnik Press members using the curatorial statement (below) as a guidepost for all curatorial decisions. Strong proposals will resonate with the curatorial priorities of Spudnik Press Cooperative.

While exhibitions may feature artwork in any media, 2-D or wall-mounted artwork is typically best suited for the gallery, which functions as a multi-purpose space. While we welcome proposals from beyond Chicago, applicants should be aware that there is a very limited budget per exhibition. Applicants may be responsible for much of the shipping costs and travel to and from Chicago.

Spudnik Press Cooperative Curatorial Statement:

Spudnik Press exhibitions amplify the impact of resources at Spudnik Press by providing opportunities for artists and audiences to move through a variety of creative roles: from making to experiencing, from learning to teaching.

Spudnik Press showcases work that has ongoing relevance to our mission and vision, while also encouraging a breadth of community participation.  Exhibitions create an active platform to expand and diversify our cooperative.

To achieve these goals, Spudnik Press exhibitions:

• Are selected by a curatorial committee of active members.
• Emphasize printmaking and print-based projects within contemporary art practices.
• Showcase the creative, analytical or technical process of art making.
• Feature exceptional projects, whether produced at Spudnik Press or beyond.
• Engage diverse levels of professional experience.

Spudnik Press exhibitions offer exhibiting artists opportunities to:

• Produce new fine art prints.
• Present corresponding educational programming.
• Present Artist Talks.

Timeline:

• Proposals due: Sunday, January 8, 2017
• Applicants will be notified by March 1, 2017
• Exhibitions will occur between May 15, 2017 and February 28, 2018.
• Exhibitions typically run between 5 and 8 weeks.

To Apply:

E-mail the following to angee@spudnikpress.org with “Exhibition Proposal” in the subject line:

1) PDF including the following documents in the following order:

• Working title of the exhibition
• Exhibition Narrative: Description of the exhibition, both conceptually and visually. 150 – 250 words.
• Artist Statement(s) and Bio(s): Brief statement for each artist and bio for each artist. Include websites, blogs, notable artistic achievements, other relevant material.
• Resume or CV: No longer than two pages. Please only submit a resume for the curator, solo artist or main contact for group shows, not each individual artist.
• Three professional references for the curator, solo artist or main contact
• Image list including medium, year of completion, dimensions, and name of file

2) Work Samples:

• For solo exhibitions, include up to 10 images of work that will be included in the exhibition. Group exhibition proposals may include up to 3 images per artist. Sketches may be included for forthcoming work. Please include an image list. Images need not exceed 1 MB each.
• Work samples files should be titled LASTNAME_01.jpg, LASTNAME_02.jpg, etc.

Classes at Spudnik Press are an opportunity for creative individuals with diverse disciplines, backgrounds, and artistic goals to work alongside each other and push each others creative practice. We offer foundational printmaking classes, as well as related crafts like bookbinding, illustration, design and textiles.

Each class session, we offer a range of what we call “Core Classes” taught by veteran teachers that authorize students to use our collection of presses and print equipment. Plus, we select a few very special “Special Topics” that allow us to host new-to-Spudnik teaching artists, present one-off workshops and classes, teach intermediate or advanced skills and align learning opportunities to other programs like our exhibitions.

Internships at Spudnik Press focus on bringing students into every aspect of facilitating a community studio. Interns assist with daily maintenance of the shop, included cleaning, stocking, and ordering supplies, marketing, exhibitions, record keeping, fundraising, workshops, and classes, and more. Students typically work two days a week (Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays) 10-5pm.

Responsibilities include:

Art Administration: Fundraising, accounting, event planning, etc.
Online and Print Marketing: Design and distribution for small non-profit environment
Teaching Assistance: For group classes, workshops, and field trips
Printing Assistance: For Publishing projects and promotional materials
Exhibition Assistance: Organization, installation, documentation, and promotion
