July 29 |Texture in Risography (4 Hours)
Printing with a Risograph means embracing materiality. Because the machine pushes translucent ink through a stenciled master sheet onto uncoated paper, every print inherits an organic, screen-like texture. It’s a medium where color doesn’t just sit on the page—it sinks into it, creating a depth that digital mediums simply cannot replicate.
This 4-hour workshop is an immersive dive into the visual language of Riso textures. We will deconstruct how flat graphics transform into tactile art objects through ink density, overlapping tones, and screen choices. Students will learn how to design for the machine’s eccentricities, turning technical constraints—like drying time and unpredictable registration—into deliberate creative choices. We’ll demystify the hardware by learning how to change master rolls and ink tubes, giving you full creative control over the physical process. Walk away with a deeper understanding of print as a sensory experience, and a custom two-layer print of your own
Some experience with riso suggested, but not required. Students will receive risograph authorization and an Open Studio coupon, redeemable within the following 30 days. The Open Studio coupon is worth 4 hours of studio time (valued at $40) to work independently and continue what you have learned from the class.
