T-Shirts & Totebags Screenprinting Workshop

Convert your own drawing or design to a collection of hand-printed wearable items in this energetic and informative one-day workshop. Printing an assortment of t-shirts or totebags is practical, fun and incredibly gratifying!

Students will bring to the workshops with a bold black and white drawing, a high-contrast photo, or a digital design. While .AI or .PSD files are great, we welcome students to bring anything from text typed in Microsoft Word to photocopies! After students refine the artwork (as needed) to be “print-ready”, student will use a pre-coated photographic screen and mix their own custom ink color. Everyone is encouraged to bring five items of their choosing to print. As long as they are fabric and flat, we can help you print on it! T-shirts, tote bags, tea towels, bandanas, and thrift store jean jackets, will work great. Leave with a sample for an Etsy store, a surprise gift for a friend, or an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags!

Screenprinting 201: T-Shirts & Textiles

Knowing how to screen print on fabric opens up a slew of opportunities. Designing custom apparel, creating gifts for friends, family or Etsy, making unique yardage for sewing projects, and manufacturing your own kickstarter rewards are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to potential fabric printing projects!

Students will apply their skills and experience printing on paper to printing textiles and learn how the fiber and weave of a fabric affect printing, what alterations need to be considered when designing for fabric, plus tips for coating, exposing and washing out screens. The class will cover two styles of printing and registration: tabletop printing and printing with a carousel t-shirt press.

Printing with water-based fabric inks has specific limitations as well as some benefits. Through this class, students will learn the difference between water-based and plastisol inks, advantages and disadvantages for small and large projects. Plus, students will have the opportunity to share projects and ideas with peers in order to push their artwork in new directions!

Screenprinting on Apparel

This foundational class introduces all the basic fabric printing skills needed to get someone new to the process of screenprinting up and running. With a focus on printing shirts and other apparel, this class is ideal for people interested in producing their own t-shirt designs, creating merchandise for bands, or other commercial printing endeavors.

Beginning with an overview of the full process, students will learn how to use our darkroom to transfer their design onto a screen, mix ink, print, and clean and reclaim screens. As the class continues, students will explore how to best design for printing on fabric, how to consider ink and fabric color interactions, and tips for efficiently producing high-quality prints.

Students will learn work exclusively with water-based ink, and will learn the benefits and considerations of this earth-friendly material. As a culminating project, each student will be able to complete a run of two-color t-shirts using our t-shirt press in combination with a flash drier and heat press to cure the ink.  By the end of this class, students will know their way around the print shop and be authorized to continue printing independently at Spudnik Press Cooperative through our Open Studio program.

Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Rococo: Floral Dyeing

This September, Drink & Draw explores Rococo! We will be working through modern renditions of this artistic style featuring the classic elements of nature and floral patterns depicted through soft colors and curvy, botanical shapes.

Guest Artist: Taylor Augustine

Rococo art and design was rich in scenes of nature and lilting botanical forms. Florals were especially highlighted through wallpapering, murals and fabric patterning. What better way to continue to explore those delicately placed details than through dyeing with flowers in their natural form? Taylor Augustine will be sharing her passion for nature and leading us through the art of Bundle Dyeing: a holistic, magical approach to fabric patterning. These functional artworks will be beautiful additions to your home or wardrobe as well as make great gifts. So gather your unadorned linens, tea towels, t-shirts, and soft wearables and collect some spices, flowers, and leaves and join us for this alchemical event.

Suggested Materials:

  • Fabric: used or new linens, t-shirts, skirts, table runners, etc
  • Flowers or any organic matter, such as dried chili peppers, turmeric & paprika
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Rubber bands
  • Pot and stove top
  • place to store for drying (indirect sunlight is best)

Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Rococo: Wearable Renditions

This September, Drink & Draw explores Rococo! We will be working through modern renditions of this artistic style featuring the classic elements of nature and floral patterns depicted through soft colors and curvy, botanical shapes.

Guest Artist: Grace Makuch

Originating in France during the 1730s, Rococo was an artistic style that sought to push the boundaries of the formal and geometric decorative style during that time. As an homage to that exceptionally ornamental style, Grace Makuch will walk us through a modern approach to Rococo by applying it’s whimsical design to clothing. For this event, she will be sharing the ornamental, abstracted elements of her artist practice by cutting out botanic shapes drawn on contact paper, applying them to t-shirts, and then bleaching those shapes into the fabric through bleach painting and drawing with bleach pens. Together, we will create unique wearables inspired by the art of Rococo with a modern twist.

Suggested Materials:

  • Blank T-shirts or any article of clothing or fabric
  • Bleach and bleach Pens

* Please work in a ventilated area due to bleach chemical fumes.

  • Paintbrushes
  • Contact Paper
  • Copy Paper
  • X-acto knife or scissors
  • Plastic bag to protect surfaces from bleach
  • Rubber Gloves

Optional Materials:

  • 3-D Fabric Paint
  • Fabric Markers
  • Reference images of anything strange you’ve taken a picture of on your phone.
  • A short list of the weirdest dreams you’ve ever had 🙂
