Art fairs can sometimes be an overwhelming experience due to the sheer amount of artwork on display and the large crowds that they draw. However, don’t let this deter you from being part of the excitement this fall art season and join us for a private tour of EXPO CHICAGO (September 27-30, 2018), led by esteemed colleague Susan Musich.

Susan will orient our group of Spudnik Press members to the fair’s layout and highlight specific galleries among the 2018 exhibitors (Spudnik included!), as well as top artists and artworks. Additionally, during our 60 minute tour, our members will have personalized access to gallery owners and representatives and tailored information about site-specific artworks and exhibitions. The 2018 edition of EXPO CHICAGO will align with Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art, to present various programs and events throughout EXPO ART WEEK (September 24–30, 2018) including panel discussions, performances, and activations across the city. This program is part of our Professional Practice: Off-site Visit series, intended to introduce members to the numerous and diverse art spaces and individuals that contribute to Chicago’s vibrant arts landscape. In addition to connecting with other professionals in the city, these visits present our members with a range of resources and career paths.

Susan Musich Bio:

Susan Musich is Executive Director of Homeroom, a collaborative, multidisciplinary arts organization. In addition to her role at Homeroom, she manages the tour program at EXPO CHICAGO and is an independent contractor providing content-based, communications, philanthropic, and board development services to arts organizations and foundations. Musich spent 20 years at the Museum of Contemporary Art as an educator and programmer. She was the MCA’s primary lecturer, managed the docent program, created interpretive materials, and worked with art historians, artists, and curators to produce public programs.

Guest Reviewer: Elizabeth Lalley

In an effort to continue our mission to unite our community of printmakers with art professionals throughout the Chicagoland area we are launching a revised edition of our portfolio reviews this 2018. Professional Practice: Portfolio Review will consist of a 30-minute, individual portfolio review with a curator, educator, gallery director, or arts administrator.

This is a unique opportunity for artists to receive feedback on a current body of work or upcoming project, as well as suggestions on how to prepare for other professional opportunities.

Elizabeth Lalley Bio:
Elizabeth Lalley is a Chicago-based writer and independent curator, and the Assistant Director of Goldfinch Projects. She received an MA in Museum & Exhibition Studies from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and holds a BA from the University of Michingan where she received the Academy of American Poets Award. Lalley has worked for the Chicago Artists Coalition, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage, and the University of Michigan Department of English. She is a Curatorial Fellow with ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) and a contributor to Newcity and Chicago Artist Writers.

Have you ever wondered what an art collector thinks about when looking for their next acquisition? What excites them about collecting?

What are the places and spaces collectors visit when looking for new artists?

Have you, as an artist, thought about what you can do to facilitate a relationship with a collector?

Or are you someone interested in starting an art collection, but don’t know how?

If any of these questions have crossed your mind, this June we have a very special opportunity to visit and speak with collector Browne Goodwin. An avid art collector and supporter for more than 45 years, Browne will speak with our members about how he started collecting with his wife and what it is about fostering the career of an artist that he most enjoys. He will also share some of the risks they took with their collection and what he does to stay in touch with artists, galleries, and other maker spaces. In addition to receiving a tour of his collection, members will have an opportunity to guide our discussion with Browne and ask questions of their own.

Browne Goodwin Bio:
Browne Goodwin has been an art collector and supporter (with his wife until her death in 2014) for more than 45 years. Involved with many art organizations over the years, Browne is currently a Spudnik Press Cooperative Board Member, is part of the Chicago Artists Coalition Annual Committee, and participates in several museum support groups. His collection includes some 300 works of art in all media, with an emphasis on contemporary art from emerging artists in the communities where he has lived – Los Angeles, Austin, and Chicago. Fine prints form a major portion of the collection, and continue to be added. Browne’s collection will be exhibited at the Illinois State Museum Gallery in Lockport, IL in October of this year.

Transportation to and from this off-site visit will be available to members without a vehicle. Members! This summer we are very excited to be organizing a super fun all Chicago event, the Chicago Print Crawl. The crawl part includes a self-guided tour of printmaking production, publishing, exhibition and sales venues throughout the City of Chicago. We’ve already got more than a dozen stops on the tour. Naturally, Spudnik is one of them.

The Chicago Print Crawl takes place Sunday, June 24, 2018 from 12-6 pm with an after party for all the venues and participants from 6-8pm.

The Spudnik stop will include shop tours, print activities, and a parking lot party with music, food, and cold beverages. Most importantly though, is the opportunity for you to show and sell your work.  The art market portion of the event (and After Party) will be located at the beautiful new Low Res Studios on the first floor. Air-conditioned and no worries if the weather is crappy. We look forward to highlighting the member participants as we promote the event.

