Spudnik Press Welcomes 4 New Fellows

The Spudnik Cooperative Fellowship Program provides a novel opportunity for four printmakers to have six months access to all the facilities at Spudnik Press, contribute to the day-to-day success of Spudnik Press through leading our Open Studio program, and giving back to our community through leading donation-based community workshops.

This December we welcome our next cohort of artists. We are excited to bring to Spudnik artists who hail from four different schools located in three different states, and will be working in all corners of the studio. In addition to developing their person body of artwork, each fellow will lead on Open Studio session each week through May 2016.

Stephanie Benhaim is a painter and printmaker born and raised in Miami, Florida. She received her BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon in 2014. Benhaim is known for creating monotype portraits that grapple with themes of diaspora and the erasure of identity. Her works have been published in Jai-Alai Magazine and OTPW Zine Works.

Margaret Hitch is a printmaker, illustrator and sometimes poet hailing from the upper peninsula of Michigan. Last year, she received a BFA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she spent a lot of time with litho stones and birch plywood. Margaret’s print works often illustrate or work in tandem with her poems. Through the fellowship at Spudnik, she hopes to make three small books that experiment with relationships between text and image.

Eliz Kaple is a print and new-media artist based in Chicago, Il.  Her practice relies primarily on printmaking, bookbinding, and video.  Through the use of diagrams and architectural structures, she reimagines planes of perspective and reanimates inadequate spaces. Eliz received her BA in Anthropology from DePaul in 2014.  Her work is held at the DePaul Art Museum and has been exhibited in peripheral spaces in Chicago, Providence, and Indianapolis.

Darian Longmire is an interdisciplinary artist currently living in Chicago IL. He studied visual art and graphic design at Illinois State University, graduating in 2013. His work deals with conceptual approaches to exploring cosmology, the study of the universe. Monoprinting and assemblage currently drive his print based endeavors. Darian will be seeking MFA candidacy at a list of chosen institutions for the fall 2016 term.

A Note from Veronica: Change is in the Air!

Where do I begin?! When I joined Spudnik as Staff two years ago it was with much excitement. I could see that this space was full of energy, ideas and tons of community. Just how much I couldn’t possibly realize until I was thrown in full throttle….and what a ride it’s been!

The amount of growth I’ve witnessed and contributed to has been astounding—from the creation of our Fellowship program, adjustments to our Printing Apprenticeship, to the small behind-the-scenes shifts in how we approach many administrative tasks—it blows me away.

As I leave Spudnik as Staff, it is bittersweet, but also with much excitement. I take great pride in the ways I’ve helped shape Spudnik over the past two years, and I know that this truly amazing place only has more positive change in store. I can’t wait to see it, and be a part of this growth in other capacities.

I’ve learned so much from this position and from all of you who make Spudnik what it is. I’m looking forward to seeing friendly and familiar faces at the shop as I continue to teach and print at Spudnik. So…I’d rather not say goodbye, but rather “Cheers!” Here’s to a new chapter.

The People’s Pamphlets

The People’s Pamphlets is a risograph edition of 25 tri-fold pamphlets by contemporary artists. Brochures are not thematically oriented, rather they animate the interests of each individual artist in a wildly disparate, fantastically in-cohesive manner.

While digitally distributed media has fast usurped pen and paper as a means of communication, certain public spaces remain deeply hospitable to the dynamism and efficacy of print media. Festivals, welcome centers, information kiosks, transit depots, shopping hubs and the like remain stocked with brochures, bi-folds, tri-folds, pamphlets, fliers, and circulars—all free for the indiscriminate taking.

As a curatorial endeavor, the People’s Pamphlets is situated within of history of the artist-brochure in the broader context of artists’ books and ephemera, and considers the continued relevance of print within sites of spectacle, tourism or travel – particularly as these spaces themselves continue to digitize. To that end, the project also operates within the broader history of cultural “festivalism” which has deep roots in grand tours, world’s fairs, biennials and, more recently, trade expositions and art fairs. The name is a nod to the Chicago Cultural Center, which was once coined the “People’s Palace” and remains central a destination for culture and…pamphlets.

The People’s Pamphlets is a 2015 Chicago Artist Month featured event. Leonardo Selvaggio is a 2015 Chicago Artist Month featured artist.
