DIY Greeting Cards: Calligraphy (Nov 2017)

After taking a calligraphy workshop, you’ll never look at a letter the same again! Designer and calligrapher, Grace Calderone is stopping by Spudnik Press to help first-time calligraphers make their own set of cards for the holidays.

The workshop will take a close look of the composition of letters, and how letters connect to other letters to form words and phrases. Students will get used to assembling the nib and holder, controlling the pen’s reservoir of ink, and varying line width with pressure. After practicing the basics, students will experiment with their own phrase, playing with how composition and ornamental flourishes can spice up the design, create playfulness, or emphasize the spirit of the card.

Everyone should come to class with a set of blank cards ready and a holiday sentiment like “Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas”, “Wishing You Love & Light on Hanakkah”. While students can expect to complete about 5 successful cards, they should bring along a pack of 10-15 to allow for mishaps and experimentation. Students with extra time can move on to customize envelopes with flourishes or a return address.

Everyone will go home with their own cards and a printed guide to help them keep practicing on their own.
