2015 Woodblock Design Competition

Woodblock Printed T-Shirts have long been a staple of Spudnik Press fundraisers and our online store. Each year, we add designs to our t-shirt line.

New in 2015, we invite friends of Spudnik to take on the challenge of designing the 2015 Woodblock, slated to debut at the 2015 Hashbrown. The 2015 Woodblock will be available for printing onto t-shirts, in addition to all new tote bags and handkerchiefs throughout the calendar year.

The parameters are simple:

Guidelines:
Design should be roughly 8″x10″ and must fit on a t-shirt.
Work samples should include examples of relief prints.
The selected artist is expected to execute the design as a relief woodblock.
Spudnik Press Cooperative will provide birch plywood.
Deadline to apply is Friday 1/4/2015
Winning design will be announced by 1/12/15
Carved woodblock is due by 2/15/15
Selected artist will receive complimentary printed swag, 2 VIP passes to The Hashbrown, and will be featured online.

To Apply:
Submit an image of the proposed design (i.e. scanned drawing or mock up) and 3 image of past work to angee@spudnikpress.org.
Artists may submit a URL instead of 3 images.
All documentation should be jpegs.

Our most common media for consignment printing is screenprinting, but Spudnik Press’s expansive publishing program frequently encompasses letterpress printmaking and offset productions as well. Our shop is also equipped to produce custom relief printing projects, book-binding, and more! If you have an idea, we have a press.

For more information on our Publishing Program, please contact Ashlee or Angee at publishing@spudnikpress.org

Young Artist Exhibition

Spudnik Press presents
Young Artist Exhibition
An Exhibition of Artwork from our Young Artist Program
January 21 – February 18, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 6-8pm
The exhibition will be held at Spudnik Press,
1821 W Hubbard, Suite 302

This Fall, Spudnik Press offered our first in-house printmaking class, free of charge, specifically for youth. Five talented students worked with teaching artist Elke Claus over 10 weeks, to study illustration, graphic design and screenprinting. The class culminated in creating a collaborative portfolio combining hand-drawn imagery and photographic elements to create colorful expressive screenprints.

Please join us in celebrating the work of these talented young artists.

In addition to the exhibition, we are inviting guests to participate in the art-making. We will help guests screen print t-shirts with a student design. Bring your own shirt and all printing is complimentary!

Silent Auction 6-10 pm
Live Auction at 9:30 pm

Ice cream tasting with Nice Cream
Corn dogs from Corn Dog Guy
Block Printed T-shirts made on site
Giveaways for first 50 guests

After a record-breaking year of growth, Spudnik Press is fired up for their annual auction. Just concluding their fourth year, the community print shop has reached many milestones. This spring, the studio expanded their facilities and received 501(c)3 status, sprouting additional presses for letterpress and offset printing and private studios. The additional space has cultivated more classes, larger exhibitions, publishing projects, and donation-based workshops. Increased staff and volunteers are allowing the studio to tend to these programs while planting seeds for next season.

The four-year anniversary will capture the celebratory spirit with free prints to the first 50 guests. Corn Dog Guy will be frying up traditional and vegan corn dogs on site. Nice Cream is sponsoring dessert with a tasting of their summer flavors full of organic ingredients from local farms. A small donation to the press ($15) allows visitors to choose a customized T-shirt printed on demand from a selection of hand-carved woodblocks.

The main event is the auction, bringing 25+ of Chicago’s best printmakers under one roof. The silent auction, including the majority of the artwork, will continue through 10pm. The highlight of the night will be the live auction, featuring Struwwelpeter, a new artist book by Sanya Glisic and a collection of posters by the celebrated Delicious Design League.

Contributions will support upgrading our etching press, expanding our hours, and increasing the quantity and quality of programs we are able to offer our community.

We’re OPEN for business!

Today is the big day: Our first open studio in the new space….

Let’s be honest. We are down a few shelving units, we have yet to add glass slabs to our new tables, and we desperately need a couch, but things are looking good. Yesterday the band Picture Books had the honor of being the first to use the studio. They printed some pretty cool T-shirts, and everything went smoothly.

The next few weeks there will continue to be a lot of changes improvements! around the studio, like better screen storage, and a system for having your screen coated for you before you get to the studio (think less waiting around for stuff to dry…). We are also going to roll out a screen rental system so that you don’t have to worry about your image getting blasted out if you can’t make it in for a few weeks. We’ll be hanging more art and hopefully fixing our photocopier…

And here’s a few pictures:

Spudnik Press Print Bazaar

Dec. 1, 2007, Spudnik Press hosted its first print bazaar. It was a cold night; icy and fridgid. But plenty of people braved the weather to see what Spudnik Press is all about. More than 20 printmakers showcased their artistic skills to help support the printshop as well as themselves. Hand-printed items included T-shirts and band posters in addition to traditional prints on paper. Prints were also available for 25 cents from a vending machine. The Cimena Periscope, created by Tim Weidelman, featured the work of Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré (work will be on display through the end of 2007). The etching press was set up to print monoprints. About 40 prints were pulled through out the night. Laura Williams provided vegan treats like carrot cake, brownies, and bean dip.
