Screenprinting photographic imagery is a tricky task. However, understanding a few additional steps and acquiring a little specialized knowledge can dramatically expand the aesthetic capabilities of screenprinting. Photographic printmaking can be used in isolation to create a stylized print of a photograph or used in tandem with hand illustrations, typography, etc.

Printers who sign up for this workshop will be able to translate a digital photograph into a monotone, duotone, or 4-color CMYK print during this one-day workshop. Students will learn what a halftone image is, how it works and how to use Photoshop to create a photographic halftone or bitmap image. From there students will learn about process versus spot colors, color overlay, moire patterns, and aesthetic options when printing a photo or any image with a halftone.

Once the photographic stencil is ready to take into the darkroom, students will learn about the best mesh count for printing photographs and tips for perfect registration. Each student will leave with their own small edition of prints using an image they bring with them to class.
