Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Paper Potluck

Guest Artist: Mary Clare Butler

It’s physical, sensual, emotional — even spiritual. Everybody does it and everybody needs it. That’s right, we’re talking about FOOD! This Drink & Draw we will turn our favorite quarantine foods into beautifully illustrated recipe cards to send to friends and family (or to just decorate our kitchens). Mary Clare Butler will show us how to incorporate food-themed typefaces and paper cutouts for extra punch. There’s really nothing quite like a handmade recipe card (making it or receiving it!) to bring a precious moment of pleasure and certainty to the day. We’ll also do a recipe swap so you can get some fresh ideas! Come join us for a lovely evening of fun, food, and art.

Suggested Materials:

  • A recipe or two (anything from cereal to soufflé)
  • index cards or paper (the thicker and more colorful the better)
  • pens, pencils, markers, crayons, paints
  • scissors, cutting tool, cutting mat, glue/stick (optional)

Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Visual Resistance: The People’s Graphic Workshop & Revolutionary Printmaking

Guest Artist: Atlan Arceo-Witzl

Atlan Arceo-Witzl welcomes you to a night of political print history and new political art making! Beginning with an exciting introduction to the famous Mexican workshop and artist collective Taller Gráfico Popular (The People’s Graphic Workshop), Atlan will inspire us with the many ways that artists and activists have used print and design for social justice, building community, distributing graphics for revolutionary movements.

Next we will move into our own political art making. Maybe you want to make a collage, poster, or slick infographic about racial justice or public health. Or you might get inspired to draw satirical cartoons or make one of their present-day cousins: The Meme! This Drink & Draw will be a chance to give your ideas some direction and bounce them off other creative folks, whatever stage they’re in. We’ll share what we’re working through right now and leave with clear, strong imagery to take out into our current moment.

Atlan Arceo-Witzl is a Mexican-American visual artist and creator whose work is concerned with everyday rituals, icons, symbols, objects, and language. In his artistic practice, his current points of focus are the cultural production of print ephemera, craft of the sign-painting industry, redefining “American” through a Latinx lens, and documenting/ recording of events across multiple mediums/ languages. He is a graduate of Skidmore College with a Bachelors of Science in Studio Art with a concentration in relief printmaking and sculpture. He lives in Chicagoland, IL pursuing a career in the arts and education while enjoying the fascinating human game of communication.

Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Conjuring Narrative

Guest Artist: Rob Kelsey

This event has been postponed to July 29 from its original date on June 3.

In this Drink & Draw, we will juxtapose our own invented illustrations on top of modern, found materials to force the unreal into the real, and weave the extraordinary into the mundane. Join artist Rob Kelsey for a night conjuring up supernatural elements of the mythical past who will haunt, reclaim, and repurpose mass produced capitalist goods! The current technological era has filled our lives with “objective” things like photographs, machines, and consumer products. How can we manipulate these to revive the disappearing magic of folklore, mythology, and fantasy? Rob will show us how this form of art making can be a deep exercise in storytelling. By adding something new and unexpected to our objects, we change their history and watch new narratives emerge — sometimes in ways we will only discover once we’ve finished.
