Drink & Draw April : Memes

In this internet age, where binge watching an eight-season television show in a single weekend is common and celebrated, and videos are shared and forgotten in no time at all, it can be difficult to make sure your references land. The last thing you want to do is face the awkwardness of telling a friend that you’re “back at it at Krispy Kreme” only to be met with blank, unknowing stares. Join us for a night of art to celebrate all the pop culture references that we love, and make some art based on your favorite shows, memes, movies and other assorted internet ephemera. We’ll provide the materials and guidance from talented (and hilariously quirky) artist Alicia Obermeyer; you provide your very specific sense of humor!

Alicia Obermeyer is an artist living and working in Chicago. Her projects include one-off drawing zines and immersive installations investigating celebrity, camp, and femme iconography with a psychotic cartoon aesthetic. She exhibits in local small press expos with a collective of artists called “Pubes & ‘Tudes.” Recently she has released a collaborative drawing book with two other artists, and is co-editing an anthology of drawings by regional femme freaks to debut at CAKE. She co-organizes a DIY art space called Learning Machine, located in Bridgeport.

Drink and Draw is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices. There are no pretensions, no prerequisites, and newcomers are always welcome. Bring a sketchbook and basic drawing materials, and invite your friends! Drink & Draw occurs the first Wednesday of every other month and features a special theme and a guest artist. Admission to Drink & Draw is a $10 suggested donation. The event is BYOB, but we do have some wine and beer available with a donation.
