We are Hiring: Studio Assistant (PT)

Spudnik Press is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Chicago, Illinois. Focused on the art & craft of printmaking, Spudnik provides local artists with affordable access to studio facilities, equipment, and professional development opportunities. Open studio hours, residency & fellowship programs, exhibitions, and other initiatives are offered to foster community, encourage collaboration, and serve our diverse network of creatives.

The Studio Assistant will work closely with the Studio Manager to print client jobs, manage printing services, and maintain a conducive artistic environment for all who utilize our studio. While this role is primarily a printing position, the Assistant will also help maintain facilities, equipment, and supplies, and provide broad support for our studio offerings. The Studio Assistant must be well-versed in multiple printmaking processes and possess strong attention to artistic and material detail.

This position is a 16-hour-per-week position, with the possibility of additional hours for client publishing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Spudnik Publishing & Commercial Printing Program
  • Communicates with clients from initial inquiry through proofing, project completion, and delivery
    Works closely with artists and clients to print projects and editions
  • Helps document projects and processes for marketing and promotion, especially for special artist collaborations and artworks added to the Spudnik store
  • Leads authorization sessions for staff and studio users; processes forms and maintains the digital database of authorized users
  • Assists with the training, management, and scheduling of volunteers serving as Open Studio Monitors; helps manage the Studio Monitor Program
  • Helps manage studio reservations and equipment check-out systems
  • Manages inventory: reviews press inventory and orders supplies for classes and workshops
  • Facilitates community events and organizes printing demos for open houses
  • Helps facilitate exhibitions, bi-monthly community meetings, and fundraisers

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Experience working collaboratively within a small team
  • Administrative and customer service experience highly preferred
  • Mastery of fine art printmaking processes, especially screenprinting and risography; familiarity with letterpress, etching, relief, and bookmaking is preferred
  • Outgoing demeanor and strong communication skills
  • Self-starter, comfortable working independently; experience self-generating projects
