June 19 | Intermediate Letterpress Printing (4 Weeks)
From its creation by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century until the 19th century, letterpress printing was the norm for printing text. Its use persisted in books and various applications until the late 20th century. This class is perfect for students with experience and background in letterpress printing and would like to further their skills and knowledge.
In this four week intermediate course, students will continue building the foundational skills for letterpress printing while exploring printing techniques not covered in our introductory letterpress classes. Demos include hand braying wooden type, printing on alternative substrates, pantone ink matching, and setting multiple font sizes at once. Each student will design and print an independent project, incorporating newly learned skills to create more complex prints while being supported on a technical level. Through weekly demos and independent work time, students will be empowered to troubleshoot and refine their printmaking process.
