DIY Greeting Cards: Letterpress Printing (April 2016)

Print your own greeting cards using Spudnik Press’ traditional printing presses. The tactile quality of ink pressed into paper will surely leave an impression on the lucky recipients of your handmade cards!

Students will be able to set their own short saying or phrase and (if desired) combine it with vintage relief blocks featuring festive illustrations. This workshop combines an overview of letterpress printing and history with hands-on art making, and it is a great way to try out a new hobby before taking a longer class. Students can bring any blank cards they desire (so everyone can pick out their favorite size and color). Taking turns, each student will lock up their type and independently print with our platen presses. Students will each make about 20 cards and are encouraged to make a few extras to trade as well! The class is limited to six students so that everyone has time to run a press independently.

DIY Cards: Letterpress

Join us for this fun, social workshop to see what letterpress printing is all about. During this workshop, you’ll be able to design and print your own greeting cards using vintage type and traditional printing presses. The rich, tactile quality of ink pressed into paper will leave an impression on the lucky recipients of your handmade cards!

Each attendee will be able to choose from a variety of fonts in our collection. With these fonts, they will learn how to set and print their own short saying, phrase, or statement to create a professional and one-of-a-kind set of cards. Our Teaching Artist will share what moveable type is, how it works, why it’s so special, and how its invention changed the world.

This one-day workshop combines an overview of letterpress printing and its unique history with hands on making. It is a great way to try out a new craft and find out if you would love to learn the full process. Our studio will provide each participant with 15 fold-over cards with matching envelops.

Please note: Enrollment is limited to 5 students to ensure social distancing. Students will be expected to disinfect shared resources after use and follow all our Covid-related safety precautions. The class fees cover tuition as well as consumable studio supplies

Announcing the Fall 2016 Class and Workshop Schedule

Once again, we have pulled together a fantastic line up of classes and workshops! This fall, we are offering a few new types of classes that we are extra excited about.

First of all, our new “refresher” classes are a welcoming way for people with previous printing experience to regain confidence in the printshop. Ranging from one day to four weeks, these are fast-paced classes that focus on trouble-shooting, honing skills, trying out more advanced processes and inspiring attendees to take new risks with their artwork.

We are also dedicating a few classes to special topics of particular interest to our alumni. Our fall bookbinding classes delve deep into one binding style, allowing students to experiment with the book form and each develop their own customized designs. Screenprinters can choose to perfect photo printing skills and become a master t-shirt printer.

For those new to print, we have 9 one-day workshops plus a score of beginner printmaking classes and two very cool opportunities to learn illustration or calligraphy!

We truly believe this array of opportunities offers something for everyone. We hope that you will join us soon to make art at Spudnik Press!
