Our most interactive theme yet, it is sure to please. We will facilitate group and solo drawings based on games created by Brenton, Duchamp, Aragon, and other Surrealist and Dada artists.

Drink and Draw is our monthly night devoted to drawing practices. There’s no teacher and no pretensions. We provide a theme for the evening and plenty of PBR. Attendees provide a sketchbook and drawing utensils. Please come, and bring your friends while your at it.

We are proud to announce our Spring 2009 Resident Artists: Paul Nudd and Onsmith! They will have full use of the studio from March 1 through June 1. We can’t wait to see what they create!

Nudd and Onsmith each have developed individual styles of illustration that are engaging in their own right. When the two join forces, a dialog is created between the opposing styles and imagery, and the art takes a turn towards the witty, surprising, and refreshing. It is clear that the two artists are being pushed an pulled in ways that can only strengthen their own artistic abilities.

Paul Nudd was born in Harpenden, England in 1976. He graduated in 2001 with an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Recent exhibitions include Jack the Pelican Presents, Brooklyn, Western Exhibitions, Chicago and the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago.

Onsmith is a cartoonist and illustrator living in Chicago. His comics, prints, and illustrations have appeared in The Chicago Reader, The Portland Mercury, The Common Review, Oxford American Magazine, Hotwire Comics (Fantagraphics Books), Vice Magazine, Graphics Classics, both volumes of Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons & True Stories, and may also be viewed at http://www.onsmithcomics.blogspot.com He most recently began showing his art in galleries as well as curating a show of comics.

If you were born after 1979 and before 1988, you must be a twenty-something. Twenty-somethings weren’t around for the Kennedy assassination. Didn’t gape at the Watergate scandal. Didn’t cheer on the space race. But these people born between the years of 1979 and 1988, will shape the future, despite not being around for the past.

What defines this demographic? What qualities are projected onto 20-somethings or what are 20-somethings projecting? What does it mean to be in this tender age of budding adulthood? Are we young, and naive, or grown and insightful? And if we addressed this in our art (do we address this in our art?), what would it look like?

Spudnik Press decided to find out. We invited 20 “emerging” artists from Chicago and beyond to participate in the print exchange Tender Twenties.

Last week we experienced the first Drink and Draw at Spudnik. It was a huge success with over 20 people in attendance. The phrase “It feels so great to draw again.” was overheard many times, and we decided to continue the series, which will meet the first Wednesday of every month (save for holidays), and feature a different beverage. We will also rotate the emphasis of the evening’s drawing session, highlighting themes such as gestural drawing, cartoons and comics, self-portraiture, and life drawing. There’s no teacher, and there’s no pretension.

January’s Drink and Draw will focus on Red Wine and contour drawing. We will provide some pencils, charcoal, and a still life, and (this time around), a variety of Red Wines. You bring a sketchbook and enjoy drawing in the company of others.

$5 suggested donation.

The results are in: Our housewarming party was a success. October 18th, many many friends dropped in, and we made some new friends too. We couldn’t be more pleased. I took a leap of faith that if I moved Spudnik into a space that could accommodate more printers, more printers would want to use Spudnik, and it all seems to be working out…

This fall, Spudnik Press moved into a larger space devoted solely to the Press. With this change of venue comes the launch of many new programs and opportunities, such as an Artist Residency, monthly memberships, more classes, more events, and even a blog to help keep printmakers informed about shows, exchanges, and interesting new work.

To celebrate this milestone in our trajectory, we will be hosting a night of print-related activities. This housewarming event will showcase work from a myriad of artists have have used our space to create work over the last year. All work will be for sale, starting at just 25 cents for 2 inch prints (sold out of a capsule machine!), and most work will be priced between $10 and $50. There will be an intaglio demonstration by Director Angee Lennard. Those who come celebrate with us are also encouraged to participate in the art-making by printing their own monoprint. And as with all of our events, we’ll have plenty of food, drinks, and music. We hope to use this event to celebrate the vibrant art community in our city, and in particular, the incredibly supportive community that exists among contemporary printmakers.

If you are unfamiliar with the shop, read about who we are and what we do at Spudnik Press (www.spudnikpress.com). Our main initiative is to provide affordable and approachable access to the tools and equipment required to work in the field of printmaking, and to encourage the community to utilize printmaking as an art-making medium and tool for democratic dissemination of art and ideas.

In conclusion we’d like to ask you to join us October 18, as we show off our new space, celebrate how far we’ve come in just over a year, as well as how far we plan to go.

The 3-D Print Show and Exchange is being shown on the East Coast at Artichoke’s in New Brunswick. Artichoke’s is a fantastic alternative venue ran by Post-Neo-Absurdists of New Jersey. What is Post-Neo-Absurdism? Well, we could define it with adjectives frequently used to describe art-related matters, such as “interdisciplinary”, or “contemporary”, or “raw”. But those terms do no justice to this ever-expanding group or artists, writers, musicians, etcetera.