The fee covers the cost of a table and a chair. Artist are responsible for their own signage, sales, packaging, etc. If you want to bring a friend to work the table with you, you’ll want to bring that second seat.

We invite you to venture into the world of visionary artist Karolina Gnatowski, as she welcomes us into her studio for a private viewing of her work and discussion on best practices for artists. With a solo exhibition scheduled to open at a local museum in 2019, we will learn about her trajectory as an artist and what it takes to prepare for a project of this scale. This is also a wonderful opportunity for our members to hear from Karolina on the topic of maintaining an active studio practice, and gain further insight into how one can navigate and establish meaningful connections in the art world.

Karolina Gnatowski Bio:
Karolina Gnatowski is an artist living and working in Chicago. Exhibitions include shows at Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago; Gallery 400, Chicago; Loyola University Gallery, Chicago; The Franklin, Chicago; Adult Contemporary, Chicago; DoubeBreak, San Diego; SideCar, Hammond, IN; Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; Weglowa Gallery, Bialystok, Poland; Northern Illinois University; Lollapalooza, Chicago. Gnatowski is faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Fiber and Material Studies Department. She holds a BFA from the University of Arts, Philadelphia and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Meg Duguid Bio:
Meg Duguid believes that documentation is paramount to her art making and is invested in the ways that documentation and art can be integrated in a single practice. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from Bard College. She has performed and exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 6018 NORTH, Slow Gallery, the Mission, Terrain, Roman Susan, the Chicago Cultural Center, and Defibrillator Performance Art Space in Chicago, as well as the DUMBO Arts Festival in Brooklyn, 667 Shotwell in San Francisco, and the Zona Maco Art Fair in Mexico City. Duguid has screened work at Synthetic Zero in New York, Spiderbug in Chicago, and the Last Supper Festival in Brooklyn. From 2009 to 2011 she ran Clutch Gallery, a 25-square-inch white cube located in the heart of her purse; since then, she lends her purse to others to curate and carry. Duguid is a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago and lives and works in Chicago with her husband, her son, and two cats.

Please join us for an intimate gathering with Director and Chief Curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm at the DePaul Art Museum, as we discuss her role at the museum and within the broader context of the art community. Rodrigues Widholm will also address the role curators play in advancing the careers of artists, share tips for a successful studio visit and portfolio review, and answer additional questions from our members. Immediately following our conversation, Spudnik members will enjoy a brief curator-led tour of the three print-based exhibitions currently on view at the museum: Barbara Jones-Hogu: Resist, Relate, Unite 1968-1975, Rock, Paper, Image: Lithographs by Clinton Adams and June Wayne from the Belverd and Marian Needles Collection, and Jose Guerrero, Presente: A Memorial Print Portfolio.

Julie Rodrigues Widholm Bio:
Julie Rodrigues Widholm is Director and Chief Curator of DePaul Art Museum where she leads the strategic and artistic vision to promote equity and interdisciplinary education in the arts, while positioning Chicago as a global art city. Her work seeks to expand the canon by providing a platform for marginalized practices, voices and experiences. Prior to taking the helm at DPAM in September 2015, she was Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art. There she curated major solo exhibitions of work by Rashid Johnson, Amalia Pica, Cauleen Smith, Kathryn Andrews, Amanda Ross-Ho, and co-curated Doris Salcedo’s touring retrospective, along with several thematic exhibitions including Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art in Mexico City and Unbound: Contemporary Art after Frida Kahlo. She has also been a strong advocate for Chicago-based artists for the last two decades. Current projects include the first solo exhibition of print work by AfriCOBRA artist Barbara Jones-Hogu and a two-person exhibition of Tamarind Institute co-founders June Wayne and Clinton Adams. She is currently organizing solo exhibitions on the work of Beverly Fre$h, Karolina Gnatowski and Julia Fish.

Rodrigues Widholm has served as a juror and panelist for organizations including the Headlands Center for the Arts, Mcknight Foundation, Artadia, Creative Capital, and the Peggy Nohl Fellowship, among others. She has been a visiting critic at national universities, a graduate advisor, given numerous public talks, and has written extensively on contemporary art. In 2015 and 2017, she was named one of Chicago’s ART50 Visual Vanguard by New City. During the 2016-2017 academic year, she was a Senior Fellow in the Institute for Curatorial Research and Practice at the School of the Art Institute Chicago. She holds a BA in Art History and Political Science from the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana and an MA in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute.

Joining us for our first portfolio review of the year is Chicago-based visual artist, curator, educator, and musician Jordan Martins.

