THIS SATURDAY: Support Hamilton Wood Type and Print Museum

Saturday, December 15, 2012
12:00pm – 6:00pm
at Center for Book and Paper Arts

Spudnik is happy to spread the word about this fundraiser event in support of helping the Hamilton Wood Type and Print Museum find a new home!

Official invitation from Columbia CBPA:
Please join us for an open house, demonstrations, and print sale with all proceeds benefiting the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum.

As you may know, the museum is being evicted from their current historic space and is asking for your support to make their impending move possible. Please consider donating some of your time and some of your printed material into making the dream of a new facility come true.

There’s no better time to spread the joy of printing than during this season of need!

Annex Open Studio Guest Hosts: Julia Hendrickson & B. Ingrid Olson

Monday, December 17, 2012
6:30 – 11:00pm
FREE
at The Annex at Spudnik Press

Guest artists Julia Hendrickson and B. Ingrid Olson will be hosting Monday night’s Open Studio session at The Annex.

Both artists have a history of working with Spudnik Press in different capacities. Written by Julia Hendrickson, Grow No Moss was the first book published at Spudnik Press. Ingrid worked at Spudnik Press as an Artist in Residence during the summer of 2011. During her residency, Olson completed a series of singular screen printed drawings, enlarged from smaller charcoal drawings.

Julia and Ingrid are now coming together to work collaboratively. They will be working on and talking about their current projects during Monday night’s Open Studio session.

Update: The Gig Poster Project

We just reached the halfway point of our in-school workshops for The Gig Poster Project. Teaching Artists Johnny Sampson and Phil Parcellano have been working with students at Perspective’s Math and Science Academy and Chicago Talent Development High School. They will soon head to Little Village to work at Farragut Career Academy.

Classroom teacher, Ms. Farr says “Thank you all for creating a wonderful opportunity for our scholars to express themselves. I cannot say enough how awesome Phil and Johnny were to our students. Of course, now that it is over, students are asking when they will be back.”

Jorge Lucero, UofI

This fall, Spudnik Press will again be hosting Portfolio Day, a unique opportunity for artists to get their work in front of professional curators and educators. Guest reviewers, including Jessica Cochran, Curator of Exhibitions at Center for Book and Paper Arts, and Steven Bridges, Curatorial Assistant at the MCA will take a critical look at the artwork of participating members, drawing from their unique experiences and expertise.

This event is a continuation of our mission to unite new and young artists with established artists and professionals through approachable and inviting formats. There are only thirteen spaces available, so early registration is encouraged (below).

Any artists creating print-based artwork and works on paper are encouraged to sign up soon. All artists, instructors, students, and supporters of the arts are invited to attend as well, meet new artists, and see the work they have been crafting. All day, there will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and Spudnik Press members will be eager to share their art.

Sessions begin at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00pm. Artists may bring works on paper and works incorporating fine art prints (avoid giclees and inkjet prints please). Each artist will have time to meet with all three reviewers.

To register, please call 312-563-0302 or e-mail Brandy Barker at brandy@spudnikpress.com. Entry fee can be paid in person, mailed, or purchased below, through Paypal.

Deadline to register and pay applicable entry fee is Friday, November 2, 2012, or when spaces are full. Time assignments will be confirmed November 7. Please include your name, telephone number, mailing address and email address.

Payments can also be sent to::

More about the reviewers:
Steven L. Bridges is a curator based in Chicago, where he is Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art. In addition to working at the museum, Bridges is also co-curating the inaugural edition of Rapid Pulse, an international performance art festival in Chicago. Recently he also co-curated the 2012 MFA exhibition at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Jessica Cochran is an art administrator, curator, freelance writer, and serves on the Junior Board of Threewalls. Her curatorial projects include venues such as The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, Center for Book and Paper Arts, Art Chicago NEXT, and Around the Coyote.

Jorge Lucero is now an Assistant Professor of Art Education at The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He completed his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University after having taught in the Chicago Public Schools for seven years. Jorge did his undergraduate studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), concentrating in painting and drawing and—during an additional year and half—in art education. He is K-12 art certified in the state of Illinois.

His current research is concerned with the interstices of contemporary art practices with distinctly pedagogical properties (e.g. conceptual art, performance art, participatory and socially engaged art) and how those modes of operation propose alternative approaches to making, learning, relationships, ethics, spirituality, generativity, and civic engagement. Jorge is currently writing about how these educationally-reminiscent forms of contemporary art practice function as permissions for a teaching practice that is also a highly sophisticated art practice. Coming from a studio practice, Jorge’s research has unfolded from a desire to understand the confluence between his research activities (sometimes identified as art) and his teaching persona.

Jorge doesn’t teach and “make art on the side”, he has identified a strategy–through conceptual art practices–where his teaching and creative practices are the same thing.

EMBARC (Empowering Minds, Building Achievement and Reconnecting Communities) aims to “empower students with knowledge and positive models so that they will demand success of themselves and be able to lead and mentor others.”
