Drink & Draw [VIRTUAL]: Somatics for Drawing

Guest Artist: Blake Nemec

This workshop will use somatic (body-based) prompts as a portal into new ways of drawing. Somatics focuses on what lies beneath thoughts or emotions in our physical bodies and can be a powerful method for self-exploration and abstraction. Using words from some preliminary somatic exercises, this session will help you translate sensory experiences into narrative imagery. Please come with items that you already use for making art, some kind of raw food, and an item from your bedroom. We will use abstraction as a visual prism that lets us translate and transform sensory observations into maps, images, storyboards, and more. Whether you enjoy drawing, writing, or comics, this workshop will playfully guide you from your present physical realities into new imaginings.

Blake Nemec is a writer, teacher, sound recordist, and community health care worker. He is the author of Sharing Plastic and ongoing articles supporting abolition and the decriminalization of unprotected bodies.