Jordan Martins Bio:
Martins received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil in 2007, and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and North Park University. He is the executive director of Comfort Station, a multi-disciplinary art space. Martins’s visual work is based in collage processes, including mixed media two dimensional work, photography, video and installation, and he has exhibited nationally and internationally. He is co-director of the Perto da Lá, a biennial multidisplinary art event with international artists in Salvador, Brazil.  From 2014 to 2016 he served on the programming committee for the Chicago Jazz Festival. He was a resident in the Chicago Artists Coalition’s HATCH program in 2013, a mentor for their LAUNCH program in 2016 and 2017, and currently serves on their Educational Advisory Panel.

The 2017 Annual Benefit, our largest fundraiser of the year, aims to raise $25,000 to be invested in our studio and our programs. Each year, the event’s art auction draws over 100 collectors, curators, and arts professionals to support Spudnik, bid on art, and discover emerging artists.

New in 2017, the auction will include dedicated Member Section, juried by the esteemed arts writer, Jason Foumberg (Art Forum, Art in America, Chicago Magazine). Selected artworks will be framed, compliments of Blick Lincoln Park.

Past benefit attendees include curators from the MCA, DePaul Art Museum, AIC, Hyde Park Art Center, as well as dozens of gallerists and private collectors. This opportunity provides members with a platform to reach new followers as well as a way to support the studio. Each member featured in the auction will receive complimentary admission to the benefit. 100% Sales from the Member Benefit Auction will go support Spudnik Press Cooperative.

In addition to the Member Section of the benefit auction, the Annex gallery will feature the Annual Member Exhibition, peer juried by the member-led Exhibitions Committee. Every artist that submits artwork will have at least one artwork included in either the auction or the exhibition.

To Participate:

1. Drop off up to five unique artwork by Saturday, July 15.
2. When dropping off art, fill out and attach a label to each piece. Ask staff or monitors for assistance.
3. All artwork will first be reviewed by Jason Foumberg for inclusion in the Annual Benefit auction.
4. Artwork will then be reviewed by the Exhibitions Committee for inclusion in the Annual Members Exhibition.
5. Members will be notified of acceptance into both opportunities by August 1.
6. Save the date for the October 7 Benefit! Artists selected for the Member Section of the auction will receive one complimentary ticket ($40 value) and access to discounted tickets for their guests.

Requirements:

•    Participating artists must be current Spudnik Press members.
•    There is no participation or entry fee.
•    Participants may submit up to five artworks.
•    Artwork dimensions must not exceed 22×30”.
•    Recent artwork is preferred.

Guest Curator:

Jason Foumberg is Chicago Magazine’s contributing art critic, and he has written about contemporary Chicago art for Artforum.com, Photograph, Art Papers, Frieze, and Art in America, as well as exhibition catalogue essays for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Threewalls, Columbia College Chicago, the Loyola University Museum of Art, the DePaul Art Museum, Valerie Carberry Gallery, and the Chicago Artists Coalition. He is currently curator at the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation.

The Spudnik Press Exhibitions Committee is member-driven and provides a platform for our members to take the lead in the curatorial process for all Spudnik Press Exhibitions. Only in its second year, the Exhibitions Committee is a constantly evolving committee composed of members who are committed to advancing exhibitions at Spudnik Press Cooperative. It acts as a steering committee for all Exhibitions-related opportunities, assists with execution of all components of the Exhibitions Program and, to the extent of its ability, acts as an advocate for exhibitions within and beyond Spudnik Press.

More specifically, the committee reviews all exhibition proposals, selecting which proposals will be offered as part of the annual Exhibition Calendar, and contributes to the development of additional programs offered in conjunction with each show, such as artist talks, workshops and opportunities for our members. Each year the committee coordinates the Annual Member Exhibition, bringing energy and innovation to this group exhibition opportunity.  In addition, committee members have the opportunity to develop an additional exhibition of their choosing, which could take the form of a portfolio exchange, an invitational exhibition, bringing a traveling exhibition to our gallery, or jurying a thematic exhibition.

The Exhibitions Committee is fully backed by Spudnik Press staff who lead meetings, manages all exhibitions, handles budgets, etc. Committee members are asked to volunteer with various stages of each exhibition, including installation, photography and event assistance, approximately 6-8 hours per year.

By joining the committee, members are committing to a one-year positions with the option to renew each calendar year.

Requirements:

• Must maintain a current membership at Spudnik Press Cooperative throughout 2017.

• Strongly encouraged to volunteer for 6-8 hours in the production of exhibition programs. Members can select volunteer activities that best suit their skills, interests and availability.
