4 Year Anniversary

Four Years & Still Growing
Spudnik Press Fundraiser & Celebration
Saturday, July 30, 2011

at Spudnik Press Cooperative
Silent Auction 6-10 pm
Live Auction at 9:30 pm

Ice cream tasting with Nice Cream
Corn dogs from Corn Dog Guy
Block Printed T-shirts made on site
Giveaways for first 50 guests

After a record-breaking year of growth, Spudnik Press is fired up for their annual auction. Just concluding their fourth year, the community print shop has reached many milestones. This spring, the studio expanded their facilities and received 501(c)3 status, sprouting additional presses for letterpress and offset printing and private studios. The additional space has cultivated more classes, larger exhibitions, publishing projects, and donation-based workshops. Increased staff and volunteers are allowing the studio to tend to these programs while planting seeds for next season.

The four-year anniversary will capture the celebratory spirit with free prints to the first 50 guests. Corn Dog Guy will be frying up traditional and vegan corn dogs on site. Nice Cream is sponsoring dessert with a tasting of their summer flavors full of organic ingredients from local farms. A small donation to the press ($15) allows visitors to choose a customized T-shirt printed on demand from a selection of hand-carved woodblocks.

The main event is the auction, bringing 25+ of Chicago’s best printmakers under one roof. The silent auction, including the majority of the artwork, will continue through 10pm. The highlight of the night will be the live auction, featuring Struwwelpeter, a new artist book by Sanya Glisic and a collection of posters by the celebrated Delicious Design League.

Contributions will support upgrading our etching press, expanding our hours, and increasing the quantity and quality of programs we are able to offer our community.

Celebrating the Art Centers of Chicago

Hosted by WBEZ as part of their Off Air Event Series

Chicago Cultural Center
Saturday December 3, 2011

From Hyde Park to Pilsen to Ravenswood, there are amazing places of art exhibition, classes and public events fostering the development of art and culture located throughout Chicago. Each unique location has its own style, feel, and expertise. These places champion the city’s commitment for local residents to learn and create original art, and are as Chicago as the World’s Fair and Vienna Beef Hot Dogs.

Alongside these neighborhood spaces, Chicago hosts the nation’s first free municipal cultural center, which first opened its doors in 1893. The Chicago Cultural Center is one of the city’s most popular attractions, featuring more than 1,000 programs and exhibitions covering a wide range of the performing, visual and literary arts.

In celebration of Chicago’s rich landscape devoted to emerging artists, art education, and the opportunity to inspire and become inspired, WBEZ invites you to the Chicago Cultural Center to join us in exploring these spaces and the role they play in shaping the artist in each of us. Each Center will demonstrate the creative activities that enrich their community. “What’s Your Art” is free to the public and is an opportunity for Chicago residents to experience art as a part of daily life. Visit each Center’s page to find out more about classes and events that will be held in the months before the “What’s Your Art” event.

Member Highlight: Fraser Taylor’s exhibition “Structural Intimacies”

Structural Intimacies

Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery
Moraine Valley College
Palos Hills,IL 60465-2478

Oct. 17-Nov. 10
Reception: Thursday, Oct. 20, 2-4 p.m.

This new series of monotypes printed in 2011 at the Spudnik Press in Chicago continues Taylor’s exploration into how the mono-tonalities of black can capture elusive emotions, tensions and shifts in weight, depth and consequence.

The artist’s combination of tonal surfaces with sinuous white line evokes the murky densities and intimacies of the body, the depths of psychic territories, the debris of human endeavor.

The MDW Fair presents a Fall Showcase of solo and duo exhibitions curated by small not-for-profits, artist-run spaces, independent galleries, collectives and curators from around the country.

Jessica Taylor Caponigro and B. Ingrid Olson are both past Artists in Residence at Spudnik Press Cooperative. They have been creating print-based artworks that eschew traditional multiples in favor of unique pieces that examine the very notion of reproductions. Although they have not yet had the opportunity to exhibit in tandem, their work has many parallel qualities. By pairing these artists together, we will establish a dialog about the act of recreating and the inescapable beauty and failure of doing so.

Each year, Spudnik Press introduces over 60 artists to printmaking processes like Screenprinting, Relief printing and Intaglio. Our student body is diverse, bringing an astounding array of experiences to the classroom. Students often bring advanced skills in graphic design, painting, photography, and other creative fields. Other students are making artwork for the first time in many years, reclaiming ownership of the handmade. We are constantly surprised by the caliber of work coming from Introductory classes, and are always excited to follow up on what past students have done with the foundation skills they learned at the studio.

In this vein, this fall we will be celebrating the educational component of Spudnik Press with an exhibition of artwork by Spudnik Press students and teachers. Newbie Not Novice includes work creating within classes as well as new work by students who continue to incorporate printmaking into their practice. We will also be highlighting Spudnik’s teaching artists, and the experiences they bring to our classes.
